SX OS 2.6 Beta released: full support for Nintendo Switch firmware 7.x

From Team Xecuter:

This new 2.6 BETA of SX OS adds full support for Nintendo Switch firmware 7.x, including ALL functionality you expect when using our product. We've been pioneering our own unique and proprietary solution for defeating any future firmware protection and we're quite happy with the results so far.

This release is marked as BETA because we changed things drastically under the hood to streamline future firmware updates and some things may inadvertently behave differently.

That does not mean it hasn't been vetted at all, so give it a shot today!

Of course, we haven't been sitting idly behind the scenes either. A lot of our development resources and attention has been dedicated to bringing SX OS to those "unhackable" switches. We are working hard to bring the SX OS experience to all of you who are stuck with an "unhackable" switch. Stay tuned for more news!

Maybe we should ask a real lawyer shall we? @SciresM

Because lawyers are incapable of lying when they have a conflict of interest?

I never could find a single shred of evidence that Michael Scires was a laywer either.

You don't need to ask someone biased who may not actually be a lawyer, you can look at cases that have been in court.

Atmosphere should make a web browser in the switch optimized for gbatemp, so the userbase can bash SXOS in every post like they always do, instead of playing on the switch, they seem to enjoy more posting than actually playing.
That describes me perfectly, can't remember last time I turned my Switch ON, it was months ago... :)

I'm waiting for proper games...

Did you tried booting emunand a couple of times? For me it takes up to 5 times to boot since the 2.6 update. Hope they fix it soon.
Did your card formatted to FAT32 or exFAT? What type of emunand you're using - files or partition.
Also, card's speed rating GREATLY matters. Now I have 128GB A3 card, and boot time is quite close to sysnand, however back that days I had 64GB microSD 10class, and it took 50 or so seconds to boot.

sept doesn't need to include the key to violate the DMCA, just having code to calculate it is enough. But if you argue sept is not a DMCA violation then SX OS isn't either.
The DMCA has an exception for the circumvention of copy protection that appears to apply to homebrew. This wouldn't apply when piracy is the goal.
  • Computer programs that enable smartphones and portable all-purpose mobile computing devices to execute lawfully obtained software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications with computer programs on the smartphone or device, or to permit removal of software from the smartphone or device

The DMCA has an exception for the circumvention of copy protection that appears to apply to homebrew. This wouldn't apply when piracy is the goal.

They allowed it specifically for mobile phones and purposefully rejected it for consoles. Even though people claimed that it would be useful for repairing consoles, it was still rejected because of the potential for allowing piracy.

There is an exemption for old consoles where servers are no longer active.

https://www.copyright.gov/1201/2018/faqs.html

But that only helps the people running museums as the servers have to be on site and not externally available, the people providing tools to violate the DMCA would still have issues (like medicinal cannabis doesn't make dealing legal) as you can't say "but someone might use this for a non infringing purpose" the same as a dealer can't say "but one of my customers might need it for medicinal purposes"

I agree it's arbitrary, but that is the problem with specifying exemptions. When they first added an exemption for phones they didn't include tablets, even though they are so similar that the same jailbreak could be used on both.

I'd like to see a ruling on fusee gelee as there is a DMCA violation for vehicle control systems and the same exploit should work on some cars.

The seeds used in key derivation are part of the circumvention, they are numbers and are included in sept. Why don't you think they count?

It isn't that they don't count, it's just that the numbers by themselves aren't considered a copyright circumvention device. Unlike the keys provided with sxos.

To put it more simply, people have faced legal consequences for distributing keys. AFAIK, people have not faced legal consequences for distributing things similar to Atmosphere. It isn't impossible that this could change, but it does make SXOS riskier than Atmo and ReiNX at this point in time.

My set up is sandisk 200gb micro sd card class 10 A1 formated as fat32 32 cluster. Emunand and sysnand are on 7.0.1 and emunand was created via the files on sd for easy access to frequently back it up on my pc. I use the rcmloader to inject the payload and it has always worked like a charm. I never had low boot rate before until the 2.6 update.

ReiNX and Atmosphere both use Sept, they do not include the new key.
Sept is signed with the new key, but is not distributed with it.

Whereas TX have opted into packing the needed key in plain-text into SXOS 2.6.
But to be signed with new key means it has to have the new key.

So sx have it as a file, likely for faster support when next set of keys come out sx can simply update it with new keys.

The dat file tho has to be decrypted which sx havent released tools to extract their dat file.

So theres no difference really just a different approach to include new keys.

You cant unlock unless you have the key simple as, so atmos and reinx have to have its key data somewhere or else it wont know what they are.

What? No, being signed with a key does not mean it contains the key

It isn't that they don't count, it's just that the numbers by themselves aren't considered a copyright circumvention device. Unlike the keys provided with sxos.

The code in atmosphere which uses the seeds actually generates a key equivalent to the one included in sxos, so if one is a circumvention device then so is the other.

The key in sxos wasn't plain text, it was calculated at run time by code (not that this matters as the keys cannot be copyrighted).

To put it more simply, people have faced legal consequences for distributing keys.

Only when they violate the DMCA. The texas instrument calculator OS signing keys can be freely distributed.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Instruments_signing_key_controversy

They tried to have them removed from the internet, but EFF got them to back down.

AFAIK, people have not faced legal consequences for distributing things similar to Atmosphere.

People have not faced legal consequences dealing drugs whilst dressed as a chicken, wearing bananas on their feet and singing the national anthem whist waving a flag. Do you think that is because doing those things makes dealing drugs legal, or just because it's easier to deal drugs if you don't do those things?

Can you show me anything similar to Atmosphere?

A circumvention device isn't a key, a circumvention device is something that circumvents. The law is vague so that "device" can be interpreted as required, in dieselgate the defeat device was made from source code and data. In terms of loading horizon, sxos and atmosphere are either both circumventing or neither are. They most certainly are both devices.

Other parts of SXOS are more easily identifiable as circumvention devices, which aren't included in atmosphere distributions. Like the signature patches to allow use of copyright content without permission. However they are also included in Kosmos/ReiNX and separately in a thread on gbatemp for use with atmosphere.

I don't see why you would treat sxos differently to other circumvention devices.

And if its signed with a key it then has the key.

So your telling me then for example you need a gold key to unlock a gold door and atmos and reinx dont have the gold key to open it.

If its signed with then it contains the key. Youd be able to find what the key is its using to sign.

So it still has to have them or else it cant sign then

So, if ES_PATCHES and FS_PATCHES are allowed... Can I upload an IPS/XDELTA patch for converting the old "allowed" 1.00 boot.dat SXOS to 2.6.1?

No it doesn't work that way. See it as a door that is locked, Atmosphere uses a key to unlock it but takes the key out while opening the door while sxos opens the door with the same key but doesn't take it out and keeps it in the keyhole. It's that simple. How can i know wich key has been used if there is no trace of a key left in the keyhole to begin with while with sxos it is quite clear wich key is used because in reality it is still in there

But the illegal thing is using the key without permission, so it doesn't matter which method you used for unlocking the door. No matter what superstition you carry out at the same time.

You are misunderstanding (partly because the post you responded to wasn't very clear). sept is signed/encrypted with a different key not even TX has. But it contains no keys by itself. It uses Nintendos TSEC fw to get them (TSEC root key and such).

No posting wich method to use and the key itself is illegal. Using a key to open a door without mentioning wich key is used isn't illegal atleast not in Europe at this moment so nope
