Just bought a 2ds with CFW. I want to update it to B9S, then to 11.9 firmware. I think it has sighax with sys 11.6 firmware. It can't go online it tells me to update to be able to do so.

Can I just follow the instructions at 3ds hack guide using the all versions method using ntrboot ???

Thanks

When you already have CFW, you don't need to follow the guide from the beginning on.
Hold (SELECT) while booting to see which version of Luma you have.
When you can boot successfully with Luma v9.1, you can safely update the firmware as normal.

Depending on what is installed you may want to repeat the finalizing setup. Make sure you have the latest Homebrew Menu (boot.3dsx) on your SD

Sighaxed FIRM was not installed!
Check lower screen for info.

Sighaxed FIRM - file not found

Check the guide's instructions again; you're forgetting something.

So, I am a noob and I just followed the guide to run custom firmware on my 2DS xl using an R4i gold plus. Everything works and I backed up my .bin file. I have installed cia files using FBI and they work; also NES and SNES emulators with ROMS. I am just a bit confused and can use some clarifications.

Am I doing this right? I have the SD card in the 2DS xl sd card slot, and the R4i in the game slot with no SD card in it and the switch set to N.

Is this correct or should the sd card be in the R4i?

If not; when would you put a separate card in the R4i? What is the purpose if all my games are on the card inside the 2DS xl? I am assuming that if I were to place an sd card in the R4i its purpose would be to only play / store regular DS games with the switch set to D. Is this correct? I am also assuming that this is the sd card (the one in R4i gold plus) that I would place the wood kernel on, and not the 2DS xl's internal card? Then I can boot the 2DS xl into Wood with the switch placed on D and a sd card inside? This allows me to play DS games directly through the R4i with no emulator?

Can I also store and play 3DS games using the sd card inside of the R4i and wood, or would I have to switch back to N mode and boot into CFW?

Sorry for the idiot post, but I am really trying to figure this all out and the available information is so scattered. Any help would go a long way!

Thanks for the advice!

I ran h2testw before installing B9S. I forgot to delete the files it wrote on the SD card. After deleting the files and re-doing the installation steps, everything went smoothly. My unit is now updated with B9S and the latest firmware.

Thanks, everyone you've been a great help!

After updating the CFW, I notice the NNID of the previous owner is still active in the 2ds. I read that you can remove this by reformatting the system (official way) or by using GodMode9. Which is safer? Will my unit be flagged (and possibly banned) by Nintendo if they see that the NNID was changed without formatting?

I have a Pokemon Moon cartridge that I bought a while back. I want to play it again and saw there's an update for it. I tried updating it but that's when I saw that I need to log in using the NNID of the previous owner. I don't mind doing the Finalizing Setup steps if reformatting the 2ds is the safer way of getting my own NNID.

Thanks!

After installing the custom firmware, the R4i (in mode "N") is not needed anymore. B9S is a bootrom exploit and installed on the console. You should only insert the R4i (switch to "D") for using DS ROMs/DS homebrew. Flashcarts drain the battery even if not in use (while using 3DS software).

Correct. A second micro-SD inside the R4i with Wood is the easiest way to play DS games - but the flashcart will NOT play 3DS games. All CIAs are installed on the console micro-SD.
Once again: mode "N" is only used for hacking. After it's done you will hopefully not need it again on the same console. If the console is bricked because you did something really stupid on purpose (this does not happen without forcing it), ntrboot can be used to repair almost any software damage.

Idiot post? Where? Can't find any. Asking such questions is the purpose of this thread. When getting started with all this, the amount of information can be overwhelming. If you have any further questions, just ask.

  1. Backup all your HOME Menu 3DS and DSiWare titles.
  2. Back up all your 3DS saves + extdata with Checkpoint or JKSM.
  3. Back up all GBA VC saves with GodMode9.
  4. Back up all DSiWare saves manually in GodMode9.
  5. System Settings → Other Settings → Format System Memory
    • You don't keep contents after a reformat.
  6. Reinstall and restore all the games, saves, and extdata with FBI, save manager, GodMode9, etc.
If there isn't a single thing worth keeping to you, just go straight to step 6.

I don't care about the games installed in the 2ds as I have a physical cart. But the problem is I don't have the password of the previous owner.

  1. System Settings → Parental Controls → Forgot Pin → I Forgot
  2. Type in the 10 digit Inquiry Number and M/D date shown on your 3DS.
  3. Enter the Master Key to reset the parental PIN lock.
  4. Format System Memory and then make your new profile setup.
If that doesn't work, a scorch earth approach would be:
  1. GodMode9 → [1:] SYSNAND CTRNAND → press (X) on data folder to delete it.
    • This will erase the entire user's profile setup.
  2. On your next HOME Menu boot, you will be greeted with making a new user profile.
    • Make a dummy one. This is just to get you to HOME Menu.
  3. System Settings → Other Settings → Format System Memory.
  4. Make a real profile this time.

The first method worked! Thanks a lot!

When i read the word "I" in that sentence, i was like yeah, "i" as a gateway user, not you as a person ;)

You got a sense of humor tho, i like it.

Could you tell me what your sysnand/emunand version is, and your Gateway's FW version? Blue card? red?

Anyways, you probably need to update your emunand.
i think there's a tutorial for 11.9 to work with the latest GW 3.7.2. - Beta "ULTRA" FW.
11.2 is GW's last supported official 3ds FW.

Problems like not being able to boot into emunand, like yours, (you havent used it in a while,) means all your software (FW) is out of date.

First,
make sure your gateway is updated with 3.7.2. - beta "ultra" you can find the downloads on their website.
let me know when you have that done.

Then we can work on your emunand.

there seems to be plenty of tools/files on their website as well

Cheers LowEndC!

Trying to survive this world without humor would be a large misstep into the wrong direction. X-)

The new 3ds XL boots directly into Sysnand and it´s on 9.0.0-20E. It´s been like that as long as i remember. I have both the blue and red card and even tried the old trick using the blue card for the red to work. I remember holding R or L while booting into Gateway mode, but no luck at all.

Downloaded 3.7.2. - beta "ultra" and transferred the GW.3dsx and GW.smdh onto the root of the internal sdxc. Is there anything else i should use from that folder?

Allright! My problem is solved. I remembered installing soundhax in 2016, so i could load the homebrew launcher and then reaching gateway mode. Will probably use soundhax until it´s time to dump Gateway totally, which quite often refuses to read the red card. Got to use some special technique inserting the damn card itself.

Thank you LowEndC for trying to help me out. If you believe in internetkarma your help won´t go unrewarded. ;)

Is there currently any free way to get cfw on a 3ds?
Yes, there is. Just follow the guide on a the path that fits your current firmware.

https://3ds.hacks.guide/

Pure software:
  • Most low firmware versions ≤ 11.3→ Soundhax (and some additional exploits) FREE
  • 11.4 ≤ your device ≤ 11.8 → update to 11.9 (for Eshop access)
  • 11.9 → use Frogminer (FREE) Or Fredminer, but with European region Fredminer requires buying a DSiWare game.
Not only software: (works on all firmware versions)
  • ntrboot if you have a compatible flashcart → much faster than Frogminer. requires (buying) ntrboot compatible flashcart
  • hardmod →requires good soldering skills. Mostly obsolete and not recommended.

Yup... it´s time to continue working on that neverending backlog. X-)
Which software do you reccomend for GW 9.0? Don´t know where to look since i´m just a wannabe hacker and everything i learned about hacking is from here. :D

OF Topic
I seem to confuse people here with both my quoting and writing. :D
The thing is i´m from Sweden and can´t change the location in my profile setting. I remember my english teacher in the mid ´90s saying it´s very important to communicate properly with people who has english as native language. So my writing seems very proper (brittish), but in fact as a person i´m not uptight at all. I just believe in asking properly when you´re in need of guidance from people (like you) who are better/smarter at things i´m just a wannabe at. :)

So I've got an Old 3DS with B9S which I'm trying to uninstall in preparation for selling. Following the guide, I've got up to step 17 on section 1 (the part where you try to boot the .firm from the exefs), but upon trying to boot the firm, instead of booting to the home menu it just stays frozen on GodMode9's file explorer screen and is completely unresponsive.

I see the guide states the 3DS could brick if I use the uninstall script under these circumstances, so I figured someone here knows what the problem might be? If it makes any difference, I've just flashed a fresh 9.2 EUR ctrnand image, also through GM9, but everything boots and runs perfectly fine when powering on so I don't really get it.
