Google GDC 2019 gaming event coverage - Google Stadia unveiled

Google is hosting a special gaming announcement set to take place at this year's GDC 2019. It's finally time to see what the company has up its sleeves, and what they have planned for the future in regards to gaming. The stream is now live, and you can watch the above video, or check back here to read GBAtemp's live updates.

Google wishes to build a game platform for everyone, bringing together all forms of gamers. This has been named the Stadia.

The Google Stadia will run on as many platforms as possible, from the Chromecast, to Android, to PCs, where games will be streamed using Google's low latency technology.

When watching games on YouTube, you'll be able to click a single "play now" button to instantly try any supported game in your browser, without downloading, without updating, or without any interruptions.

The goal is to lower the barrier to entry, so that gaming is more accessible.

Google will also be making their own controller which will connect through wifi to the host game session in order to reduce input lag. There will be a share button and a Google Assistant feature.

Right now, Stadia supports 1080/60, but at launch, it will support 4K, and even 8K.

Unreal, Havok, and Unity engines will support the hardware, which will run off Linux. Each game will run off of Google's data centers.

ID Software has gotten their upcoming DOOM Eternal working on the Google Stadia, and will be bringing it to the platform.

Google will also have its own first party development studio, Stadia Entertainment, which will create games for the platform.

Also, during the stream, they showed off the ability to join in on an NBA stream. Here is the chat, it's pretty funny to read. This is exactly how people sound in a stream chat for games!

Also, lol, both teams couldn't score more than 24 points in 4 quarters!

i live in a small town with only 5000 citizens, but we are able to get 100mb/s speed internet service, internet will reach every corners, so it won't be a huge problem.
This service will even available for some obsolet HW, unlike pc or console players both M$ and $ony have you to upgrade hw to play games, ps4->PRO, X1->X1 scarlet, and on pc is even worse cauz lastgen CPU and GPU costs 5-800 euro each, and you guys never complained about upgrades but complain for internet service??

this doesn't make any sense, IF YOU GUYS CAN ACCEPT NETFLIX which work at same way as console:
you buy VHS/DVD/bluray which costs 10-15€ each, now you pay a small fee to subscribe to video streaming service.

Both NETFLIX and Stadia work at same way, You can accept Netflix? then you can embrace Stadia too!

@migles there won't be any monopoly since both X2 and ps5 are already in development, most AAA games will be released on them and pc, and you are STILL free to make choice on which platform you want to play games.

Game streaming it the Futere(R), both M$ and $ony are already offering similar premium sub service AKA PS NOW and M$ game pass.
the difference is in 5 years if you want to play that game you just fire up the console and that is it you play it, if the game is on streaming service it wont be there forever, since license expire and such, countless games get pulled of xbox and psn store becuase license expired, studio closed down and etc, so if you have it downloaded or physically you can play it forever and streaming will just not work at all you cant play it anymore

also netflix is for watching only so even if the video has some ms delay or needs afew seconds to buffer you are fine, with games you cant have even a tiny bit of delay or games become unplayable.

streaming games is not the future it will just die and become a forgotten experiment, heck sony ps now its a huge failure, people dont want to stream rent their games they want to own them thats why it failed.

this is basically like VR,3d and such, people said its revolutionary and it will change the industry and yet its basically just crappy tech demos and sometimes one decent game here and there but it will never but that much mainstream really.

If this really takes off it will be the death of physical media & gaming will turn to a subscription service like netflix. It'll become to expensive. I want to own my physical media not rent it.
It won't become too expensive at all? A single brand new game today costs $60 USD+Tax. For a subscription fee that I doubt will be much higher than $60 USD, if higher at all, you will be getting access to all available games if I understand correctly.

The more I look into it, the less I hate it. I'm personally not a fan myself but it is great for its use cases. This is definitely for the more casual gamers and people who mainly stick to watching games on YouTube. This is perfect for them. No need to buy console or games, works on any weak device you have lying around, will support several inputs, save states and sharing saves, the Google Assistant thing was damn cool showing off how easy asking for help in singleplayer games would be, Google's really high end resources, one fee to play all available game, no downtime with downloading updates and such, very, very convenient for parties, etc. Quite good for multiplayer games as well for the fact there won't be any cheating. It has use cases and will be great for getting people into proper (non-mobile) gaming for cheaper. I assume after this, they will definitely push their Google Fiber to a wider scale as well. I'm interested to see where this will go. I think this is a great thing AS LONG AS it doesn't mess with traditional methods that I prefer. It obviously won't have every game you'll ever want to play, and that's fine, I don't think it is meant for people of this site that are more serious about gaming. However, it will support several games off the bat and will surely have enough (good) games to keep casual gamers occupied. I think it's pretty safe to say it will at very least have the popular games these people are watching other's play on YouTube, so they can play as well. Not only this but I think it's totally great that a tech giant like Google is getting in on gaming and adding to the industry. Hardware and performance is no longer an issue and games will be looking much nicer than you're probably used to now, provided you have the connection for it. Heck, further appealing to their audience that loves to watch these games, they showed off the really neat feature where you can join in on a creator's game, a lobby system sort of thing and then instantly dropped in. They've even got their own studio. Not a fan of exclusives being locked to streaming, but eh, I've got so many other games I still need to play, extra props to them if they can get a good, tempting exclusive. Finally, I think it's also really great that they're pushing mobile support as well. Maybe the people so used to playing mobile games will switch over as well, it's very interesting.

The only downside, is the need for a solid internet connection. I understand not everybody has this and that is the biggest problem here but high speed internet is only going to become more and more accessible. May have been good to wait it out a tad longer.

I wouldn't say something like "heck [even] sony ps now" if I were you - that's years old tech, this will be a massive improvement, as will the next attempts from Sony themselves...

Still too early in my opinion - excellent for Japan and South Korea but the rest of the world hasn't got the internet for this yet!
But 10.7TF power is a big jump even over the Xbox One X... couple that with the promise of the games loading in a maximum of 5 seconds: after this generations often >1 minute initial loading times, I'm already interested. Hopefully I won't have died of old age by the time it becomes all it promises!

"chromecast"

that's a good one, the performance on that thing is worse than god-awful. Even just streaming from my phone to the tv has nearly a second of delay. I can guarantee you all that we will never see a good and proper game streaming service for anything other than slow RPGs within the next 30 years.

I played probably first? Cloud gaming platform on Android when i had shitty cable tv internet, but now it is part of Sony brand... it was not bad experience... but i really like owning games not as digital ones. Why it could be good, because as they said they have this damn YouTube... and it could bring casual players over this. But there one problem when teacher told little Jimmy turn off phone/tablet :D

Don't think they talked about it but if they are letting you embed entire states in links, then it should be very possible for them to support instant suspend and resume at any point. Even when you switch between games.

I mean just being able to skip all the startup logos would be worth it alone.

It could be good idea with suspending game... I said only that cloud game experience wasn’t that bad, i played it when there was no ps4 and Xbox one. This platform handle lot of PS3/XBOX360 games. It had one thing good that anyone could play 15 trial for free on any game and owning game for 5-7 bucks wasnt bad

Im only interested in the cross platform/cross progression part of this service. I'm fine with cloud gaming as a compliment to having local copies of games. For instance, I would not mind starting a game on my PC with a local copy and then continuing that game in the cloud until I return back home. 100 percent cloud, HELL No. Give me 25-50 percent cloud, I can deal with that.

I am not buying into something I cannot own. I will never buy a game I cant own. And this generation and its dlc is why I am leaving gaming until they get it together.
