Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent announced for mobile

Last year's Nintendo Switch exclusive JRPG Octopath Traveler released to rave reviews and critical acclaim. Square Enix appears to be following up its successful game with a prequel, titled Octopath Traveler: Tairiku ni Hasha, or, Champions of the Continent. A short gameplay trailer gives us a look at the game, which appears to be fairly similar to the original, with a few changes made to reflect the somewhat surprising platform shift. Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent will be released for iOS and Android, and will be a single player mobile game that tells a story that takes place before Octopath Traveler. Japanese publication Famitsu interviewed Square Enix about the game's reveal, who stated that Champions of the Continent will be a free-to-play title, and will not have any multiplayer elements. though new story content will slowly be added post-launch. A release window of 2019 was given for Japan, with no current confirmation of a western release.

Two words. GRRR EEEDD. after Royal Cash err I mean Clash Royale everyone wants to make a mobile game.
I'm not so sure that that's the case. Remember that Square's primary target market for their JRPG's is Japan, and mobile gaming is huge there. I think they're trying to broaden their market share with a franchise that proved to be a big hit, it's sensible, but not beneficial to players abroad. An additional Switch version would put me at ease, I loved Octopath, it's one of the few Switch exclusives that I really enjoyed.

It's a damn shame the prequel will be released on mobile devices instead of Switch. Hard pass for me, as no Nintendo mobile games have ever grasped me.

It's a turn-based RPG, I suspect gameplay won't be impacted at all by the platform switch, no pun intended.

No, but the virtual buttons will probably take up 90% of the screen as most mobile games do. Either that or have a lousy aspect ratio that forces the game to be vertical

I would hope they bring this out for switch a little later, (timed phone exclusive ) rather than phone exclusive period.

as for what we currently know I'll reserve judgment if it has controller support and no ads or microtransactions I may buy it for my iPad.

otherwise, if it's littered with conventional mobile game cancer (ads, microtransactions, timers )
I will be "hitting the high sea's" ;) ;) and thanks to the new iOS jailbreak blocking ads and negating any need for microtransactions but i'm hoping i don't need to bother.

since its iOS im surprised at no AppleTV version as well, it would be trivial to make run considering

Maybe they will bring it as DLC or a new game on Switch, but right now, I'm cynical regarding mobile versions of SE, Nintendo, etc games, that's just my MO.

This is so damn disappointing, I loved the game and they decide to go mobile. Hope it fails but it probably will do great with all the pay to win garbage they put in.

Looks like I'm not alone at least, they disabled comments and the dislike bar :rofl2:

I play Final Fantasy Brave Exvius which is a mobile gatcha game. Very addictive, but also not very good. The sad thing is that the story, graphics, and especially music of FFBE are top notch and it could have made a great actual FF game if it wasn't a mess of microtransactions and gambling mechanics. The story characters and items are basically worthless compared to the ones you have to pay in-game currency or money for a 1/600 chance to get, but the game is balanced around the paid characters. In a way they are saturating their own market, because FFBE is so time consuming to stay F2P, I wouldn't even try any of their other games.

I'm sure this new mobile Octopath game will pull in more money from the whales than the Switch game ever did, and the executives will kill the series on consoles as a result, just like they did with 2D Final Fantasy. Square hasn't made a good game in-house in many years (except KH3, maybe), and they basically exist as a mobile game company that uses their existing IPs to exploit "whales" who have a gambling problem. It's sad.

Deltarune is partly a thank you to the folks who bought Undertale and also a demo for episode 2, which will not be free.
Sadly with tye nature of wanting to make these games last a long time to act as a service they add a fuck ton of filler....I'm looking at you khux, worse with filler then your actual games.

So first decent game Square manages in years that does ok they immediately port the sequel to the phone so they can charge fans a fortune with crappy in game purchases. I'm glad I stopped buying there games my last Final Fantasy was 10, I have however just started Octopath Traveler and it has been a treat, a real throwback to classic JRPG's I'm not happy with this announcement.

mmm but why prequel though? its one thing to do something like this, but it alienates a part of your install base to make the game a core part of the story relegated only to mobile devices.

I'm probably not going to play it, but I hope, that this game won't be locked to 30fps, now that they can utilize more powerful hardware.

Maybe is more powerful, but smartphones don't share support for low-level API unlike Switch. So even if they put 60 FPS for phones, then it will look worse than in Switch.
