The next installment in the Trine video game series, Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince, is scheduled for a release sometime this autumn and it's coming back with a 2.5D puzzle-platforming gameplay that defined the first two titles! The game is being developed by Frozenbyte and will be published by Modus Games and in a press release today they revealed some details of the all-new story that reunites Amadeus, Pontius, and Zoya.

After years apart, the Astral Academy has requested help from the three heroes to find Prince Selius, whose intensely dark nightmares have begun to slip into reality and wreak havoc on the waking world. Encounter more epic boss fights than ever before, solve fascinating puzzles, unlock new skills, explore lush, vibrant landscapes, and experience a hauntingly beautiful new soundtrack by the composer of Trine 1-3. Additionally, and for the first time ever, Trine adds four-player co-op to its feature list.

Some key features of the game were also revealed like:
  • Local and online multiplayer: Play with up to 4 players online or in local co-op.
  • Dynamic puzzle-solving: Solve puzzles - solo or with friends - that feature fire, air, light, magnets, electricity and more, with challenges tailored to the number of players.
  • Abundant skill trees: Unlock diverse abilities and amazing new skills.
  • Completely revamped combat system: Experience the heroes' own bloodcurdling nightmares in boss fights featuring an enriched combat system with fresh challenges and thrilling action.
Alongside the news of the next title, Modus will also release Trine: Ultimate Collection which comes packed with bonus content at retail and will include Trine: Enchanted Edition, Trine 2: Complete Story, Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power, and Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince and will be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC both physically and digitally.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince is coming to PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Steam and PC this autumn.

The art style seems a bit brighter, which I like. The first was a bit too dark and the third was very grey-ish...

I've been playing the series with my best IRL friend since the first game(enchanted edition).
Coincidentally, the 3rd player was always a different friend of us, so we've been playing with 3 different friends so far.
We're planning to keep that tradition for Trine 4 :D

I'm amazed that this series gets a fourth entry. Don't get me wrong they aren't bad games, but not really something special. The level design is okay at best. I guess that this series is such popular is mainly due to the fact that coop games on non-Nintendo platforms are really rare.

Trine 1 was fantastic. 2 was a worthy sequel if I remember correctly.
Trine 3 was a god awful mess though.

4 looks like it's back where it should be, but obviously I won't hold my breath until I see raw footage.

I'm in the same situation, Trine 1 and 2 were amazing for short experience video games where you can screw around with friends in a not too difficult puzzle platformer that even people without experience can pick up and enjoy. Then 3 came along and completely thrashed the dynamics of the game. Whether that be to it being their first time doing a 3d environment or whatever, it was a complete paradigm shift in play and no longer had that charm.

This is a solid wait and see the reviews from me.
