A few days ago, I got a email from Sony telling me that they will start charging me tax when I make a purchase on playstation store. Before then (which was like a whole decade ago when the store was first made in 2008) this never was a thing. I was just curious why now is this a thing? Why wasn't this like so when it was first established? It just makes me confused and shocked. :wtf:

Presumably there's been some legislation passed wherever you're based that now requires tax on the sale of digital goods.

I m glad that I didn't buy from PSN. I don't like digital games at all. A physical version is better. I know that some games are digital only but I can live without it anyway. Or a jailbreak. :)

I think its also depends on its subscription card, on the other hands PlayStation store provides some amount of discount the on the digital contents.

awww man, you don't/didn't pay tax on PSN?
lol dang I been paying Microsoft/Nintendo 13% tax since the Xbox 360 =[
Clearly I've been playing on the wrong consoles.

I'm curious how Sony got around it? Guess the same way Steam does.

Isn't that already included in the price in the EU?

I thought most of the world uses national sales tax rates.
Including tax in prices is easy when the entire country pays the same.

It's utterly impractical in the USA. Not only does each state set different taxes, any number of local governments may add a bit here or there.

No, we just have the 21 percent in Belgium they ask wich made our games a bit more expensive but not by a big margin (give or take 3 euro's) but with the recent changes and taxes that are lifted in the states, prices are exactly the same and with the added fun tax even more expensive.

Yeah that's why tax is not included in the price you see. It's actually kinda weird if you think about it. The states is one country but the European union is a union between countries but those countries work better together then states do with eachother. Like we all have tax included, laws don't intertwine, same regulation and so forth while still having power as a singular country while crossing states sounds more like a bother than it would here crossing countries. It isn't meant to badmouth the US, just saying that beforehand because it might seem so but i just find that weird that is a lot harder for multiple states to work together then countries in the union. I mean if we can all include tax in our prices than so should you so i really don't get why they don't

While this thread is from November, it's been revived so I don't feel bad for commenting.

Sony calculates taxes based on your location. I believe that in Oregon you don't have to pay taxes for digital purchases, while in other states you do.

Your profile shows that you live in New York. Last I checked they didn't require taxes on digital purchases either, but that might have changed recently.
