Thanks for the interest everybody, and sorry it's taking so long, but we're mainly a couple guys working regularly on this--while also managing a weekly blog.

On happier news, we're close to finishing the story proofreading, and we're trying to get some internal playtesting going, to cover all the many routes and stuff while squashing all the bugs we can.

The main bug that has us stumped right now, however, is a certain character limit. Most notably, when you finish an enemy, you can get a message saying "In the broken X armor, you found Y!" However, this seems to cap at 31 chars, which is really not optimal considering some of the item's names are rather on the long side:

View attachment 157131

There's always the possibility of erasing the first part and just go with the "Found Y", but we'd be losing information. I'm not sure if someone here has faced these kind of hardcoded limits...?
You could change it to something like "Found Y in X" or "X had Y" how much information would be lost by just saying "Found Y" and would it be important information?

From a quick google search I managed to find a forum on the pokemon community site wherein someone had the same issue with a character limit (showthread.php?t=303675). I'm not sure how useful it would be since it's a different game for a different system but hopefully it helps in some way shape or form.

I wish I knew more about this sort of thing

Unfortunately no, that Pokemon thing doesn't apply here, we can't read the code that way, it'd be easy if we could.

It's not really important information, but since the game seems to have fixed drops, it's nice to see how you got each item, in case you need to replay the stage or something. I guess "Found in X Y" could work for now, we're trying to weight our options for that while we work on the important stuff.

But yeah, seems like character limits might be a constant pain in the neck throughout this project. I've already raised the possibility of naming items the "old skool" way since the item list seems to fit around 13 or 14 chars, and there are things like "Craftsman Repair Tool", "Technique Secret Incense" or "Fist Sacred Incense" that just won't cut it (my partner's not a fan of the idea though).

This is still being continued? If so, can't wait to get my hands on this once you guys are finished :D it's nice to see the PSP still gets love after many years later with so many new comers to the scene and new homebrew projects being worked on! This is one of the reasons why i love the PSP!

Could you upload it to google drive or something? O:
maybe tomorrow after i finish redoing the patch, didn't saw that there's a newer build.py.

Also, i wonder if Free Talk was translated? The patch didn't translate it.

If someone can explain lines 131 - 133 of script inserter, what are 3,4,5,6,7,8?
i'm kinda lazy analyzing the prog script.

edit: i think i know now, those are script filenum. So next question, should i add all?

posting an iso file is forbidden here, and i don't know how to PM, can't seem to find it.

...
what i use is column D which has a very rough translation, but it's complete.
Column E is still rough but a little better than D, it's incomplete though.
Column F is better translation, but just like E it's still incomplete.

there's still a lot to edit in this translation, text overlap in the dialogue box.
item names doesn't fit in the box, and much more. The team has a lot more to do here.

Thanks! Yeah, but still, it's pretty playable atm. I also think item names, and terms like hiragana, katakana in the character name screens should be abbreviated (HIRA, KATA). The purpose of each item is explained in the shop anyways, and most of the people who¿s gonna play the game is already familiar with the terms.

A good deal of quality work has been done by the team already and I hope to see it completed one day.

Can I ask what is the status of the project? And is there a working english translation of the game not just the menus now?

We managed to nab a new playtester (and quite fast at that :3), we finished the story and are halfway through revising the freetalks, so not a lot of script left... though after that there's items and stuff, alas.

And yes, it's a translation of the whole thing. On that note though, we never got around to asking how we could translate the graphics (japanese menu options and such) and how we could put translated videos inside the game (we've done some investigation on our own on how to extract the PSMF vids, but putting them back escapes our grasp for the moment; I could elaborate on what we've found so far if that helps).

my question is, where are those graphic files, tried looking at graphics.bin it has 97 files but seems just a bunch of wierd files.
I didn't tried looking at battle.bin, because it's a LICE file, and seems complicated it'll take a lot of time for me to make an extractor.
...
in ppsspp though, there's a dump & replace texture.

Graphics and Videos are the most difficult. Translating them aside, replacing and putting them in the game is one heck of a hurdle on par with hacking the thing and make it playable. I did tamper a bit and saw how tough the process is. I and my friends played it despite being untranslated and enjoyed it. We await the completion of the project.

right, too difficult, specially a 19yr old program crashes on my pc, i can't convert mp4 back to pmf.
...
@leecherboy
regarding the pmf files i think it's better if you post the steps of what you've done so far.
I've look into the file a bit, can't find the file sizes and addresses in the eboot though, expanded size might give us problem.
..
edit:
scratch the last
i found the pointers/filesize of the pmf files in the EBOOT, located at 0x1628b0.
I haven't tried putting an editted pmf file yet though.

Oh okay, let me post what I figured out:
The cutscenes are, clearly enough, inside "movie.bin", but we can't decompress them the way we got the other files. Luckily enough, there's a couple programs that can extract them, like MultiExtractor:
multiextractor.jpg
Or Nova Extractor, which kinda shows the same results:
nova_extractor.jpg
MultiExtractor has a paid version that lets you patch in a movie (I guess basically replacing one file with whatever you tell it to?), and it kind of works indeed, since I managed to duplicate cutscene 2 into 1 as well, so that whichever you played in-game, you'd get cutscene 2 anyways (I should probably have taken a nifty vid here, but eh, it's easy enough to do again). Also, this patching only works if the file is equal or lower in MB size.
However, that's basically as far as my successes went. I tried to add some sample .ASS sub to the first vid and save it again as MPG (also tried converting it to MP4, subbing it the way I usually do, then converting it back to MPG), but patching it either failed to play anything, or the movie played past the halfmark without subs (maybe because it didn't understand my patched vid and it skipped to the remaining part of the original vid?)
So then I looked at the "movie.bin" with wxMEdit to see if I could at least identify what kind of encrypting it was using, and sure enough, it's a "PSMF" thing:
psmf_bits.jpg
Buuuut yeah, that was opening a whole can of worms. Apparently PMF is a format the PSP famously uses to play vids, with sound encoded with an Atrac3 whatever (which explains why my conversions never had sound), but tools to extract/convert/play them have outdated links by now. Some people say that the MPGs we got are the same as PMFs so only a renaming is needed (https://www.animemusicvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=82457)
And there are some people who apparently have subbed ingame vids (so some hope there): https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=24307.0, but their process of splitting video and audio doesn't seem to work with our MPGs, renaming or not...

From my search around with google, you need to convert videos to avi then to mps made by umdcomposer, then mpstopmf.
I have found the mpstopmf prog here
http://forums.qj.net/psp-homebrew-hacks-discussion/62219-mps-pmf-converter-tool.html
The bad news, the prog uses PSMF0012 as header, while QB is using PSMF0015. Have not tried it yet, if it can still read it.
...
As for umdcomposer that creates mps, i don't know if the legality of that old app still works around this age, it's 19yrs already, all i could say is it's in wololo.
...
regarding the sound, the pmf files really has no sounds because it's separated to sndstrm.bin
...
Ah forgot to add my script to extract pmf files in movies.bin, though i know you already extracted it, anyways i'll upload it here just in case.

Oh, that looks pretty good!

I did have some trouble following the instructions however. Not sure how your extract program works (is "ULJS00190.bin" supposed to be the original ISO?), and when I tried the UMDcomposer (after renaming the exe so it could work on my PC), it says that my subbed AVI is an invalid file, due to different size or frame rate. Do I need to do the previous conversions with a specific configuration?
