The first wave of online finals for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate North America Open 2019 tournament is happening this weekend in four regions across North America and you can watch the event live!

In a press release today, Nintendo announced that the livestream will start approximately between 9 a.m. PT and 12 p.m. PT on Saturday, Feb. 9, for all regions, on their Twitch and YouTube channels. Or right below:

The tournament will have 16 players compete in the first online final event this Saturday. Fans of the Super Smash Bros. fighting scene might recognize such players as Narcissa, who was a runner-up at the Nintendo World Championships in 2015, competing in this weekend’s finals. Professional Super Smash Bros. player ESAM will also be a special guest on the livestream, joining VikkiKitty, Toph and Jordan Kent – commentators well known in the Super Smash Bros. community.

Afterwards, the winners of the Online Event 1 final will join the winners of the second and third online event finals on March 2 and March 16 to compete in the final event at the PAX East video game conference in Boston on March 30.

Another tournament happening this weekend is the online qualifiers for the Splatoon 2 North America Inkling Open 2019. Happening on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 9 a.m. PT, teams of four will also compete and out of more than 400 registered teams, only eight teams will advance to the online qualifier finals on March 2. From there, the top four teams will compete at PAX East in Boston.

More information on both events are available on Nintendo's official events page linked below.

There's already tournaments with hardcore competitive rule sets, I welcome the diversity. It will be something different to watch. There's plenty of room in this world for multiple tournament types/rule sets.
but several of those are extremely bad ideas that lead to very boring gameplay, timed battles mean that camping is rewarded as once you get a lead, killing time by camping and running away is a really, really strong strategy. I wouldn't be surprised if most people win just from, one or two kills. Any stages is also a bad idea, even with no hazards, as again, camping is heavily rewarded, (ie get a kill on hyrule temple, then head down to the caves of life and win because it's really, really easy to take over 300% and still not die with all the walls there). And walk offs are so easily abusable and can lead to kills off of a single grab (or even a single jab if you space well enough) at 0%, that's not fun to play or watch, even playing casually with friends with only OP items turned on at high spawn rate I try to not use stages with walk offs.

Piranha Plant better be banned.
Why? Variety is good.
items on? what blasphemy is this?
Please. Go back to Melee.

This guy has the right idea. The point of these official competitions isn't so that hardcore players can flaunt their e-peen. It's not supposed to be serious, it's supposed to be fun, and it's supposed to lure new players into the series. Serious players mostly don't care about any other Smash than Melee anyways.
Smash has always been about having fun foremost, it's never been meant to be a serious fighting game for hardcore gamers. I think some people have forgotten how to have fun and are just playing for the sake of being the very best.

Why? He gets reamed by any character with a decent amount of range in their kit. I main Samus so that makes the plant super easy. Young Link is another one that rocks his socks.

I would put Plant in the noobstomper category along with K Rool and Dedede, though. It's just a matter of adjusting your play in subtle ways against these characters.

I wouldnt say it's in the tier with King K Rool and big D but it's not THAT overpowered. It's a very strong char if played right but I personally still give the crown to Pichu ^^
That boi is just insane.

Jokes on you. I started playing Smash with 3ds :P
And no matter how you turn this, playing with items competitively is stupid. Its not a matter of skill, its a complete RNG. If item spawns near you, you get completely OP and can uninstall the opponent. I honestly dont understand who thought this was a smart move.

Serious players do care about the newest Smash thank you very much; And it's not even about serious play, it's not fun to spectate or be involved in a match that has one player chasing the person with 1 kill for 6 more minutes because of an obvious skill gap. The general tournament rules (not these rules) that have been in place the last several years are there for a reason, it's to make it an enjoyable competitive experience for players and spectators alike. I'll stick to going to my local tournament place where I can actually have fun without item spam, unbalanced stages, and no time limit. It's going to be a joke in PAX East.

If it's a tier list based on potential and ease of use, I'd probably put all three in different tiers. Just saying that they share the noobstomper quality in that they're hard to deal with if you haven't played against them a fair amount. Then at some point everything suddenly clicks and it just becomes a lot easier to beat them.

As a well-known tip I recommend everyone set C-stick to tilt attacks and L/ZL to jump. Makes short-hop attacks, tilt attacks, and air attacks so much easier to execute, and it'll make a big improvement in your play after getting used to it.

Everything you said is correct and proves why allowing more stages and allowing items is a good thing. Having 4 or 5 stages that are all the same and with items completely banned is exactly what causes one person to chase around everyone else.

What's the problem with items being RNG? It's not about the items, it's about how you use them. You can't just pick up an item and automatically win. Some items give you a big advantage, and I'm not saying those shouldn't be banned, some of them are just broken. But banning items as a whole is just taking all the fun out of Smash IMO.

If you're being competitive about the game and money is involved, then leaving items in is just allowing RNG interfere with these things.
Then again I'm mainly a Melee player so what do I know :P

We're talking about competitive play here. On the high end, these are players that can combo you from 0% to KO. Items just become an annoyance at that point and get in the way of true skill shining through. Any RNG is always going to be detrimental to the competitive aspects of a game. On the casual side it's just fine.

Wait, that's why I use time instead of stock. Having time means if you camp, you don't get anything and you have to get involved in the action to start getting KO's. Being on stock means you can camp at the side, wait for every one else to battle among themselves until there's only one person and then go after them. If you're bad at the game, it won't matter since they probably have 1 stock left after battling and you have all stock, so you'll eventually defeat them before they have a chance to defeat you.

I hate the idea that competitive play means banning fun. It shouldn't be that way and it's why I've grown to resent the Melee community.
And before you tell me, "that's not true", have you seen how many Melee stages are banned from competitive play? Can you explain why every single one is banned? Anything that's not a flat stage or a flat stage with a couple platforms in the air is automatically banned.
