There are many reasons the Switch is such a success but I think this one doesn't get talked about enough: before the Switch, Nintendo was asking you to buy both a home console AND a portable console, and that's just too much money for a lot of people to justify. This situation also created some stress because some of the games you wanted were on Nintendo's portable, and some were on the home console, but many people could only pick 1. Now though, the Switch is basically a must-buy, it's almost a steal really. You're getting Nintendo's home console AND portable console for the price of just the home console. Who could pass that up? This isn't just about Nintendo, this is a new era of gaming. I think we will see Sony eventually put out their own Switch, because technology is allowing this to happen. Imagine all those PS4 exclusives on the go? And you know Sony would put in a proper OLED display too, it would be fantastic
It all depends on where they see the market going. Nintendo had a data on their hand held market going all the way back to gameboy, so to them it makes sense. Idk why but I can't see sony or microsoft going this route.
IIRC it was legit in their commercial, where the actor either went from handheld to home or vice versa. They knew what they were doing. I guess we all missed it, and OP didn't. Jokes jokes.

To be honest.. That's not true. Nintendo stated it was a third pillar to live alongside the Wii U and 3DS... Well, that's wrong..

Nintendo is untouchable in the handheld market so not really surprising switch was a success. It was also a smart idea that nintendo didn't went after the same market sony/ms are both fighting for dominance and just being its own.
