I found it for 40 bucks at a pawn shop. it works and everything... i only needed it to play my DSTWO games on a bigger screen as I use my regular n3ds with gateway to play 3ds games... so my intention wasnt CFW, but id still like to know if it has any possibilities

new or old 3ds?
On 11.3 or less you can install straight with homebrew, not needing to worry about the other stuff.

On 6.x and 4.x you have the option of doing it completely offline with a DS flashcart, and on 2.x or less you can install it with a copy of Cubic Ninja.

you can either downgrade to 11.3 and go that route without having to use seedminer,
or you can upgrade to 11.9 and use the seedminer + frogminer method.

i was a complete noob to 3ds cfw but not computers.
took me 30 mins with the 11.9 seedminer way. which is the same as the 11.8 way because nothing changed in that regard.

Gateway is old and not recommended by most people on this site. Cfw is much better and has way more features and if you update the 2ds to latest firmware can be done totally free of charge.

again, if you have the new 2ds xl, you cant downgrade. 11.9 is your only way to install CFW without hardmodding or a ntr capable flashcart

Yep exactly to downgrade he would have to upgrade to 11.9 then install cfw then downgrade. What would be the point when you already have the far superior cfw.

he probably isnt into the cfw scene as much as others, and when he was, gateway was probably a thing.

:lol exactly... its still what i use on my o3ds xl and n3ds

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

ill do this.. i watched a video explaining how the first part is done... if its just to get the homebrew launcher, i was going to skip that since i have a DSTWO (see how far back i go lol)... but if i have to do both parts, ill probably do it

Luma3ds is the best and more widely used CFW nowadays

i know nothing of dstwo, have someone else confirm.
ive had nintendo ds and 3ds, multiple console, over the years
but just got into cfw on 3ds a week or 2 ago.

I along with most others on the site would heavily recommend you DON'T watch video guides for installing cfw. Why

1. They are very offen out of date. Which can lead to mistakes or vital things being missed. Online guides on the other hand are updated as soon as new methods come out.

2. There are a number of videos online that say they will help you install cfw but they are purposely designed to brick your system without you knowing.

Plus there are a shit load more reasons not to use them.

ill take that advice to heart.. ill follow the online guides above

partially true.
https://www.jacksorrell.tv/nintendo-3ds.html
his videos are on youtube and videos are up to date and easy to follow.

he has a video on how to install homebrew via steelminer method.
also on a cfw install for 11.8, which is the same as 11.9.

thats how i got my homebrew launcher installed,
then i went to the jisagi.frogminer site for the rest.

and i know that im kind of stepping on cat's toes right now by mentioning those videos, but i just used the hombrew launcher video a week or so ago and they are accurate.

BUT
it is recomended to use one website only or, one guide and not use multiple guides for different steps.
Have a question as don't have time today to watch the video.

Does the video just tell you what to do? Or does it tell you what to do why you are doing it and what not to do?

Most videos only tell you what to do and that is why we see so many people here with problems as they have went and done something they shouldn't simply because the video never explained what not to do.

ok i did skim through it,
i believe youre right.
it didnt say to turn off spotpass settings or turning off "show your friends what youre playing"
among other things.
i suppose youre right.

i used the https://3ds.hacks.guide for everything but the japanese flipnote studio directions,
for that i used
https://zoogie.github.io/web/flipnote_directions/

the flipnote studio directions on 3ds.hacks confused me and wouldnt launch b9stool.

Edit:
use one guide!!!

Either the https://3ds.hacks.guide
plus the https://zoogie.github.io/web/flipnote_directions/ for the flipnote directions,
as the 3ds.hacks.guide flipnote directions are confusing.

or

http://steelminer.jisagi.net/
followed by
https://jisagi.github.io/FrogminerGuide/

(the zoogie flipnote directions come from the jisagi guide.)
