First concept images for Mad Box console's controller revealed

slightly mad.PNG

After revealing the design that they are going with for their Mad Box console, Slightly Mad Studios's CEO Ian Bell took to Twitter again to unveil the first early concept designs for their console.

The controller appears to blend elements of controllers from current gen consoles, bearing an Xbox layout and a touchscreen, rather than a touch pad à la PS4 controller. It also has rear paddles somewhat akin to the Xbox One Elite and SCUF controllers. However, note that these are merely concept images and the final product might very well look totally different, and the company might even release some more possible designs in the future as it did with the console itself.

I like the idea (stolen from Sega's VMU and taken to the extreme's that current tech allows for) of the display within the controller, and butons being lit to denote available in game actions... not sure how usable it would be (especially in a well lit environment) after it's cost-cut to make it affordable.

So... EDGY!!!!

But really, this thing looks like it hurts to hold in your hand. Not to mention all those lights on the damn thing. You’re more liable to go blind looking at the controller than the actual TV screen

It's like a better Wii U Gamepad
Tbh it's like an even dumber wiiu gamepad. Likely will see no attention from developers, and the company has no first party development team to release gimmicky games that utilize it.

Good, I've always wanted to be able to use my controllers shoulder buttons to stab the other guy with if I lose!
Not commit honorable sudoku? For shame. ;)

I like the fact it looks like a table when it's propped up on the handles and triggers, because in order for that on-screen keyboard to be big enough to be functional, the controller would have to be the size of a table.

It's too ambitious and the controller just to drum up interest in the system.
If the controller does come out as depicted, it'll probably be $150.00, but I have a feeling they'll make a $600.00 bundle with two cons and the system.

When you think it can't get any worse.
Who is supposed to hold this in his hands?
Also I've had enough after seeing the D-Pad.

This looks uncomfortable and expensive. The dpad looks horrible in particular.
These are just renders, next week it will be something different again.

I like the design, and it's a neat idea, but I have a couple of concerns:
1. Those edges look sharp. I hope they have thought of this and made sure to smooth out any edges where your hands naturally rest. As long as they do that, the edges everywhere else can be sharp and it won't affect anything.

2. That screen is a nice idea but one thing comes to mind and that is cost. These things might up being as expensive as the Wii U gamepad and you need at least a couple of them if you want to enjoy multiplayer games. The second screen thing has been around for a long time already, with the DS/3DS and then the Wii U, and while for the most part it wasn't used for anything special, having a small secondary screen to show HUD elements, map etc to keep it off the main screen isn't a bad idea, at least when done on a handheld. On the Wii U I found it was a hassle to keep looking down at the gamepad for games that required that, and having to take your eyes away from the main action can be a bad idea sometimes. But there are cases where having a secondary screen is a big deal, for example in Four Swords Adventures and how that game used the GBA screens, I thought that was a really cool concept. Games like that wouldn't be the same with everyone on one screen.

I don't really have any objections to putting a screen on the controllers, as long as the price isn't crazy, and it's actually used for things that justify having it there. I'm not too concerned about battery life, because the screen's not that big, and OLED (which I assume is what they're using here) is very power efficient when displaying a mostly black image.
The usage cases in the concept images are a good example of the entirely wrong use for an in-controller display. That's just gonna make you have to look away from the main action to check basic information, and that fraction of a second can mean the difference between life and death. If that's the best they can come up with then they clearly haven't thought this through.
Granted it's not particularly important information, so you would very rarely have to look down on the controller in those specific examples. I'm just worried that devs will treat it the same way they treated the bottom screen on the DS/3DS and put maps, inventory management, menus etc. on that screen so that you're forced to use it frequently. In singleplayer you can at least pause the game to check the secondary screen but in multiplayer that's often not an option.

I like the idea of the screen, but like all other controllers whose concept images included a whole-surface-covering irregular shaped touchscreen, it will shrink to a small rectangular screen in later designs, and then cut entirely in the end model.

This.

Either have an idea of cost of production and manufacturing challenges or don't tease people with fake crap.
