Netflix claims that Fortnite is one of its biggest competitors

netflix-logo.png

When it comes to digital streaming, Netflix is one of the largest contenders, being one of the most well known services of them all, managing to reach a massive $16 billion dollars in revenue last year. Netflix tends to vie for consumer's money and time against the likes of Hulu or HBO, or even YouTube, but according to a new earnings report, there's an even bigger enemy to the company; Epic Games' insanely popular video game Fortnite. In the document, Netflix stated that, "we earn consumer screen time, both mobile and television, away from a very broad set of competitors. We compete with (and lose to) Fortnite more than HBO". The company appears to be considering not only subscription numbers, but also how often its users watch content, with Netflix earning about 10% of all viewed television content, and even less when it comes to mobile, which Fortnite tends to dominate in. Despite the gap in both products, Netflix views a free mobile game as more of a stronger competitor rather than other paid television services, showing just how much of a titan that Fortnite has become since its launch.

Some of you think Fortnite is bad. I used to camp spawns in Everquest for hours on end back in the day. Fight mob. Sit down and meditate for 5 mins. Mob respawns, so get back up and fight mob again.

Sit down again.

Noooo, it's just overrated and like every other battle royal game ever.

It makes sense if you think about it.
Instead of watching marathons, people use their precious time playing Fortnite. That makes Netflix users lose avg screen time spent on the Netflix app.
But they're still getting paid even if people use the service less, so it doesn't really matter. In fact it saves them bandwidth and server resources so it's essentially free money.

I like how people are saying Netflix is trash Here's a clue, guys : it uses an algorithm that provides you with more of the same, based on your preferences. So what does it mean when you say it's trash?

Okay, okay : I admit ... It sometimes seem to advertise pretty subpar productions (Cloverfield paradox, anyone? :P). But still : inform yourself on what's good (to your liking) and watch more of that.

As to the thread... Meh. It's probably not untrue that many people spend their free time elsewhere, but it's still weird to say. It may be true, but it's not something you can do much with.

... Netflix is going to broadcast fortnite players right?

Netflix confirmed that to me I wasn't a misogynist when it recommended me a ton of shows because I like shows with strong independent female leads.

Actually pluto tv should be a competition to Netflix and hulu because it's 100% free and it's live tv + whatever you want to watch anywhere anytime with options on a android device (im on a 2017 LG K8 and the app works good with a damaged soc) with internet all the time (unless your on U.S cellular because their network is a slow piece of crap most of the time in my area and it loses the connection to my phone sometimes when im inside)

But it's pretty good and i give them a 8.5 out of 10 for what they are trying to do only because there are not alot of shows that i watch in the app yet.

Netflix is insane. I'm still subscribing for now, but find the latest price hike pretty ridiculous when they're about to lose 20% of their content. Things may get ugly for them once Disney+ hits.

Indeed but I am not supporting Disney+ as well. Disney raise the parking and themed park.. And a fast food price are crazy. The drink, oh my gosh, so pricey. I know because I lived in Florida for 9 years.. Cannot stand it. Cost of living is so high!

Nah, I won't support Disney+ as well. None.

In some ways though that is much akin to me not working and having free time because I am living on savings.

If they don't have the eyeballs their negotiation position is weakened on basically all fronts -- less inclined to have shows sold to them, less inclined to get the big name directors/actors/... for their in house stuff (money is nice but money and exposure it is where it is at), probably some increased customer churn (though many people do seem to go in for this monthly charge approach to the world there are enough of them out there that people start to cull them) or sharing (if I only watch two things and my mate can use it the rest of the time I will do that and see them unable to play for a couple of hours once every few months), while not the only game in town they are certainly one of the bigger and probably don't want to be reduced to also-ran status...

While their algorithms are the subject of much discussion (others playing along at home do go read what they do -- apparently they track hundreds of descriptors, think plot keywords https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094012/keywords?ref_=tt_stry_kw level, and go accordingly) their selections thanks to lawyers can leave a bit to be desired, especially if you don't stuff it over a VPN to somewhere like the US. Similarly just because they use an algorithm that seems to try to optimise for watch time does not mean the end result is something satisfying for humans*.

*I once read a review on IMDB for a 90s film made before CGI took off. The reviewer was complaining about how they could recognise all the common studio lots. This was not a pattern I ever picked up on but I have done others and found it curious. Repetition of themes is enough to veg out on the sofa for but it ultimately ends up being somewhat meaningless and you might want something out of left field of that will challenge you.

That said I was watching a talk the other day about narrative complexity and its relation to intelligence and I wonder what kind of data netflix could generate there seen as it has such a broad slice, or indeed if they have such a thing. Bonus is they have the data on people watching, and what you can presume are their kids.

I wouldn't call it trash.

However, as a cord cutter, I'm always leery about price hikes. People like me always look for bang-for-the-buck deals, so when taking into account Netflix's price hike in the face of a considerable loss of content, it's just not the same service I originally signed up for, which is why I'll be cancelling it.

Oh, okay, that's understandable. Well in my opinion so long as they don't keep increasing the price, I'll always find $12-15 better than $100+ for cable. However, they keep it up, I'll cancel it too.

Netflix...what's that? i'm too busy pirating downloading the shit out of whatever i want with no limits or expiration on USN :creep:
Yeah...that was also my first thought when my girllfriend wanted to try the service. And for the first month, I thought it'd be a disappointment (game of thrones? Nope...Silicon valley? Nope). So it's pretty hard to search around on the net on what might interest you, because there is a lot of "oh, sorry...we don't have THAT". Strangely enough, things seem to differ as well in time and geographic location (I could've sworn "attack on Titan" and "the big short" were on netflix, but when I wanted to watch them, they'd dissapear).

But as a non-English speaker, I can't deny that proper subtitles are a blessing. When using...a certain program...I can easily WATCH everything, but half the time subtitles are either non-existant or not syncing to speak at all.

So while I certainly don't regret quitting it (girlfriend and me got to save up on small costs), it was pretty neat to watch some foreign series (3%, casa de papel) without the hassle of getting subtitles to work properly.

It's weird that Pornhub isn't their biggest competitor.
Netflix has better audio. :tpi:

I didn't know there was so many trash commenters on GBAtemp... Spreading their "Wise tastes" as the holly graal to agree with... This the high level pathetic tbh.

But yes they'are quite right, they are competitors because i can see myself also having to face a "decision" to decide either to play or watch Netflix/any show.
And fortnite itself might not be the answer, but Fortnite and his battlepass could be.

It's a freakin time consumer to grind this shit x).
