VLC would be a godsend homebrew app for the Switch.
It would be the one-in-all media player the Switch so desperately needs.
Wish it was coming for the Wii U too, but oh well :D

I'd love to see VLC on the Switch with USB media support.

It would be nice when travelling to only need the Switch instead of also bringing another device around (e.g. Fire Stick), if only they also add Netflix and Prime support.

Id prefer plex tbh

Given the differences in how they work, I would rather see both on the Switch.

well, if they include the sync option of plex, no need of VLC IMO

The main downside to sync is that you need to pay for a pass.

Even if VLC is restricted from external storage, if it's completely free even if you have to use network file transfers, there's still a benefit to having it on the platform.

"He said he is thinking about bringing the media player to Sony’s PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Roku devices."

Thinking about it =/= it's coming. How would VLC on a (non modded) switch even work?

sure, but you must admit that plex is very cheap if you pay it every month or every year
I pay it 40$/year

Obviously it depends on your usage, at £31.99/year I wouldn't think it was great value given my (current) usage.

I did however snag lifetime before a price rise a few years ago, at that price I did feel it was worthwhile.

Even with lifetime, I still alternate between using Plex and other software e.g. VLC/Kodi.

If they're restricted from full USB device/mSD access, I suspect they'll end up using the network for file management e.g. you load up a web browser on a computer and drag+drop files onto the Switch.

A similar feature already exists on the iOS version IIRC.

yea well, lifetime pass might be more worthwhile
but 150$ hits more the wallet than 40$/year

Not gonna happen. VLC is open source and may contain several security flaws (it has tons of network related features etc).
It might not happen by official means, it could just be released as uncompiled source code for the Switch, ready for users to compile into an installable NSP.

There is no restriction regarding open source software on closed platforms such as the Switch. And VLC has been available for retail Xbox One consoles for a long time, no dev mode required.

Yes and the switch doesn't even have netflix or amazon prime video; although the netflix chef said that he's interested in having an app on the switch serveral times. VLC with all the network playback options etc. looks like the perfect app to attack if you search an entry point. Nintendo doesn't really care for multimedia apps.
Microsoft is far more open when it comes to this stuff. The fact that the X1 even HAS a dev mode speaks for itself. They have much more thrust in their security.
