At the end of last year my friend hacked my New Nintendo 3DS XL. I have since lost all contact with him, the system needs to update, I no-longer have access to online multiplayer, freeshop is dead, and I have no idea where to start or how to proceed. I'm worried about losing my data, games, or getting bricked. This is very important to me since I am disabled. My 3DS is literally what keeps me sane for all my doctors appointments, and hospital stays. I'll tell you what I do know about my N3DS, if someone can help point me in the right direction or guide me along that would be fantastic!...

Current Firmware Version: SYS 11.6.0-39U
Current FBI Version: 2.5.0
Current Homebrew Version: 2.0.0
No Luma as far as I can tell. I do know that he used DSI ware game "Faceez: Monsters!" To hack the N3DS and "Box Boy demo version" (I think he put both applications into a folder together)
And there is an application that lets me backup games, change play coin amount, and other stuff but I don't know what its called I don't see an application name so I'll post a picture.

If someone could help me update my N3DS safely please help me! If I can't update it to a hacked version of 11.8, what do I do next? I can follow most instructions and am not a complete technological dunce, but I don't know where to start and how to do this properly.

Ask me anything you need to know to help. I will give you as much info as you need if you need more information.

I have held the button for more than 30 seconds right after booting it up. Nothing happens. I restarted the 3DS and tried again still nothing.

You have several options depending how comfortable or thorough you wish to update the custom firmware and 3DS firmware.

Super Easy
  1. Replace the boot.firm on the SD card root with Luma3DS v9.1 found here. You will need 7-Zip or WinRAR program to extract it.
This will allow you to update to 3DS firmware 11.9.0-42U without boot problems. However, your custom firmware on the internal CTRNAND will not have the latest Luma3DS.
Any time you boot without the SD card, you will get the "Failed to apply 1 FIRM patch(es)" error.

Easy

(cont.)

2. Overwrite and replace the files and folder with GodMode9 v1.7.1 downloaded from here.
  • sdmc:/luma/payloads/GodMode9.firm
  • sdmc:/gm9 (copy & paste the entire folder)
3. Turn on the 3DS and hold (Start) button to access Luma3DS chainloader and select GodMode9.
4. Press (HOME) button → Scripts... → GM9Megascript → Scripts from Plailect's Guide → Setup Luma3DS to CTRNAND → etc.
These additional steps will update the CTRNAND so you can boot without the SD card.

***

Somewhat more involved but will update everything but still easy-ish
  1. Cheat in collecting files by using the starter kit found here. Copy and paste over.
    • Your 3DS games are located in the Nintendo 3DS folder. Everything else is homebrew stuff.
  2. If you want all three (3) Luma3DS, GodMode9, and boot9strap to be updated not missing anything, follow this guide:
    • Updating B9S
    • This is more or less like the above with the addition of B9S.
  3. To update homebrew apps found on HOME Menu, you'll need to use FBI app select and install whichever *.cia files of interest from the sdmc:/cias folder.

***

Other Notes
  • Make a backup of your SysNAND if you don't have one. This is in the event you softbrick the 3DS and need to recover with it.
  • Get into the practice of making frequent enough back ups of your saves + extdata with either Checkpoint or JKSM save manager.
  • Read the rest of 3ds.hacks.guide to pick up other tips and pointers.
  • For any further questions or help much later, refer to this thread:

Thank you, I will take a look at all info you provided, and see where to go from there! I'll update the thread in the event of either success or failure. Thank you all that have helped so far!

Sorry for the late response. I encountered a huge hiccup since my computer decided to break the day I was going to update the 3ds mod. I got it back, now I have a question about the "Super Easy" instructions. If I were to Replace the boot.firm on the SD card root, would I still have access to the games I previously downloaded from freeshop that are saved on the SD card? As well as the custom firmware I mentioned in my first post? I never use my DS without the SD card. If I am unable to use the programs/games I already have using the "Super Easy" method, what would you suggest? Again I am completely uninformed when it comes to things like this, I apologize if my questions are repetitive or obvious.

Your games and everything will be fine. Luma is more like a set of patches and features that injects into the actual firmware of the system.
