Slightly Mad Studios chooses final design for its Mad Box console

After teasing a couple of possible designs for their upcoming Mad Box console, Slightly Mad Studios' CEO Ian Bell revealed via Twitter the design that the company has opted for. If you were following the recent flow of design concepts shared, then you will recognize it as the fourth render, the futuristic-looking rectangular shaped one that supports three orientations: horizontal, vertical and wall mounted. It also features a front touch screen that supports slide, click and tap actions while displaying what is currently being played. Ian Bell further adds that the design "might be slightly amended over time...".

The company's founder later posted another tweet with a concept video teasing the console running games and other media:

Do you approve of the console's design? What would you like to see changed or improved in the final look?

Has the external design of a case (also ew neons, such things are easily bypasses or coloured in though) actually mattered since we stopped calling PCs "beige boxes"?

Tell me some specs or get word from engine makers/big devs/big pubs and I might shift to vaguely being interested.

I still think that this is the best design. The other ones looked much more boring. One of the designs was just a cube

it'll most likely be vaporware/disappointing anyways so

The specs and the price, damnit. I won't say that the looks or the name is unimportant (ahem...wiiu, anyone?), but this "the public has spoken" is pissing me off.

Also...WTF is with the touchscreen? Displaying the game name already seems like a useless feature, but who really wants to get up from their couch to touch the console when you've got a controller in hand?

While it may be dredging up unpleasant memories of modern “gaming”-branded peripherals, as well as capitalizing too much on this whole RGB craze, I feel that even if this system was a simple black box similar to the Xbox One/PS4, people would still be giving it flak for being generic-looking.

Besides, these days, it seems that the game engine you use is more important than your target platform anyhow. I’m curious as to how the team behind this is working to support major game engines like Unity, UE4, and so on and so forth.

Being a "generic black box" is still more appealing than looking like a router or jukebox. I agree, though. I'm more interested in the software side of things myself. At least now that it looks somewhat like a "gaming" platform.

If they are also flogging it as a media box then I can see it.

The “M” logo looks similar in design to the Majin “M” from DBZ so I’m gonna call this the Majin Box from now on.

But for real though, no matter how “cool” you make your console look it’s nothing without games to play on it.

Isn't this console not due out for another 3-4 years (according to an interview)? How can they prematurely choose and announce a design for their box right now when they haven't even decided on what's actually going to be inside?
