I’m on 4.1.0. I want to be able to play backups on my emunand and play bought games online on sysnand. I haven’t done anything on my current sysnand except for play a few hours of arms and Mario odyssey (from a cart). I haven’t even connected online.

I’m a bit confused at the proper way to do things. I don’t want to burn my fuses (so have the ability to downgrade if needed in the future).

  1. Should I Update sysnand to 6.2. Then create an emunand (so it will already be 6.2)

  2. In the future update emunand with choidujournx and update sysnand through the regular Nintendo update? Or will I burn my fuses if I update sysnand normally/or downgrade sysnand in the future?

I would keep your sysnand on 4.1, create an emunand, and update the emunand. This gives you no online, though. I would say the only truly safe way to play online is to have two switches, one modded and one not.

Booting normally will burn fuses. Updating through Ninty's official stuff is fine, as long as you can immediately enter RCM before the Switch reboots into ninty's bootloader that burns fuses. AutoRCM would also be recommended so Ninty's bootloader never runs, but system updates overwrite autoRCM so you have to reinstall it.

What about if I want to play online on the same switch? Is it just actually not possible to have the sysnand and emunand both on the latest firmware and update them (whenever the newest update is supported for cfw of course, not immediately)?

The say I see it is that even if I get banned, I can then get a second switch. If I buy a second one right now i'm not testing out the possibility of playing online without needing one. That and sdcard emunand seems pretty solid.

Under what scenario would booting normally burn fuses? If I have an emunand cfw set up?

Also if I immediately enter rcm mode upon starting the switch how can I access sysnand to play games i've bought online? (which I want to do).

if you burn your fuses with an official update, use emunand (preferred on a hidden partition) and boot horizon without rcm , you should be pretty safe for an ban (my opinion).

if what i thought happens, it makes no difference if your using nand or emunand because the firmware has set to burn xyz fuses and checks, if for example 4.1 requires xyz fuses burned and then 6.2 requires xyz+abc when you try boot 4.1 and xyz+abc fuses are burned the system wont boot, same as if you try boot 6.2 and only xyz fuses are burned.

the fuses i thought there was no way around this because the firmware demands that the number of fuses required has to be burned and if it doesnt match it wont boot.

something i feel a little scared of in the years to come when or if nintendo keep rolling out updates, what happens when theres no fuses left?

I guess you would be able to downgrade as you like since there wouldn't be any downgrade protection anymore. Anyways, everyone believes there to be hundreds of them so your switch will be in a box in your basement by then.

how would that work, when 4.1 will need only (for example) 2 of 5 fuses blown and you have 4 of 5 blown.

if the requirement doesnt match it wont boot.

Only Ninty's official bootloader & really old versions of SX burn fuses when booting. Using something like Hekate or Fusee makes sure that no fuses get burned. Besides, you can't exactly boot into an emunand with the stock bootloader. Booting stock with Ninty's bootloader does burn fuses though, but I think Atmosphere patched lower firmware sleeping with higher firmware fuses if you're willing to wait for Atmo to get emunand support.

We're not going to realistically run out of fuses in the array before the EoL of the Switch as Nintendo's not burning them fast enough unless the Switch lasts for a decade. Once it runs out, you can degrade down to the point of "the firmware that burned the last fuse" beyond that nothing else will happen in the event all fuses are burned.

The rate of fuse burning is also generally going to slow as the console ages as we run out of exploits to burn for them to burn with fuses for software-wise protections, and a lot of 'big' exploits have been burned already and Nintendo seems to know where to look nowadays for nVidia memes.

Wait I need 6.2 to link my account, can I go into hbmenu on custom firmware and update using Choi and go online without being banned? Haven't used any hacks so far, on a clean 4.1 system.

Yes, as long as you do something like booting stock with Hekate. Going online with CFW currently running isn't that great of an idea, even Atmosphere isn't entirely safe (but one of my friends did go online with it a while ago & hasn't gotten banned yet). Booting stock with Hekate is totally safe though, it just boots sysnand with no hacks but, since you're not using Ninty's bootloader, it doesn't burn fuses.

So if I boot sysnand from sx os launcher I should be fine. Awesome.

But how do I update sysnand to 6.2 in the first place without burning my fuses?

Should I set up sxos launcher on 4.1 and then update sysnand through choid?
