now sx os has 3 emunand options, which is best? I see that hidden partition on sx card is recommended, but I don’t really want to reformat my sd card. The recommendation comes from sx, but I want to know what everyone here thinks is best. Does it even matter how emunand is installed? I’d like to use emunand on the system storage so I can save space on the sd card. Any input is welcome, just don’t light me up. :) Thanks

I think with the hidden partition it'd be harder to detect than the option that splits the SysNAND(just speculation, I don't know 100% since I'm not Nintendo) and it's likely more reliable than the option that stores the NAND in files on the SD card(not 100% sure about this but I think this was the reason people still hated the emuNAND implementation that stored the NAND as files on the SD).

I never had issues with any of the versions but I'll be using the partition. What I did was:
Backed up my saves with Checkpoint.
Backed up my SD card.
Installed emuNAND with the hidden partition.
Restored the files on my SD card (excluding the emuNAND in the sxos folder).
Launched the games that's saves I backed up (so they show up in Checkpoint).
Restored my saves.
(this was migrating from NAND being stored on SD to NAND as a partition)

I dont think nintendo can read or detect whatever you have on your SD card , that stuff would be illegale.

Apparently wouldn't, as they can have a "software" in place, which would check for it, but would report nothing about what you have if this or that is present.
@Draxzelex told me this once.

Regardless of whether or not they are allowed to read stuff off of the SD card, that alone wouldn't be evidence of a hacked console. If someone were to insert an SD card full of backups and homebrew on a non-hacked console, that would be a false positive so there's no way they would use that metric even on a hacked console.

If using emuNAND as files on sd card or hidden partition will they stop u being able to swap sd card in for other games? Or would emuNAND only need copied once?

I normally agree with you but your logic is proven demonstrably false here.

One quickly proven proof of this is pokemon go for android. Even if you turn off sd card (and storage in general) access in the app's permissions, niantic (and by extent Nintendo) read the card anyways, and -do- automatically ban and block you from even opening the game whatsoever if even the slightest hint of a trace of many things are present. This is even in cases where the entire device and operating system have not been tampered with, and nothing "modified" has been placed or installed on the system. The mere presence of even -portions- and leftover -remnants- of some folder and file names on a microsd card is literally used as justification for and active reason to ban and block complete access to the software.

So yes, nintendo and others can and -do- do exactly this. Whether they do or not with the switch i cant verifiably say, but telling people companies cant or dont do it is a lie at worst and misleadingly uninformed at best.

I think it is not really hard to detect if Nintendo will.... because of "Emutendo" folder on your SD card.

What exactly do you need for a source? A few sources would be myself, and tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands android spoofers. Its not a secret issue. Its well known and public knowledge in the spoofing threads related to pokemon go on reddit, as well as popular rooting threads such as Magisk support or release threads over at xda. If you want to verify it yourself with real-time ddiscussion, simply pop over to probably the biggest pokemon go spoofing discord server, pokedex100, which I happen to be one of the highest ranking staff members of.

Everything i posted is factual, its not my opinion.

I love Drax to death, and normally he's spot on, but in this particular instance he put out "common sense advice" that simply doesnt happen to be true in reality, though I wish it were.

I was using EmuNAND with the hidden partition and decided to go back to EmuNAND files on the SD.

I liked the idea of having a separate partition, as I assumed it would allow me to re-format the actual visible partition to FAT32/exFat in the event of a data corruption issue, without any need to have to reinstall EmuNAND.

I gave it a try last night, and to my surprise, it formatted everything. Perhaps there is a better tool to use to get this done, but in the end I decided to go back to files on the SD, as it allows me to backup the entire EmuNAND/SDCard without the need to go through and set EmuNAND up all over again (in the case of data corruption).

I didn’t consider the fact that it may be harder to detect though, but if you’re not going online in CFW, I don’t really see the point tbh. Unless something changes, I’ll probably stay on this setup. It takes 10 mins to restore the EmuNAND backup this way, opposed to waiting 40mins for SXOS to redump my system NAND.

Wat speed of sd card u using is wat speed is emuNAND on internal read write speeds? Did u get any slow down?

I can’t tell you what the actual speed of the card is off hand, but it’s a class10 256gb SanDisk. Using the slot in my surface pro, it has a write speed of approx 50MBPS iirc.

Can’t say what the speed is on the switch side, as I’m not sure, but I haven’t noticed any slowdown. But I’ve never run anything off the official NAND for fear of damaging it. Everything goes to the SD, so perhaps there is some but I just don’t know the difference

For source I meant a link to a discussion, article, video, etc, but I did a search on reddit and found more about it. Interesting case, no less, but it stills seems like a violation of privacy or TOS, something Nintendo might not be wanting to risk in their territory. Remember, Niantic is not Nintendo and vice-versa: they can have completely different business practices, which might or not include violations to consumers rights in some countries. In any case, I'm still waiting for a emunand ban report with clean nand use in OFW (if there has already been one, I would gladly ask for source, since I've been out of the loop for sometime).

No, I agree with you. I wasnt saying nintendo DOES this, I said it CAN be done, and IS being done by other companies, and then gave the real life example of pokemon go on android for the proof reference, since drax said companies couldnt do it (but they do). Is it unethical and shady as hell? Absolutely, and as someone who works in the tech industry I also feel that it could be ruled illegal with a good court battle. But thats not my call. I was simply providing the truth to the misinformation that it cant happen.

1) Nintendo isnt niantic, which is why I stated in my post I cant vouch for nintendo's policy on this with the switch will be. I can only vouch for the fact that businesses CAN and DO perform this exact check that drax specifically stated doesnt happen (it does).

2) Nintendo does license the game's rights to niantic, so while nintendo doesnt make business decisions such as deciding to read a microsd card of an androud and acting upon the contents found, they are involved in more behind the scenes decisions than one might think in pokemon go. Its a partnership in that game, and we know how stringent big n is with anything they dip into with rights, licensing, usage, etc.

3) I personally use virgin sysnand and emunand sx os and go online and havent been banned (yet). So im hoping nintendo DOESNT start this policy, trust me. I just want people to arm themselves with the truth of whats really going on vs what people think a company can and cant do.

Trust me, I want to be able to go online and use emunand to avoid being banned. And i dont think nintendo should have the right to ban me simply based on any assortment of files that may or may not be being actually used sitting on my microsd. But the sad truth is, nintendo makes the console -and- the software running on it, and courts have already ruled in similar lawsuits that the manufacturer owns the rights to banning consoles from its online network at their discretion. So its really a shitty area to be sitting in as a user, believe me, but its what we have to live with, understand, and arm ourselves with the knowledge of. Personally, id rather be informed than not, and thats the only reason i make such a point to present this info, because if other companies do it (and they are), it sets a precedent (not legal mind you but just in usage) for other companies to follow.

If I use 2 sd cards, do I need to change to hidden partition ?

Its many users' belief (including mine), that the -best chance- of nintendo NOT detecting your emunand is to use the hidden partition microsd emunand option. This is merely my opinion, and to my knowledge noone has been banned for simply using emunand properly (up to this point) in any of its 3 forms. But that being said, it is my belief, based on how the microsd is formatted, that utilizing the hidden partition emunand offers you the greatest chance of success of not receiving a ban if used correctly.

Edit to more directly respond: If youre using two sd cards, specifically, and NOT GOING ONLINE while using the emunand card, then no, it does not matter which microsd type of emunand you choose.

Sorry to butt in, I'm thinking of making an emunand for the first time. I already have lots of nsps on my sd card - if I choose the partition then these will all be deleted, is this correct? And if I just use it with the emunand on the sd card this won't happen?
