Dearest Anjiera and everyone who joined their hands together on this project to see it come to life,

HUGE THANK YOU!
I have been following this project's status for years, always wishing to see the day that I could play this gem on my DS. No words can express the gratitude I felt when you have finally released the patch.

Now, things weren't going so smoothly when I tried to apply it, as I was getting the (error -4) messages constantly. So I decided to write down what I did in order for it to work.

I am using a very old R4 card (R4 Revolution for DS (NDSL/NDS)), with a 1.0GB micro SD card:

The YSMENU fix did not work for me, so I have tried the following, which eventually worked:
1. Formatted my SD card using the maximal block size, as suggested by Anjiera on page 63.
2. Downloaded the most recent kernel files for my card, from old.r4wood website.
3. AP patched the Japanese rom using DS_SCENE ROM TOOL
4. Applied the ARM7 patch to the rom.
5. Run the game through the original kernel.

Everything works, from saving to sleep mode. No problems so far!
I hope that this will be useful to some of you guys, the same way I was trying the other methods suggested on this thread.

As a side note, I always felt grumpy that this title was not officially released on the DS or even the 3DS. I bought the PS3 version and started playing it, but it just doesn't have the same charming effects of the handheld. I even bought the English spellbook in hope that I will use it when I play the patched DS version :)
So, again, thank you for everyone involved in this project who made it possible!

Great work on this project, I was looking for it for some time and now it's finally done. I've been really enjoying this game and it's heading to be one of my favorite NDE games.

I was wondering, since you guys took a long time to make this project, probably you would be looking to make things as perfect as possible. Would you guys like to open a new topic to post only about translations mistakes, continuity or things like that? As an example, the ghost wizard talk about a recipe to speedshoes but the recipe name is running boots, is this a mistake or just the way it was supposed to be?
This could be really helpful.
We may also write a "compatibility guide" (patch, device, R4, SD, etc.).

@Anjiera :

hi :)
I'd like to report something

Thanks! We tried to catch all the bugs, but it is surprising the things that everyone misses but one person spots. I know there are people here who will say "this is why you should have released patch files thriughthr the translation process, but we think we've caught most of the issues (outside of all of these crazy flashcard probelems).

Someone else suggested opening a separate thread for bug reports, but I think having eveyrtever here makes it easier for both people reporting issues and for us, so please keep posting here.

The files that we translate from are often mostly contextless, so I'm sure someone just miseead the Japanese and mistranslated it. (That someone is provably me, haha). I'll fix it so that it is better in the next build.

I found an interesting bug. The game freezes when I try to exchange prizes in Casino and I don't know why. Does it happen to anybody else?

Oh, crap! That's sounds bad! This is when you trade nedals for an item? I'll try that from one of my Del Mokahl save files when I get home.

Also...how the crap are you already at the Casino and have enough winnings to exchange for prizes!?!??? You guys are all so hardcore with this game! Wow. Haha.

Would you guys like to open a new topic to post only about translations mistakes, continuity or things like that?

It is easier for us and for players if there is just one thread, I think. But thanks for the suggestion! I'll add the speed shoes to my list of bugs to fix - we definitely changed the name of that item at one point, and I guess we didn't catch all the places it existed in the text. I've set up an email address you can send screenshots to, so if you have anything that is easier shown that described, please send it to:
[email protected]

I'll add that to the first post here, too, for people to see.

Anyone? I tried to activate the DLC via "dwc network server emulator", but I can't connect my DSi to my router or to my phone via tethering. Is a cheat available to activate it?

The DLC quests all on the cart, and should be unlocked already. The only thing that you can't get yet is the Wizards Daily Gazette newsletter from the Connect screen on the main menu, but that's because we haven't set up a server to be able to download those files from yet.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I am able to replicate this bug.
Can you remind me what part of the game it is when your wand is able to learn that spell? I have save files archived theoughthr the game to make it easier to test stuff quickly, but I don't remember when / where this is to be able to try it myself.

I'm glad you found the report useful, and I think keeping everything to the same place is easier. people will still post here even if you create a dedicated thread, and you'll have to gather info from both anyway.
hmm, sending directly to that email is another solution and might be easier than put on PC resize and upload to forum, but we won't know if it was already reported. I might use it too, thanks.

As for that sentence, maybe it's hard to spot Japanese Future tense when it's out of context (there are only past and non-past, right?). I guess the kid expected us to do it, rather than noticing it done.

Don't worry about perfection, you can read and read again and you'll always miss something. let us help you now for a future script fix release. (not talking about flashcart issue which might comes out without any other changes on the script).

I'm reading the book, I enjoyed very much all the tales located at the end :)
it was already in english from PS3? if not, you did a very good job!

I encounter a bug on dream world

On the third ridle, the answer is obvious from the astram number on the leaves, which is "0", but the game says it's wrong. I also already looked up guide and the answer is also "0". If i have to guess, this zero on keyboard is actually O because they look exactly the same and there is no zero coded on keyboard.

When the second City was unlocked and I got my first real wand, I tried all runes out of curiousity while still being in the first city.

Translation was from Japanese to English, but the ROM hacker from the Spanish team, and some of the graphics files (esp. scans of the Magic Master, and PSD layouts for all of the pages of the Magic Master) were provided by them, too, which made our job consiserably easier.

I created a shitpile of project management files to keep track of our project progress because when I first started we just had a wall of files and folders and not a good sense of where we were at. I'm a visual person and I like lists and checkboxes and color coded (green for done, yellow for started, red for not yet started) planning spreadsheets. I think that helped motivate me in the early days and definitely made it easier to coordinate the larger team size as we grew the group over time, since people could put their name on tasks and we could see if a file or an area of the game was in neednof or done translation, editing, and graphics work.

The tools @pleonex has created for working with the game are all excellent, and I send people working on other language versions to his GitHub page to check out the tools because they are just so handy! :)

Thanks for the insight, you guys made and incredible job on this one :)

Once you get the wand from Catnap Kingdom. I wanted to learn all of the spells I could at the time and resurrect was the most interesting one, though was said to badly affect the user. I guess in a sense the game freezing could be an effect, though not intentional lol

This translation came as a christmas gift :D I was so affraid of not being able to play it because of my crappy PC, but I'm playing it on NO$GBA 2.6a(that's how crappy my PC is), and the first hours of the game are working well enough so far, with some minor graphical glitches every now and then. In case someone has a crappy PC like me and have to try this on NO$GBA 2.6a or another version of it, you'll need to check the emulator EX0 on Other > EXTRA otherwise you won't be able to do the spell mini-games(the game will tell you that it doesn't recognize your drawing). Also, you'll need to keep EX3 checked in case you're having issues with audio on battles. You'll need to check EX5 too in case you're having some issues with audio on animated cutscenes.

Can't believe how far some people have got already. I've been so lax! I was one of the Photoshop peeps helping out and I'm only just at the Casino.
thank you for your work :)

don't worry, I'm worse than you, I just left catnap (missing 2 missions I can't completes, I guess that's normal? can't find anyone giving Motivation).

Hello and thanks you for your amazing work.
I really wanted to play this and this English translation makes that possible.

However I having problems making it works on my flashcard. It's a r4i 3ds from www.r4i-sdhc.com. I have the latest retro fan game update/YS menu (v7.05), from that thread https://gbatemp.net/threads/retrogamefan-updates-releases.267243/, installed on it. Sadly the rom gives me error code 4 when I try to load it. The Japanese version load perfectly. And the patched version load in a emulator, just not on my flashcard.
I patched with both xdelta ui 1.1 and xdelta3 command line on linux and it gaves me the same result.
The problem is most likely coming from my flashcard / retrofanGame update / ys menu. But i would like to know if I can fix it nonetheless.

Thanks again for the outstanding work.

edit : I have been able the load the patched rom on a supercard dstwo. I have tried to apply the "DAT FIX"( page 64 of this thread https://gbatemp.net/threads/ni-no-kuni-translation-eng.373770/page-64#post-8424842) on my other flashcard but that did not work. So i suppose i will play with a dsTWO.

Thanks to the translators ! I've been lurking this thread for the last few years, I can't believe this day has finally come!

However, I can't get this game to work on my TTDSi card (the card has double boot TTDS menu and ysmenu) using a DSi. The original rom boots fine, and the patched one works in DesMuMe.
I've tried the TTDS menu fix, loading from kernel, unticking all options on ysmenu, reformating the card so it has a bigger block, applying the arm7 patch over the translated one (xdelta doesn't let me apply it to the original one for some reason), I've also tried first applying the AP patch via DS Scene Rom Tool. I'm kind of at a loss what to do. YSmenu shows all the cheats available, but refuses to boot it. I always get the -4 error.

Anybody else have an idea? Or even a clue on how to make xdelta patch the original rom with the arm7 patch?

a clue on how to make xdelta patch the original rom with the arm7 patch?
the same way you patch the game using the original patch.

launch xdelta UI 1.1
select the "arm7.patch"
select the ORIGINAL (not english patched) japanese ROM
select the filename where to write the patched game to. (name it ni no kuni - the jet-black mage [en_original_arm7].nds, or whatever you want)
press patch, and play the game with the resultered patched game.

I added the info that you need to apply the restored arm7 patch file on a CLEAN UNPATCHED ROM, I thought it was enough to understand it worked the same way, just use that patch in place of the other.

it tells me that I've got wrong input and doesn't let me.
error message: xdelta3: target error checksum mismatch: XDR_INVALID_INPUT

I also tried to manually replace the arm7.bin file in the patched rom with Tinke, but it still doesn't work :/

replacing arm file manually using tinke should work fine.
you can patch the game with the original 1.0 patch, but doing it with the restored arm patch doesn't work ?

wrong input? or target error ? your error messages is about target error.
pick a new filename for the target, don't pick the original file as target, it can't overwrite the original with the patched version. you need to choose a new filename for the english patched game.

are you sure you have the proper japanese rom ?
I posted checksum few page ago, you can try to check your checksums to see if you have proper files.

also, you are using xdeltaui.exe, right ?
not the xdelta.exe directly.

How do I check checksums?

Yes, I'm using the xdeltaui, as I said, I can patch it with just the translation patch fine (and it runs in an emulator). It doesn't matter what I try to name it, it doesn't work.
