Sega Saturn classic Panzer Dragoon will be getting a remake

IMG_2405.JPG

One of the more standout titles from the short-lived Sega Saturn will be getting remade soon. Forever Entertainment has been hired by SEGA to remake Panzer Dragon I and II. Both games will feature brand new graphics "comparable to today's standards", and some of its gameplay elements will be modernized to make it more accessible to new players. No platform was given, but the first game's remake is confirmed to release before the end of 2019, while Panzer Dragon II: Zwei: Remake will follow the next year. More information is due in the "next few months". Forever Entertainment's previous history consists of Fear Effect: Sedna, which was moderately received by critics and fans.

Nah, I ain't no rich boy who can afford the ODE

I have a Phantom Universal modchip, it's almost entirely plug and play (just have to solder a wire for power), lets you play burned CD-Rs and such. Interestingly, I bought mine directly from the guy who made the chip for like $20, but it appears the forums where he had his store is shut down so all that's left to buy (that I can find) is the link I pasted for like 2x what I paid.
I dont care how dumb or how much it is, I do really really want an ODE. I don't wanna waste time burning disks and having them laying around. I want a one and done solution. Good to know there are some other good solutions out there too. In the mean time, I hope this remake is good.

This remake thing makes a sense here as apperantly it has been said that the original code for the game was lost though i have never heard this been verivied. If anyone can shed some light or if it has been said otherwise i want to know.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

A Panzar Dragoon Saga remake would be class as that game is very niche and extremly dear to buy.

I sincerely hope that Saga is not far behind because if you are going to both playing Panzer Dragoon, you go to Saga!!!

Yup! Straight up stated that the source code was lost. Said they didn't realise it until they actually went to do a hd port or something and had to cancel because of it.

I'm quite happy with this news. Recreating from scratch, trying to hit the feel of the original, is going to be fun. This isn't a lazy remake, that's for sure. let's just hope they got the budget to do it right.

I once saw this game as a trailer on an Xbox game disc that had Jet Set Radio Future, a racing game I can't remember, and a bunch of trailers for stuff like Shemune and similar. Damnit now I want to play Jet Set Radio Future, I miss that game.

Haha funny how I just got myself two saturns (one region and dfo modded and one stock) to properly play those hard-to-emulate saturn games and to enjoy some 32-bit era nostalgia.

I'm happy these are getting remade, but I'm still cautious to have too high hopes because I have not heard about this studio before and I don't want it to turn out like other half-assed remakes of late. I don't see why it would end up being that though, since for all intents and purposes, the Panzer Dragoon series is pretty niche by now and the remakes have to prove themselves as good games in order to make decent money, not like Silent Hill or other franchises that can come up with anything and it'll still sell...

About time, honestly. This was one of those must-own games for the Saturn (and I still pine for one, even though I'd need a crap-ton of accessories to make it worth the cost). it's in dire need of some love and being made accessible for modern systems.

Source on Sega losing the source code to Saga?
Yukio Futatsugi, the lead dev of the games, has stated in a couple interviews that the source code is gone. The oldest mention of it was from an interview with 1UP from 2007: https://web.archive.org/web/20160618154622/http://www.1up.com/do/feature?pager.offset=4&cId=3162634 <

Specifically:
[Futatsugi then told us the politics behind Saga's disappearance, which we can't reveal, but the gist of it has to do with the original code having been lost, making a port -- in case you're wondering -- all but unlikely.]

From interviews with other Sega devs and some "industry rumors", it's thought it was originally lost when Team Andromeda was dissolved and turned into Smilebit/Sega Sports Japan between 2004-2005.

It's not even some rare occurrence with Sega, either, apparently. Supposedly they've lost sources for a lot of their older arcade games as well, with all the changes they went through over the years.

Whats wrong with it? bought it and did 100% on PC with no issues. I know that some chain timings were changed so some infinite chains are not possible, and that some content was cut(Sonic in the Christmas Night), but I'd hardly call that a terrible remake.

The Wii game, ya know, the one that for starters completely removed the ability to play as the kids?

I haven't been gaming for such a long time. Been mostly busy with sleep, hardware tinkering and checking GBAtemp frequently.

It's going alright thanks :) I know what you mean with gaming time. It's precious where I can get it these days.

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.

Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.
