I have a major problem, not sure if it can be helped or if this is in the right section. I have a New 3DS XL. My 3DS specs are 9.2 system with a Menuhax setup, 11.1.0-34U EmuNAND (yes, I know I desperately need to update to A9LH). My sound was working perfectly fine yesterday, played Duck Tails on Nestopia in Homebrew Menu and sound was working fine. I went to try to go online to search something as my laptop's battery was dead (and since my 3DS's EmuNAND needs updating, I couldn't use the Internet). So I figured I would try to update my 3DS so I could do so. So I hit the Luma Updater app and updated that first. I did not update my EmuNAND (JUST Luma Updater). But afterwards, I noticed that my speakers were not working on ANYTHING! 9.2 system, nothing. EmuNAND, nothing. Homebrew, nothing. This seemed to happen before trying to restore my older version of the updater (no idea what version). I tried to restore an older version because CHMM wasn't working, and my sound wasn't working on my Okami theme. It seems to have restored the older version, but my sound is not working at all. Sound only works with headphones; however, I recently found out that the camera app still makes a clicking noise when taking a picture or beeps when taking videos. Did I damage something, and can I fix it or am I screwed?
- No, my slider is not in the "off" position. Its all the way up, no sound.

Bit of a necrobump here, but I've been having the same issue. Still clicks for camera, but no sound for anything else.

Yeah, so I think it may be an internal issue. Which is kind of a problem, cause the screws to get the thing apart are stripped.
Prod the audio jack with wooden kebab skewer or toothpick. I think a thin enough plastic stick should be fine. Don't use anything metal. You'll want to try loosening the contact pin that signals the 3DS to turn off the speakers when it thinks headphones are plugged in.

- The contact pin, what does that look like? Yeah, I assumed that was my issue as well.

First, use 3DSident to determine the Headphone status. This will let you know for sure your headphone port is at fault.

Here's a GBA motherboard to show what a headphone port looks like. See the metal lever pushed up when the 3.5 mm audio jack is inserted. I'm not sure if a break in continuity or unseen connection elsewhere within the connector signals a device to switch from speakers to headphones.

If prodding by toothpick or other non-conductive sticks does not fix this, try using a headphone plug. Unfortunately, the 3DS/2DS ports are slimmer and not accessible from the sides. If poking and prodding prove useless, you're left with removing and soldering in a replacement port.

Edit - There may have been innovations in audio ports over the years where the design you see below does not apply for the 3DS systems.

its really simple you get the luma3ds9.1.7z file extract it on your pc, then insert your sd card and delete from it the boot.firm file (its on the root), then copy the boot.firm from the luma3ds9.1.7z you extracted to your sd cards root

edit i forgot the link Releases · AuroraWright/Luma3DS · GitHub

- Thanks, 3DSident shown me that the headphone jack does indeed say there are headphones inserted despite no headphones being inserted. I'm trying with both a toothpick and the headphones themselves, but so far nothing is working on fixing that pin. I can get sound FROM headphones, so I guess I'll just have to put up with it.

Yeah, same here. Bit of a nuisance but I can deal with needing buds for the time being.

  • Disassemble the n3DSXL and take a multimeter to test the five (5) four (4) resistors (or capacitors?) for a break.
  • Try pushing the lever(?) inward with a small pik, toothpick, flathead screwdriver, or blunt end of a sewing needle.
  • Not sure how the three points act a secondary switch with an inserted plug.
  • If worse comes to worse, retrofit a replacement audio port: [Digi-Key] Barrel - Audio Connectors
    • Finding a suitable part with fully compatible size and specs will suck.
