NPD sales data shows top 10 best selling exclusive games since 1995, all are Nintendo games

3849-1-1.jpg

The NPD Group has been tracking United States video game sales data since 1995, offering decades of sales history to look back upon. Analyst and employee of The NPD Group, Mat Piscatella, has trawled through the available records in order to create a definitive list of best selling games, with previous lists including what titles shifted the most copies on PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. This time, Piscatella has revealed the best selling console exclusive video game titles since 1995--not including ones that were bundled with hardware--and the results show overwhelming domination by a single company: Nintendo. Every entry on the list belongs to a Nintendo system, ranging from the Wii to the Nintendo 64. The top ten are as follows.

10. Wii Sports Resort
9. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
8. Super Mario 64
7. Mario Kart DS
6. New Super Mario Bros.
5. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
4. Wii Fit Plus
3. Mario Kart Wii
2. Wii Play
1. Wii Fit

Taking the lead, perhaps surprisingly, is Wii Fit, and the top 5 are solely comprised of Nintendo Wii games. The most recent release from there is New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which hit store shelves on November 11, 2009. NPD does not track digital sales data, however none of the above games were available in a digital format at the time of release.

lol what is your data? halo 3 had bundles and if you take out the bundles it may have not sold better than smash in NA...
I don't agree. Plus NPD sales aren't 100 percent correct anyway. NPD even admitted that not everybody releases their digital sales and so forth so they have to speculate how much some games sold so the list isn't correct regarding that. They even said Nintendo doesn't release their numbers all the time so they had to keep that in mind and sometimes guess how much some sold in that year and so forth or digitally etc. The list is incorrect and that's that. In the end Halo 3 sold 14.5 million copies while smash sold around 3 million less. So if they have to guess admitting their list isn't perfect well then they could have added halo also instead since they're not sure of the bundles

vgchartz says halo 3 total sales worldwide was only 12.13 millions and ssbb sold 12.91mil so yeah it doesn't matter what you think, every website has their own count so you seeing on one website its gonna be different on another, and alot of people only bought xbox360 when halo 3 was released so the bundle probably sold really well.

i still don't agree with this list seeing they admitted they don't know the entire sales so a lot of these games sold could be due to bundles wich there are a lot of. I def don't agree with this list at all

Wii Play came out with every White Model Wii so it was basically a bundled game so it doesn't really count.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii was the bundled game of the Red Wii I think?

And wow Mario Kart DS sure was popular.

(Note: I only noticed this thread now)

Okay...now that is one WEIRD top 10.

I can understand wii fit and wii play being relatively high. AFAIK, these were indeed never sold in bundles but came with a hardware peripheral. Wii fit obviously had the balance board, and wii fit was almost a free demo you got with an extra wiimote (the games were terrible, though). But top of the list? Seriously? That either means that there's a pretty significant group of people who simply skipped all the gaming debates where these games were laughed out of the discussion and went out to buy these things, or that piracy is NOT a minority group that doesn't impact sales (meaning: if you could download wiimotes and balance boards, these games would be much lower on the list :tpi: ).

Oh, and for the record: I bought both these games. Wii play made me regret spending a couple extra euros to get a game with the wiimote I wanted, but I really liked the balance board. I still do, as a matter of fact. I won't deny that it's currently collecting dust, but in terms of playtime I'm sure it SERIOUSLY beats the average on fitness appliances (ahem...my girlfriend bought a crosstrainer to work out once...I still suspect her father and me having spent more energy on that thing by initially dragging the thing up the stairs, and - much later - back down the stairs and tossing it into the garbage dump :glare:).

Wii fit plus makes even less sense. Yes, it's a great improvement over wii fit (and yes: I bought this too!). But it's not something I think even anyone outside gamers noticed existing. I mean...sure, you can sell the wii fit as an all-round fitness appliance (quite easy, in fact: it is exactly that). And the physical board obviously draws the attention. But wii fit plus?
Okay...should've researched first: not only was wii fit plus sold both with and without a balance board, but also with a fitness tracker. nowadays everyone who wants to uses their cell phones to track their footsteps, but this tracker-thingy was ahead of its time on that. And I have to admit: in the end, I had finished all those tracks (note: only a few weeks after that, nintendo issued an update with extra, much longer tracks :P ).

So...in a weird way, it makes sense. But really: if these games sold so well, shouldn't a wii fit sequel be a top priority for nintendo?

Agreed, Nintendo GameCube and Wii got a lot of "unique" titles, but sometimes that can be interpreted as the main reason as the why those consoles didnt success greatly...
Not sure what you're talking about, as the Wii was one of the biggest successes in console history. It was only outsold by PS1, GB(C), DS and PS2 and still holds that #5 spot today.
GC was a bit of a commercial failure though, I'll give you that. Most of that seems to have been due to being targeted more at kids, when most of the gamers at the time were older and wanted more mature games (it was just when FPS games were really getting popular and consoles finally had the graphical capabilities to display more realistic graphics) and it had to compete with the PS2 which had already been out for a while and had more mature games.
Wii play was basically a demo and it came free with those Wii that didn't have Wii Sports. Or with buying an extra Wiimote.
I never heard of Wii Play coming bundled with Wiis, but it was a pretty decent deal if you got it in the Wiimote bundle. It was the 1-2-Switch of the Wii, but at least it was cheap and provided a few hours of stupid fun.

It's amazing that you don't trust NPD's data, but uses it to "validate" your opinion. Very good.

If they really "weren't sure of the bundled sales" as you say, Halo 3 would still be out of this list, as there are at least three games which sold way more than Halo 3. Like Kinect Adventures for an example, the X360's top-seller.

That was Wii Sports, Wii Play came with an extra Wiimote at the beginning. And yeah, there was a New Super Mario Bros. Wii Bundle.

Ofcourse i'm not ! They even admitted that they DON'T have the numbers of all sales and that it is speculation on their part how much was sold. Nope Halo 3 def sold 2-3 million more copies than smash bros brawl so if they're not sure of those sales then they should have included Halo 3 seeing they're not even sure entirely of all sales.

OK, where did they say they "don't have the numbers of all sales and that it's speculation on their part how much was sold"?

And besides, this 3 million more copies difference you say is on the worldwide sales, not US. Halo 3 sold more than 14 million copies WORLDWIDE.

That's the thing, if they really weren't aware of the numbers of sales, this top ten would be different, but Halo 3 still wouldn't be on it.

Yeah and smash only sold 12 million something WORLDWIDE. Pretty sure that won't be more in the states seeing Halo was kinda a title that was super big in the states. Also Microsoft being one of those developers that don't usually show digital sales so that number will probably be even higher and not gonna search it, there's a thing called google. Even Reviewtechusa did a whole video about it that the numbers are mostly speculation because of the statement they made. Yes it would be on it, that's your opinion not mine that it wouldn't be. I still call it an inaccurate list full of speculation

Wii Fit is 1st because it's not bundled and many "obese losers" bought it to try and lose weight? I'd be surprised if that didn't quite work out the way they expected after all. Where else does the appeal come from? :rofl2:

And in general, this list is meaningless because Nintendo is one of the only (relevant) exclusive game developers anyway. Nearly all other good games are cross-platform.

Wii Sports beat by Wii Sports Resort? That sounds so fake. Wii Sports was super popular, most people don't know it had this successor. I can't believe this is true.

No, far from it, Wii Sports is actually the best-selling exclusive game of all time. But the catch is that, besides the japanese and korean releases, it came bundled with the console worldwide. So, it seems that Wii Sports Resort's standalone sales were higher than it's predecessor, as the list does not includes bundles sales.

It makes me sad that a game like Wii Play is one of the most purchased games ever.
Not surprising, it's a $10 game only bundled with a new Wiimote (so the real question is: why is it in this ranking?)

That was the WiiU one - and yes, science said it was one of the best!
