Kingdom Hearts III has gone gold, development is officially complete

kh3.png

After five years, and multiple delays since its first reveal at E3 2013, Square Enix has proudly announced that development has officially wrapped up on Kingdom Hearts III. In just over two months, the game will launch on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, on January 29, 2019. For those that enjoy other Square Enix properties, this also means that Tetsuya Nomura can also fully dedicate his time to the Final Fantasy VII remake as well. A short cinematic trailer was shown off in order to celebrate the occasion.

How the fuck does something go gold when it hasn't even been released yet? I don't understand that at all.
A game has to "go gold" a month or two in advanced of its release date so that there's enough time to print discs for physical copies and get them shipped around the world. This is the state of the game when it's 100% playable beginning to end at a level of quality good enough for sale. From here, part of the team will continue working on bugfixes while the rest move on to other projects.

Not really. They probably went gold, but they had so much bugs so that huge day one patches were needed.
This game will also have a day one patch. Just as any game. Nowadays it's just the best option for every AAA game.

Going Gold is when the game is fully playable and deemed fit for sale. As I just explained, it's when discs can be printed and pushed to retail, and that needs to happen before a game launches. Teams still continue working on bugfixes past that, and that's what day-1 patches are. The build of the game you get on a disc is 1-2 months old. No game is 100% bug free, and ideally, a game goes Gold when all the major bugs are handled, and the day-1 patch can address minor bugs.

As far as Bethesda goes, their launcher and engine are pretty dated, meaning it's likely that pretty small changes require redownloading large chunks of data, and that's the large patches you see for Fallout 76. If other companies have large patches, it means they're redownloading big chunks of the game that have been updated with bug fixes. Sometimes this is necessary to fix certain bugs.

Wow its final done. Now we can get the rest of the story and still be confused! This will be a long 2-3 month wait. I am so ready for this!:grog: square Enix for keeping us on the edge.

I've just started the first one. I'm like an hour and a half in and it already seems like a blast. It makes me *almost* want a PS4 but I think I'll wait to see if it maybe comes to PC

"Finished developing", yeah right. Wait until the day one update because they were still working on it. Just say gone gold and leave it at that.

Wow, so why bother with QA testing when you can half-ass a game, release it and then make people pay for DLC?
