Just got a used Wii. Firmware version is 4.3U. When I connected it to my wifi it said there was a system update, but I didn't apply it for fear of breaking the ability to mod it.

I tried running Letterbomb following the instructions exactly, with 3 different SD cards. It gets to the "scam warning" screen on all three, but never prompts me to press 1 to continue.

A few other things:
1. I am using a regular Wiimote (no motion plus)
2. All my SD cards are SDHC (4GB, 4GB micro with adapter, 16GB), but as I understand it, Letterbomb should still work with those.
3. I do not have the internet channel on my Wii. If I go to the shop channel it says I can't access it until I run a system update.
4. I have no idea if the Wii was modded by a previous owner. But there are no channels other than the default ones (weather, shop, etc).

What should I do? Is there some trick to making the Letterbomb exploit work? Is it safe to update my firmware?

I'm at work right now but this evening I'm going to try two things. First, I just realized there was a game disc in the Wii this whole time, so I'm going to eject it before trying again. No idea if that makes a difference but it's worth a shot. Second, I'm going to move the Wii to a part of my house with better wifi reception and try again. I will also consider trying the str2hax hack and if nothing else works, I guess I'll have to try running the system update again. It looks like the shop channel won't be gone until a few more months from now so I still have a chance to download the browser and run a browser-based exploit, but only after I've run a system update.

4.3U is the latest version so no need to update. Str2hax should work.

I had trouble 1st time I did a Wii using SDXC w/Adapter. Make sure it is formatted Fat32.

Even if it was SoftMod already, LetterBomb would still bring up BootMii menu.

TLDR: Try running modmii's hackmii solutions wizard, for real it might fix this issue
...
I think maybe installing a clean IOS58 (the top IOS prioritized by the hackmii installer) might fix the issue. Whatever IOS is being used to run the installer is getting hung up somewhere somehow, it could be a patched IOS from some legacy cioscorp garbage hacks. So modmii will save a boot.elf for mmm to the root of the SD card instead of the hackmii installer so that it will be launched by letterbomb (or "wilbrand" which is basically the same thing by @giantpune, mad respect). This will allow you to install a clean IOS58 even if the wii is a total virgin (you can install officially signed Nintendo IOSs so long as they aren't fakesigned or a lower version number than what's currently installed). After doing that you can even use mmm's app launcher to load the hackmii installer so u don't need to move files on the SD card using a PC before using banner bomb again.

Hey guys thanks for your help, I decided to try running the Wii system update again. After applying it, I tried using Letterbomb again and it worked! I have the homebrew channel and I'm just working on getting a USB loader installed. Guides seem to all be working great.

hey,

Im rather stuck with modding my wii. I have a usb with 5 games on it (all .wbfs on a FAT32 using WiiJ manager), and I spent all day yesterday figuring out and hacking the Wii. The games appear on my GX loader, but as soon as i click start for the game, instead of starting the game it returns me to the HBC home screen. This is currently where I stand and all I have:

1. Got HBC on my Wii (4.3U)
2. added GX loader
3. added d2x cIOS installer
- v10 beta 52
- base 37, slot 250 (I have tried 56 and 57, no luck, I read for beta 52 it should be slot 37)

So close, yet seems so far away.....could it be the wrong slot for the installer? or could it just be the games?

My wbfs files go into wbfs partition. I have my primary partition fat32 for GC and usbLoader gx files.

BTW, did you use the tutorial for your softmod? it would had you use 56 for 249 and 57 for 250.

Hello, Im new here.
So yesterday I followed a video guide that let me hack my wii, to read burned discs. It installed a bunch of stuff, including 2 channels, and even after it installed that the wii was not able to read the burned disks. The disks are not the problem. I used to have a wii already hacked that played them no problem, but it died, now that I have a new one and tried soft-modding it it doesn't work. Anyone that can help? Its a 4.3U gamecube compatible wii.

Newer model wii's come with a disk drive than cannot read backup disks. Good news is, the wii scene has graduated from clumsy and slow backup disks to loading game backups off of a USB hard drive. Check out modmii for step by step easy instructions on how to get it all working

I'm in the same situation as you. I can't get past the "scam" screen. I formated my SDHC card to only 2GB and I'm still stuck at the same screen. I tried doing an Wii update like you tried, but I'm stuck at testing connection :(

This will fix your hack mii installer issues!

Edit: technically doing an official update then resoftmodding your wii should also get this fixed, but official Nintendo updates can 003 brick region changed Korean wii's (unless that wii was previous modded by ModMii, then it would have extra protection to save it already installed, that is a patched ios60 installed to slot 80). So basically just use modmii because there are lot of people who have wii's that don't even know that at some point or another they used to be Korean, you'd be surprised how many times I hear about 003 bricks caused this way.

Hi! I started hacking my RVL-001 Wii a week ago helped by Self's guide on reddit (don't know if I should link it) dated January 2018. I didn't knew of ModMii until today. I think ModMii's pack is more updated, but I don't now how to overwrite ModMii's hack over the one present: although ModMii's wizard says at the beginning it works on pre-modded Wiis, I'm insecure of rewriting the previous mod without knowledge of which steps should be re-done and which shouldn't.
I tried to compare both guides (also searching in this thread if anyone has had my problem, but no matches) and for instance, I think reinstalling the Homebrew Channel (current version 1.1.2 on IOS58 v24.31) is not needed, but :
  • I don't find the "IOS236 Installer v5 MOD" nor recall patching it,
  • I installed a Priiloader specific for WiiMotionPlus not present in ModMii's generated guide,
  • and when loading MultiModManager (v13.4) it is loaded in IOS58 v6175 (instead of the recommended IOS236)...
I do have the NAND backed up and many old Nintendo systems emulators installers and installed from the SD as well as a Media Center in case I want to play some movies on DVD...

So please, what should I do now? Is it harmless in my situation to follow ModMii's indications from the beginning? Or I should simply follow the USB-loader SetUp?

Thank you in advance and please excuse my noobness

Maybe stupid question but that's what this thread's for ...

I just recently updated the hack on my Wii. Ran it through ModMii, everything went fine, everything works fine.

A couple nights ago, I noticed in Wii settings that I'm still on FW version 4.1 U for some reason. I was pretty sure I had updated it to 4.3, but sure enough it says I'm on 4.1.

Should I update it to 4.3, or leave it alone? Is there any risk to my 'stuff' if I update?

No point in updating u don't get anything extra out of it. An update will just remove some of your mods and force u to repeat the steps using ModMii. If seeing 4.3 in the settings menu gives u warm and fuzzies inside then u can update to 4.3 using ModMii, or update officially from Nintendo then rehack your wii using ModMii again (main wizard again or u can use modmii's syscheck updater wizard)

Hello all!

Ok, so I have modded my Wii successfully for the first time following the guide called "Beginner's Wii Hacking Guide 2015 - USB Loading, Wiiware/VC Vackups, GameCube Backups" by Subscriber0101.

I realized after doing it and digging further that there are more up-to-date guides and/or softwares to do it, like modmii, but still it taught me the bases...

Now I want to know which are the most current/easy/versatile loaders for loading Gamecube .iso and Wii .wbfs files?

I am currently using Nintendont and USB Loader GX as suggested by the guide, but I heard that Configurable USB Loader was pretty neat...

Also, am I gonna be fine with this "not-up-to-date" hack, or should I just re-hack it to the latest modmii stuff? I mean, what more will I gain to be more up-to-date? Or what will I loose to be on this old hack?

I'm a bit lazy, I don't feel like restarting over lol :)

I doubt anyone will go through an old obsolete guide to determine what it does differently versus ModMii, especially when you didn't link to it.

You can run a Syscheck and report the results here, or you can load your syscheck log using ModMii and it will analyze it and tell you what changes would need to be made for it to conform to a standard ModMii style installation
