Ah, so just to make sure I understand. Is the update pending to 5.1.0 on mine, or was the update simply pending when I got it, and it applied the pending update to 5.1?
If there is a pending system update, it won't display the firmware. It would say a system update is pending or something like that. If you can see the firmware number, then there is no pending system update.

Some noob questions:
1. I'm on firmware 4.1.0 right now, should I upgrade to 6.1.0 using the method that doesn't burn fuses?
2. Is there a way to launch CFW without a PC to inject hekate payload?
3. How can I get banned?

  1. No games require firmware 6.1 yet and 5.1 is still the best firmware for CFW, but if you update without burning fuses, you can always downgrade at any time
  2. If you mean without a PC, then you can use your phone, an external modchip, or an internal trinket. If you mean without a payload, then you are out of luck
  3. By using CFW/homebrew

Thanks! So if I launch CFW I can already get banned? Is it just luck?

Just try restoring the NAND with Hekate and it'll automatically create the folder structure for you. And since the SD card has to be in exFAT (no, you cannot restore the NAND in parts), you should format the SD card before running Hekate to create the folder structure.

Ok so i successfully restored my 5.1.0 backup. Now im trying to get back to cfw. I get into autorcm mode and boot up the renix payload but it just shows the splash screen and then goes to a black screen and stays there until i reboot it back into stock. Any help? I reformatted my card to exfat in order to restore the nand and then i went to the sd site and added all the files from there. Dont know what im doing wrong.

Did your Switch have exFAT support before you backed up the NAND? Because if not, you will be unable to load CFW as long as the SD card is exFAT.

Hello,
Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question but I want to keep my 2.1.0 OFW in case of untethered crack coming and I also want to play online with latest firmware games like smash bros, is it actually possible ? (Like with SX emunand or something like that, I'm not very familiar with all this stuff)

Thank you !

You are correct in your statement about his current situation. But, he can patch in the exFAT support directly to the loader. This is how mine is set up.

You can't really play online games safely without updating SysNAND. Playing online with EmuNAND presents a ban risk, especially with TX's implementation that runs from the NAND so it is detectable. And if you try to update your firmware without burning fuses, so you can return to 2.1 firmware in the future, you still run the risk of being banned by Nintendo since you can't do that without hacking.

Isn't that the purpose of my question? And in the event that I am wrong in my assumption, what do you believe the problem to be after he restored his NAND?

-I have an untouched Switch on 3.0.0 that I'd like to leave in case of a future untethered exploit.
-I have a Pokemon Switch bundle coming next week which I'm assuming will be patched. I'll use this as my clean system to go online with.

Question: Can I transfer my current saves on the untouched 3.0.0 Switch somehow without updating to latest firmware to the new PokemonSwitch console? I'm only interested in save editing, is that possible on a patched Switch somehow?

(If there's a better way of utilizing the two consoles I'm open to suggestions) Thanks!

If the console is patched, it cannot use homebrew or accept RCM payloads hence why they are referred to as "patched". The only other feasible way is by having both consoles use the same Nintendo Account and transfer saves via the cloud service but that involves updating your 3.0 Switch to the latest firmware.
Well you ended your post with "Because if not, you will be unable to load CFW as long as the SD card is exFAT."

Which isn't the case, he can either patch the switch directly or patch the loader.

The "why" he is in the current state he is in isn't really relevant, he only needs the solution.
This is now my opinion, but spoonfeeding people's solutions is not going to do you nor the other person any good. Instead you get a person who will latch onto you or others for answers to questions rather than learning the answers themselves. Instead of finding the root cause to a problem, you merely treat the symptoms which is not how you find a solution. Because if you only treat the symptoms, those treatments themselves will cause problems down the road. For example, you just linked the user to a tutorial that only patches exFAT on via a firmware-specific kip. So if that user were to ever change firmware, his console will be bricked. I would know from troubleshooting the various users who were using Darth Meteos' Stash when it had this kip packaged in. Apart from the fact that the file itself cannot be shared, it brought more trouble than relief hence the removal of it (as well as the stash itself).

I stand corrected. I didn't use a packaged kip, I created one from my switch using this method, though that would not solve it being firmware specific.

So this begs two questions.

1) If I wanted to upgrade firmware, would the workaround be to upgrade using a fat32 formatted card, then recreate the kip from my switch on the new firmware before trying to use exFAT again?

2) Does it only brick the console if it's patched into the switch itself and not just the loader?

My apologies for being brash, I'm showing my ignorance I suppose. I've been hacking consoles for years now, but I am still learning the switch.

If the process I'm using is just outdated and dangerous, what process would you suggest to maintain exFAT support?

I really don't want to use official methods because I don't want to upgrade firmware.

  1. Honestly, it would just be easier to use the homebrew application ChoiDujourNX to apply the exFAT patch to the firmware it installs. That way, you don't have to deal with firmware-specific kips and as long as you always choose the exFAT option when installing a firmware, you never lose out on exFAT support.
  2. Its more like a bootloop, similar to AutoRCM, than an actual brick. Since the kip is a temporary patch that is applied when you load CFW, if you load the console without the kip such as OFW, it will be fine.

Roger that. I knew about ChoiDunjourNX, but I did not know it could apply the exFAT patch when it installed the firmware. Thanks for the education.

I am new to the Switch hacking scene.
So there is no chance at all to get banned if I don't go online while hacked?
I plan on getting a retail copy of Lets Go Pikachu which I will also use online, but hack it for other games.
I shouldn't run into any trouble if I restore my hekate backup before going online?

I remember the 5.0 brick fest with third party docks.

Whats the situation now? Was it the firmware version? Are third party dock usable now? Im on 6.1

Nope, you should be fine but you also have to keep in mind that you will have to make new NAND backups every time you want to return to using CFW/homebrew since you cannot restore the same NAND more than once.

That wasn't a firmware problem, that was a hardware issue due to Nintendo not complying with USB standards on their USB ports and third-party companies expecting Nintendo to follow basic standards.
