Hacking Frying the Switch

So, in following this guide to make a paperclip jig, it states "Make sure you DO NOT contact pad 4 when the console is booting/on. Pad 4 provides power to the Joycons and will fry your console if you bridge to it." Now, I may have done this, what exactly is fried? And if I have a second switch, can I fix this issue?

Can you still boot?
And now, if you fry it (probably some power delivery IC) you can't fix it with second switch.

No, it will not boot any more.

By fix it with a second Switch, I mean to try and swap parts, if possible.

Rather hack the second switch. Hold power button for 12+ seconds and try to boot (normally)
Otherwise, remove the battery, hold the power button for 12+ seconds and try to boot.

It almost makes me want to cry when I hear that someone let the magic smoke out of their game system. Keep us posted if you are able to get it going again.

Maybe it's a fuse that can be replaced (like a normal physical fuse, not the teeny ones in the SOC for anti-upgrade bullshit)? Fingers crossed someone can give you helpful answers.

For anyone else reading this who uses paperclips and foil and other dumb shit, this one big reason why people keep saying to use a proper jig.

I'm pretty sure whenever 3rd party docks were "frying" switches it was fixable with a new power IC. That's some tiny-solder man type work to replace but if you know what you're doing it can be done probably fairly cheap too

I have never condoned of the paperclip or tinfoil methods to boot rcm. Get a quality made jig or use autorcm

If you connect the power rail to one of the data lines you will fry whatever connects to them. This would require essentially a professional replacement of the chip that drives the rail because I can guarantee there are no fuses inside the switch to prevent this sort of thing.

I would assume if its completely dead that would mean its the Tegra that has died or the power chip.

Check out ifixit for info but this is probably a lost cause if you can't even do the rcm hack properly.

would putting in the jig upside down accidnetally fry the switch?

I follwed instructions via youtube on how to put homebrew on my switch. I even bought a quality jig. after i inserted the jig and started tegra (pressed volume up and power) my switch wouldnt turn on and the RCM was still RED. And now it wont turn on at all what happened?

Putting the jig upside down will do nothing. So pretty harmless. It looks like you properly entered RCM. It is just not recognized properly by TegraRCMgui (I assume). Try a different USB port on your PC, or a different USB-C cable. As for your Switch not turning on, press and hold the Power button for 20 seconds to really turn it off, then turn it on normally or go back to try entering RCM (jig inserted, Hold Volume UP and tap Power button).

When I was modding my joycon (soldering a Reed switch to it) I accidentally shortcircuited it's motherboard while trying to remove the battery cable with a metallic twizzler. After some research I found out that there were some fuses (0 ohm resistors) that were burned.
Since the joycon has this kind of failsafe we can assume that the main board will have something of the same type there.
In my case I just made a blob of lead free solder to make a bridge between the 2 sides of if.
Just try to find the mainboard fuses and check if they are open, your switch should easily fixable if that's the case

Could be anything from just a single fuse if you're lucky or the power management chip.
All components are available so usually it can be repaired.
