Hey, I just bought two Wii’s and I want to backup the untouched/virgin NAND of them before doing any kind of softmod or similar hack! Is this possible?

I read that I maybe could do this through ModMii choosing the Abstinence Wizard with Sneek.. is this correct?

Best regards

I don't think it is possible (at least on 3.3+, and obviously without using a hardware nand programmer), because IOS does not give programs free access to the NAND

If you have an old Wii that can install BootMii in boot2, you could install that only (it's fully reversible without traces, I think, unlike installing a title) and create a backup from there

Else you will need to install at least something (the Homebrew Channel, which has AHBPROT enabled, so that compatible homebrew can bypass the IOS and its permissions system); the HackMii Installer itself obviously uses some exploit to get the ability to install channels, but the installer itself is closed source and the exploit it uses is still undocumented...

Thanks a lot for getting back to me that quickly! So based on what you wrote, the closest to ‘untouched’ I can get my NAND backup would be to reformat my Wii through the normal Wii menu and then do a NAND backup through BootMii?

My Wii’s are newer though.. they’re black with GameCube controller ports so they must be either RVL-CPU-40 or 50 or 60.
Is there something I should keep in mind using BootMii then?
I’m just curious.. would I brick my Wii if I reformat through the Wii menu after running wilbert/banner bomb?

So anyway, I already had the Homebrew channel. I just need to update it, anyone got the last version? Or it really has not been updated in eight years?

Well, since you indirectly said you can't have Bootmii in boot2 (since it's a black model, and the last boot2-moddable models were made in mid 2008), the shortest way would be: entrypoint > Hackmii Installer > HBC + BootMii IOS > open HBC > go to BootMii > backup

A factory reset isn't very helpful for cleanliness, since I think it leaves channel tickets installed, and it certainly doesn't revert modifications to system titles (like IOS), and every installed channel gets permanently recorded into a file called uid.sys (used to separate files of different applications: if you know Unix permissions, the idea is almost the same)

For brick recovery, Bootmii IOS isn't very helpful, since you would need Priiloader installed (and working!) to access it in the case of a brick, and a Gamecube controller to restore a backup - but if you can use Priiloader you have access to much more flexible recovery options!
(The BootMii backup can be used with a hardware programmer, but in these years when you can buy an used Wii for 20 € - what you could make by selling the broken one for parts, it just doesn't pay no matter how strongly you think e-waste is a problem...! And of course the backup is indirectly useful if you ever need your nand encryption keys for use with PC software, or if you legally want to emulate an exact copy of your own Wii)

would I brick my Wii if I reformat through the Wii menu after running wilbert/banner bomb?
No: those exploits, by themselves, don't modify your console at all

The only "damage" that can be caused by a factory reset is, if you have Priiloader installed, you will lose access to the Wii Menu itself (because Priiloader renames the Wii Menu and replaces it, so the original Wii Menu is not seen as a critical system file anymore) - but since Priiloader continues to work, as said above it's quite easy to fix the problem :)

The last "official" HBC (titleid LULZ, closed source, with "DRM" like the infamous upside down screen, distributed via HackMii installer so that it can be installed on an unmodded Wii with their own proprietary exploit) is still 1.1.2

Then, a DRM-free open source version was published by Marcan, and is available in .wad format: https://gbatemp.net/threads/v-wii-homebrew-channel-open-sourced.450288/page-4#post-6871034
It has titleid OHBC and is version 1.1.3 (and has a video mode fix, although it's mainly of interest to Vwii users)

From there, forks and mods happened: one of the most famous is Fix94's 1.1.4 (https://github.com/FIX94/hbc/releases) although that's too mainly aimed at WiiU owners, and someone reported stability problems

Myself, I use the 1.1.3 I linked above...

So 1.1.3 is it since I have a Wii, not a Wii U. Thank you.

Any other channel I should have to run games, and how one does run Wiiware games?

You do not need any "channels" to run Wii disc backups (an USB loader of your choice, and appropriate CIOS such as d2x v8, v10-52, or v10-53 - newer is not necessarily better!);
Gamecube backups are even simpler, you just need Nintendont (and an updated copy of IOS58, which you likely have if your Wii is on the last official update and you never meddled with that IOS)
If you want, you could install forwarder channels (that run a homebrew, like an USB loader, directly from the Wii Menu), but they are optional

WiiWare and installable channels in general, you install them to internal storage (using .wad files and a wad manager, such as "Wii Mod Lite" or "Some YAWMM Mod"); alternatively you could spend some time figuring out how to setup and run an emunand (which would allow you to run them directly from SD or USB, although with reduced compatibility)

Oh, and before you start installing channels from questionable sources, you should install Priiloader, which would allow you to fix a "banner brick" (the condition where a channel with a bad icon prevents the Wii Menu from starting) and some more things!

Try story again: Installed Letterbomb (went through steps for homebrew and boot=Nand only). I did nand 56=249 and 57=250 BEFORE 236. Everything worked fine except USB Loader GX WAD (ask to use 249 or ???). I tried 56 and 57 again (no, I did not uninstall 1st). Now I start a game, controller needs reset (on Fortune street) and freezes on (just dance 2018) <-- 2 games I tried. I uninstall bootmii.. still same. I think it is time I quit thinking for myself and get help :)

Hello,

@ISO-Man :

reinstall your cios correctly with this version ==> cios d2x v10 beta 52

and you put like this for the cios ==> cios 249 base 56, cios 250 base 57 and cios 251 base 58.

then update your loader ==>https://sourceforge.net/projects/usbloadergx/

Imperative install Bootmii

Then test again.

Everything working as before, but still can't get the USB Loader GX WAD (installed under 249) to work.. still states USB not found and ask if I want to retry under 249 or 236 (if I recall).

Wait, if the titleid is OHBC, would that mess up bootmii's homebrew channel feature? BC I assume my bootmii loads titleid LULZ since that's what my current homebrew channel installation is (1.1.2)?
