So Im about to get a switch and I want to play Pokemon Let's go Pikachu online but I also want to install a CFW so I can dump smash and upload it to the masses when we get it in our shipment of games at GameStop. Do I update my system before I make a nand backup? Is it possible to use the CFW then restore my OFW to play pokemon online without being banned? Also is there a US retailer for the atmosphere dongle or one that is better?
Sorry if this has been asked a thousand times.

If you want, you can update. Do a backup. Stay offline and have fun. If you ever want to go online again, restore the backup.
10-4 good buddy, so basically keep it separate. Should I get two microSD cards? One for OFW and one for CFW?
Also whats the best thing to do to keep the cfw offline besides enabling Airplane Mode, I wanna be supper safe just at least until I can get another Switch xD

You don't have to use 2 sd cards. And use 90dns (google it)

So just to confirm. You think ill be safe long as I use my backed up OFW for online only, then using the CFW with airplane mode and 90dns to play and dump backups?

Yeah, what I reccomend doing is deleting your internet connection settings, go into airplane mode. Powering off your switch and then making a nand backup, storing the nand backup somewhere safe and label the folder its in as a clean backup. Then continue to use your switch for cfw purposes and such while staying offline and stuff. Then when you want to go back to ofw online make another nand backup, store that somewhere safe in a folder labelling it as a cfw backup, then restore the clean nand backup and go online. Rinse and repeat

Also if the Switch I get is on a lower firmware how should I update it before I make a "legit" backup of my OFW?

On a sidenote, arent the switches in stores nowadays mostly patched? So no cfw if you buy a patched one.

My xp until now, I bougth with 5.1.0 and thought i did backup. After playing around on CFW on 5.1.0 in airplane mode for several weeks (nsp games), I decided to update to 6.1.0 for more compatibility with latest games. I didnt mind burning fuses and stuff because I'm not to bothered using a dongel to boot if necessarily. Sadly I didnt have nand backup, only boot0 and boot1. So i decided to restore factory settings and update to 6.1.0 using OFW. Worked nicely and after that I made a backup and I'm back in airplane mode. Hopefully not flagged for ban.

You most likely are, sadly.

Not much choice other than updating normally, if you update without burning fuses that FW is only good for CFW since it would burn fuses as soon as you tried to boot OFW (plus, it might have CFW traces on it)

Just use cfw on your hackable switch and buy another for OFW. Much simpler and time saving. But if your time is not worth money to you then I guess you can create and restore nand backups.

An important caveat about 90DNS. It will protect you while stationary in a known environment, but due to Nintendo Hotspots it will not completely protect you out in the wild, only airplane mode will do that.

Whats this about burning fuses? Im gonna get the Atmosphere Injector to use the payloads and what not. What can I do to prevent burnt fuses? Also the preowned Switch I'm about to buy has a serial number starting with XAW1002 that shows its hack-able on the chart Ive seen
:D

in short, everytime u upgrade firmware a fuse will be blown to prevent u from downgrading to an older firmware. Only advantage afaik is there might be new hacks possible (maybe without dongle or jig) on older firmwares. For me, as long as the dongle and jig method works I dont mind upgrading without the possibility to downgrade (= blow fuses).

If u want to upgrade to newer firmware without blowing fuses u have to upgrade using choidujour and never boot to OFW. If u boot in OFW it will check the fuses and blow accordingly.

Im a little confused haha, if I upgrade the firmware with choidujour I can never use my OFW backup without it burning my fuses? So it just updates the firmware of the CFW?

Example 1, ure switch system is 5.1.0 OFW atm. U make a backup (5.1.0) of nand and everything. U upgrade to 6.1.0 with choidujour. Bcs this proces doesnt burn any fuses the switch can still be downgraded to 5.1.0 if needed. Also will it be possible to restore the 5.1.0 backup u made.
In case u boot (accidently) in OFW in 6.1.0 it will check the fuses and burn some if needed to match firmware 6.1.0. After this u cannot downgrade anymore because 5.1.0 wont work with this fuse count. Thats dont want to boot in OFW if u upgraded with choidujour.

Example 2, ure switch is 5.1.0 OFW atm. U upgrade to 6.1.0 using normal OFW. Make backup (6.1.0) of nand and everything. In this case because the upgrade already burned fuses to match 6.1.0 u cannot downgrade. The downside to this is that if (big if imo) there will be a superhack on 5.1.0, u cannot apply it anymore bcs ure stuck at minimum 6.1.0.

In my case, im in example 2.

Ok I understand it a little better now. So to get this right, I cant update the OFW at all or it will burn the fuses? only up date the firmware of the CFW with choidujour?
What would be the advantages of downgrading to 5.1 if im able to keep a back up of it and reload it? Are all the emulators and homebrew like Tinfoil and such usable on 6.1.0 with whatever CFW? Sorry if im not getting this fully lol
I just really need to know the best and safest way to switch between OFW AND CFW so I can play smash online when it comes out, and possibly Pokemon LGP. I plan on using @mattytrog Joy-Con RCM Screw mod mod if that is of any importance.

To be clear:
Fact 1. Upgrading using OFW will burn fuses.
Fact 2. As soon as u boot into OFW it will burn fuses if needed to the booted OFW.
Fact 3. Upgrading using choi will not burn fuses, unless fact 2 happens

Downgrading and restoring a backup of an older firmware is the same. Example, if u have a backup of 5.1.0 and u have the switch in OFW on 6.1.0 u cannot restore the 5.1.0 backup.
