The POKÉMON Detective Pikachu movie featuring the world-famous electric rat and co. just had its first trailer released! POKÉMON Detective Pikachu stars Ryan Reynolds as the voice of the titular character in the first-ever live-action movie based on the Pokémon brand. The movie releases in theaters May 11, 2019.

The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

The movie is directed by Rob Letterman (“Goosebumps,” “Monsters Vs. Aliens”) with the visual effects handled by Moving Picture Company (“Wonder Woman”) and Framestore (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”) while Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute the movie outside of China and Japan.

What are your thoughts about the first trailer?

finally,a movie that isn't based on anime {anime is a disappointment to the whole franchise}
I wouldn't call the anime a disappointment. To older viewers it will inevitably come across as repetitive and boring, but it is aimed at kids, whereas the games for the most part can be for pretty much anyone. I enjoyed the anime as a kid, but I grew out of it just as I did many kids shows and anime, and I think the reason many don't like it is that they've grown out of it and come to realise it's repetitive nature. Could the anime be better? Yes, for sure, just take a look at something like Origins or even Generations, but the fact is that the current anime isn't broken. It still appeals to it's targeted audience, children, and the characters are still appealing to this audience. A lot of people like to hate on Ash, but if you think about it he's actually a really well-made character. He's what every first Pokemon trainer is: inexperienced and ambitious, and this appeals to every new generation that gets into the Pokemon franchise. I know when I was little a friend and I both had gold/silver saves where we called our main character Ash. This was because he was someone we aspired to be. As we learned more and grew, however, we felt cooler naming our characters as ourselves because we knew that we were far stronger than Ash, and around this time we grew out of the anime as well. Even if the anime is nothing more than advertising for the games or cards, it works really well to inspire the younger generation of Pokemon fans.

I do agree though, having a movie not based on the anime is great. The franchise restricting itself to the anime with things like movies and TV up until this point has also confined it's growth as a franchise to a certain extent. It's precisely why we need more things like Generations and Origins, and heck, maybe even this if it goes well, something targeted at long-term fans. I'm glad they decided to step out of their comfort zone and make a movie like this, and I'm sure they knew that this would be met with a heap of controversy too. Hopefully they do it right and that will pave the way for future things like this.

The reason I didn't think it was real, the CG is such trash. I mean, this is 2018 and we can barely scrape up enough cash to make the CG look like a higher-resolution PS2 era cutscene? With Pokemon raking in so much money, you would have expected the most mind-blowing CG money could buy, but instead, we get Jar Jar Binks level crap even my 6-year-old can tell was poorly made. Probably would do better if they went with a little more of a cartoony/stylized look for the Pokemon themselves instead so it wouldn't be so jarring.
I don't think you know what a PS2 game looks like.

Compare the cutscenes for FF12 and tell me this movie's CG looks much better. LOL, I was more exaggerating to prove a point anyway.
I don't get the point of comparing a budget movie's CGI with PS2 games's cutscenes{I mean Its CGI is not that much bad and not every movie needs to have near 1000 animators working on a single scene like on Marvel's Movies}

While you may be correct, even Marvel has some shitty CG stuff. Objectively, the CG suits in Black Panther just look BAD. In a similar way, the original 2003 hulk movie did. In and of itself it doesn't look SO bad, only the animations are so poorly made it keeps you from being able to suspend disbelief, combine that with the massive contrast between a live action actor and you a recipe for disaster visually.

Oh, and the point of comparing is the fact that video game cutscenes are objectively low budget affairs compared to Hollywood movies. If the difference if visual fidelity makes my think, PS2 era cutscene, no es bueno. Especially considering PS2 era was quite some time ago, further illustrating my displeasure with the poor quality unbelievable CG characters. Hope that clears it up some.

Yep,They look so unrealistic because of this..It is like if you overdo something it is not necessary that results will be overwhelming positive too...

I'm sorry? Not too sure I follow. Are you saying they look bad because they have too much money invested in it? I would just hope that with the budgets they get they would be better than vaguely better than what a high schooler could do with Blender. That's all I'm saying'. :P

I mean compare any scene from infinity war with any other Hollywood movie that has some effects for example- battle with Thanos on titan and compare it with the scene of flipping truck in middle of NYC of Dark Knight....Most Likely you will get the feeling about the battle scene that isn't it too much..??{here is where a DC movie nails it that a marvel movie lacks}

Low poly models, blurry, low res textures, limited animation in the hair. Yeah, it looks absolutely nothing like something on the PS2.

(jump to 59 seconds for a good look at a cut-scene)

See, now you are comparing DVD resolution to 1080P or 4k resolution, the CG itself, textures model geometry, all of it is otherwise identical. Not sure why this is the hill you wanna die on here but you aren't even understanding what I said in even the most basic capacity. If you can't get it, then you probably should just move on and ignore it. No one can help you understand a handful of sentences. 59 seconds isn't even a cutscene with CG, that is real-time rendered and it's so intensely obvious it blows my mind you don't understand that I am honestly stumped. CG = Computer Generated = NOT real-time cinematic style imagery. If there are any other basic concepts of deconstructing the English language as it is presented in written form, let me know and I will try to help you out, you seem to need it.

The Animation is fine the CGI just stands out too much you can tell it fake. Not so much Pikachu but Charmander and the Mime Pokemon. They lack some details scales or fur effects to help blend them in. So come on Sing with me "I wanna be the very best"

On the topic of fur, I didn't imagine Jigglypuff being such a furry creature. I remember the pokedex describing it as being a "balloon" type, so I imagined something a bit more rubbery.
