Hello,

I have recently gotten into the Wii modding and loading and have rain into an issue with USB Loader GX not loading my hard drive. First off I would like to state that I have gotten Homebrew on both my Wii U and my vWii following Jack Sorrell's YouTube tutorials. I am wanting to play Wii iso's on my vWii and am having some difficulty getting my hard drive to load on USB Loader GX. When I launch USB Loader GX it opens up and does it's checks but then gets stuck at "Waiting on HDD" and counts down from 20 seconds. In the loader settings the Loader's IOS is set to:58 and the Games IOS is set to:200 (Idk what the significance of the Game's IOS is). Other things I have checked from reading various forum posts is to get a y cable because my hard drive might not be getting enough power, I did hear a constant clicking, so I bought a y cable. I now can 100% hear the hard drive running and the clicking is gone now, but the problem still persists. I have also heard about dx2 from a post that a guy named "Cyan" had commented on and installed that onto the base:57 and slot:249, I have done that and the problem has not been resolved. Keep in mind like I said I am new to this so I could be missing something.

Any help will be much appreciated because I am out of ideas.

Thanks! -Bmc717

Edit: The whole 300GB hard drive I am using is formatted to FAT32, and is set to MBR. I don't have a certain portion formatted to wbfs. Like I said, I have formatted the whole drive to FAT32.

could be the wrong usb slot, also if you have a WiiU usb drive plugged in as well it causes issues.
I have the y cable plugged into the back two ports, and have alternated the two usb ports once. I can go ahead and try that again, but I don't believe it is the issue. Also, I don't use any other hard drive for my WiiU or for anything else, this hard drive I am using is the only one that's hooked up.

Does usbloadergx give a error? Also double check to make sure the app isn't set to hide the games. Can you send a picture of the app open?

Alright I recorded a video of me launching USB Loader GX. Sorry for the poor quality, idk why it looks so bad although I think it is still legible, my phone should definitely record better quality.

If needed I can re-record it.

Issue isn't the app, seems that the y cable is maybe the issue, as is not detecting it. Usually it's due to not enough power, even tough a PC works fine.

This might sound dumb but can you try the front usb ports. And what kind of HDD do you have

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Sorry for the double post, but while it's counting down, try the different ports, once it finally sees it it'll load immediately

Not for sure on the HDD. I work part time at a computer store and picked it up used from there. I think it is a 2.5 inch WD in an enclosure.

Okay it finally loaded the hard drive! Only problem is I have one end of the y connector plugged into a laptop, the other into my wiiu. Also, on the wii u it asked if I wanted to format the hard drive for use? I guess I want to say no to that so it won't wipe the drive?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Also sorry for double post but to add. When I started a game from the HDD it just took me back to the homebrew channelc

Ok, so that's weird that the y cable isn't giving enough power using the WiiU alone... As far as the console going back to the homebrew channel sounds like you might have a CIOs missing... @Cyan do you see anything weird in his report? I'm not familiar enough with what is necessary.

hi,

there are some misunderstanding here.

You posted on the Wii section of the forum, while you are using a WiiU. This was a little confusing at first. I'll move your thread to wiiu.

1. you read me say to use base 57 in slot 249 (good !), but you never read me say "install latest version of cIOS !"
the latest version (r53) is a BETA ! not working !
you need to install on Wii d2x v8 final OR on vWii d2x v10 r52 (NEVER r53)

solution : launch d2x installer for vWii again and overwrite your slot 249 by installing r52 instead of r53, with base57.

2. y-cable is needed on WiiU only.
the Wii has enough power provided by the USB port to power the HDD.
As you have a WiiU, be sure to plug the y-cable in the correct order.
Do not use HUB !
plug the data plug to USB Port 0 (top-back), and the additional power plug of the y-cable anywhere else (USB Port 1, hub if you want, power plug on the wall, laptop, etc.)

3. you setup your USBLoaderGX like this :
loader's IOS : 58 <-- tell the loader to use IOS58. Good
game's IOS : 200 <-- tell the games to use the slot 200 ...... but your slot 200 is empty ! you don't have any cIOS in slot 200. You need to set it to 249, the slot where you installed the custom IOS which will allow you to play games from USB.
if you use 200, it will return to system menu because it can't continue.

4. never accept the format prompt of the WiiU menu, it would delete the entire HDD.
if you want, there's a tool to hide the drive, only the vWii homebrew will see it.
but if you do that, ... only the vWii will see it. Windows will ask to format it too.
so, up to you to not answer yes to the format prompt, either on WiiU, or on Windows.
the tool can hide/unhide, there's a windows tool and a homebrew tool (directly on the console).
look at the WiiU hacking section, Ustealth thread, first post has both tools.

if you hide the vWii drive, you can have both vWii and WiiU HDD plugged at the same time. (plug the WiiU HDD on the front)

I have now replaced with r52 and have set the game ios to 249, but can't get the drive to work again. I plugged into the right slots, one end in the wall, even the laptop again and it wont initialize.

does it work with other homebrew ? wiiflow, HBC, Wiimc, wiixplorer, snes9xgx, etc.?
do you have a Wii to see it if works on other consoles?
another enclosure? (if it's a S/ATA you put in an eclosure yourself), if it's a WD Element (not a random enclosure but an hdd sold with that enclosure), it should work.

No I do not have another wii and have not tried any others yet. I am at school and work for the day and will try to mess with it more later today. I appreciate the help and will get back to you as soon as possible.

Okay, The enclosure is an after market enclosure and the hard drive is a 2.5 inch seagate. I can clearly feel the hard drive running but it isnt "initializing" within USB Loader GX. I have tried WiiFlow and it also doesn't initialize the hard drive. It initialized last night once when plugged into one of the front ports and my laptop, and has worked once today, but it isn't consistent. I reformatted the drive and created a small NTFS partition thinking maybe that was an issue and left 90% of the hard drive formatted in FAT32 32kb clusters, but the one time I got the drive to initialize, my iso that I re-added to the newly partitioned drive didn't pop up. I guess my next step is to test another hard drive laying around at the computer store.

Even tough its spinning doesnt mean its sill getting enough power, you mentioned plugging it int he wall? normally a external power source are used on 3.5" drives, which causes issues. but if its a 2.5" drive I think maybe either the Y Cable you have isnt good enough, or the enclosure is drawing wayyy to much power.

I tried plugging it into a wall with an extension cord due to the fact that I was testing to see if it was not getting enough power. The Y Cable I bought off amazon because it said it was compatible with WiiU's.

Y Cable:https://www.amazon.com/Micro-B-Exte...F8&qid=1541709405&sr=8-3&keywords=y+cable+usb

Enclosure:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M08LCX.../SSD Tool Free [UASP Supported] Black(2189U3)

looks pretty standard, did you try it without the Ycable and just use your normal cable. the Orico enclosure i use to have worked fine so i doubt its the enclosure...
