Someone else using the exact same name as another project is just blatantly looking to stir up problems. In the end, it doesn't matter what petty little discourse the devs have, though, because such things most affect the end user, and that's the important part. The random noob that doesn't understand everything off the bat. Having two projects named Tinfoil just gets in the way of people trying to get into the scene, because they're told to use Tinfoil, and then run into two separate projects, three if you count the unforked original.

Months from now, people will try to google what "tinfoil" is for the Switch, and they'll stumble upon questions and discussions that don't lead to the "right" tinfoil, because now there's suddenly another one. It's like if back in the 3DS scene, someone decided to make something else called FBI, and thus baffled everyone not up to date on the 3DS scene.

The new tinfoil in and of itself has nothing wrong with it. Though it is highly, highly preferable, not every project needs to be open source. It's major issue is the name, which, any problems with that appear to be on the way to being resolved through this naming thread. The bickering about "No I own the rights to the name!!" are childish and silly at best.

At the current time, the newer not-adubbz-not-xortroll-tinfoil (do you see how confusing it is?) https://gbatemp.net/threads/tinfoil-title-installer-w-network-and-usb-hd-support.522257/ is locked, to prevent both confusion to newer users, and to prevent a constant source of infighting within the scene, which has instead tried to spill over to this thread. It is not censorship in the slightest, as the post still exists for more savvy users to find and link to, and through contacting a moderator, the developer can freely update the thread.

Good luck to XorTroll on finding a name. Choosing something simple but catchy and memorable should be the ideal goal. Once the two projects are defined and clearly different, perhaps the newer tinfoil that isn't this tinfoil being renamed (ugh) thread can be re-opened for discussion.

Some information about the planned rename:
I won't end the name vote or rename Tinfoil until @blawar sends me a proper proof of the trademark.
Still waiting dude, show us that you really own Tinfoil.

Then lose it the hard way? I am truly fine with either option. I said everything that needs to be said to you this morning.

I was not looking to stir up trouble. The issue is that XorTroll starts projects, releases junk and then abandons them. I am simply preserving the Tinfoil name. You may disagree with my reasoning, however you are being disingenuous and stirring stuff yourself by making that unfounded accusation. We wouldn't even be in this situation had XorTroll actually released something. Months from now, when people google Tinfoil, mine will be the one that shows up because XorTroll still will not have released anything substantial.

GBATemp is free to censor whatever it wishes, its a private forum. I have tried to shy away from commenting on the blatant censorship because its futile. I do not need to advertise on GBATemp, if you dont want me updating your users on the software that is your right. And you reasoning seems reasonable, even if I do not agree with it. What your reasoning does not explain, is why linuxarea added in comments "Locked for suspicious activity", which is blatantly false. He locked it because I refused to release source code and he did not like the name.

You win the internet.

You've never thought about what happens in the meantime, until you've eradicated all thought and use of the previous project, right?

What happens, when a user tries to navigate issues between two programs named the same. When people ask for support, and you 've made it so that people have to ask them back "which one".

But one day, google will be yours.

Hi,

I think the releases you're looking for can be found on the github page XorTroll/Tinfoil ("Courtesy of LavaTech").

Kind Regards

So now you're telling me that you ""trademarked"" and literally stole my project's name without any credits to my repo just because you don't like the way I develop?
Simple, gtfo this thread and keep gaining haters, that's the thing you only are useful for.
I wanted to avoid drama and discussions trying to solve this renaming my project, but this won't solve that you're a damn asshole.

I didn't steal any name, you never had it. If you spent as much time trying to defend a name that was never yours, as developing your app, it would be finished by now. We would all be doing quantum installs with XorTroll's installer.

Um, that is just recompiled adubbz code. XorTroll change commit a license change and then call it a release.

How do you know that I didn't work with Tinfoil? Who do you think you are to tell me and the scene how to manage our projects?
As I have said lots of times, I've been developing Tinfoil in private because I damn wanted to.
(yeah, looks like I need to make this bigger for people like you to not ignore it!)

I didn't want to make any commit before it was stable. You may not understand how this works, Mr. CloseSource.

its all vaporware until you actually release something. You could do what Adubbz did, and just commit the code, but not release any binaries.

I do not need to make public commits for people to know I am working on it, I just release? People can use the pre-release or not, that is their option. I guess you're taking a dig at me for not releasing completely bug free apps? Give me a link to some completed software of yours that is bug-free and finished.

Trying to play annoying bystander, knowing everything better: I'm not closely familiar with the details, but if this is a "legalities" or "semantic" battle over who originally coined, or owns the project name -- the point I was trying to make is, that whoever managed to get in those god forsaken sdcard files "bundles" under the tinfoil name - has mindshare, just in terms of the name.

You can now hire a pr facility to try to flip this over, or sue the living heck out of whoever took the name - but the mindshare is still a thing and it will be an issue going forward.

Also - just because now I became curious - why did you make it closed source eventually? ;)

Giving people the chance to vet a program, at least theoretically goes a huge way in terms of creating trust. (I would have said, if TX hadnt sold everyone "piracy in a box for 40 bucks" and hadnt gotten the undeserved success they've gotten. ;) )

Well as simple as this, this ain't a "fuck blawar" thread, this is a name vote.
Now lets avoid drama here, just express your opinion on the poll above.

(looks like 8.7% of the people who voted agree with you, at writing time)

A few people very happy about sharing inside jokes. Or is it heckling...? ;)

This is how you take the wind out of that one - you just spell it out. ;)

Lets all get back to whatever we were doing here... ;)

Tinfoil is the name of the DevMenu alternative, without thinking at shits like trademark or so on (like, there are TWO trademarks registered in the US with the TINFOIL keyword inside, so if they wanted to shut down the project, they would had the possibility). If "tinfoil switch" is searched on Google, all that shows up is @Adubbz / @XorTroll Tinfoil aka NSP installer. @blawar you are in the wrong, copying the name of an existing homebrew.
If tomorrow I want to make my own CFW, or an homebrew, you understand that I cannot name it ReiNX, Atmosphere, and so on? Even if these name are not trademarks, they are already taken. And btw neither searching "tinfoil switch blawar" I can find your tool.
