Finally decided to hack the ol' Switch and I've got a probably very obvious issue.

I'm on 4.1 and would ideally like to stay there. I've got a 128gb SD (exfat, SDXC). I can boot into RCM and send the payload OK, and then the first thing I want to do is back up my NAND.

However, the Switch wants to update in order to use my exfat SD card, and I don't really wanna update. But if I use an SD card formatted to fat, how do I back up my NAND, since if I understand correctly fat SD cards can only write files up to 4gb?

Am I best off just updating on OFW and then backing up my NAND on my exfat card? Are there any problems with ReiNX or other CFW on 6.1.0 FW?

Maybe ChoiDujour is what I need, to update without burning fuses, but I don't know where to get the relevant updates.

What size SD card would you recommend for homebrew/backups?
One that isn't fake. There's no way to really verify this before you purchase it but if the deal is too good to be true, it most likely is no matter how trustworthy the reseller is.

Hekate can backup the NAND using an exFAT formatted SD card regardless if the console itself supports exFAT or not since Hekate is loaded outside of the console. Of course, it also supports partial dumping for FAT32 formatted SD cards and/or SD cards that have less than 29.1 GB of free space.

Huh? I'm wondering how much data the SD card needs to be able to hold in order to make playing backups and using homebrew as painless as possible. As in, how many gigs. I plan on buying it at a store, not ordering one online, so being scammed isn't really a concern.

That's not really a question anyone can answer except yourself. The Switch supports SD cards up to 2 TB in size but I think the largest manufactured SD card is 512 GB. Most homebrew are no larger than a few MB while games vary in size; some are less than a GB while others are up to 20 GB. Although now is a good time to bring up that all CFW only support SD cards that are larger than 4 GB aka SDHC and SDXC, not SDSC.

Hmm if games are so small, then 32 gb should probably be enough? Sorry, I'm very much out of the loop, but do backups need to run from the SD card or is it possible to install them on the Switch and play the games without having the game on the SD card? Does the SD card need to be plugged in at all times in order for the CFW to work?

Games can be installed to the SD card or Switch. The Switch's internal storage is around 26 GB in size. And in case one has an SD card that is too small to fit a game on it, there are ways to install it to the system without fitting it on the SD card such as with network or USB installation using the homebrew application Tinfoil.

Another question: after the fw 6.0. Was installed he wants to update to use the exfat sd.
So I found the thread how to do this offline, but I'm afraid of bricking my switch.
When I update it official now with autorcm on, I will get banned. Is that right? But I don't want to play online or something so it would be ok for me, or are there more consequences?

You guys are awesome thanks for the help!

Is it possible to convert a micro sd exfat to fat 32 without losing the data ? (Obviously I mean using a pc ) I mean, a copy and paste will work? Or are the files in exfat bigger than 4gb?

I'd like to play wirelessly with a friend. I have sx os pro and he is running ReiNX. As I read there are no risk of ban doing that.
Is there any tutorial?

While installing AutoRCM presents a ban risk because it may be detectable by Nintendo, nobody has been banned for having AutoRCM alone. There is also the chance that Nintendo may ban anyone for updating to firmware 6.X offline since there are no cartridges that come with that firmware. Outside of that, as long as you have a full NAND backup (meaning boot0/boot1 as well as eMMC raw GPP), then you can recover from 99.9% of all bricks.

Its possible. Any content installed to the SD card is smaller than 4 GB regardless if it is formatted as exFAT or FAT32. That is because the .NCA files inside any .NSP or .XCI never exceed 4 GB. If the SD card is larger than 32 GB, then you must use a third-party program such as GUIFormat.

Tinfoil doesn't use .json files last time I checked. Unless you're not using the official branch of Tinfoil.

Wireless as in local play or Switch Lan-Play? If its the latter, there is a tool on how to do so here: https://github.com/spacemeowx2/switch-lan-play There is a Discord server you can join that can give you assistance.

The SD File Updater I believe updates all CFW used in the SD Files which includes ReiNX and Atmosphere.

.XCI is a copy of retail cartridge while .NSP is a type of installable content ranging from games to updates/DLC to even homebrew.

While there is no way to spoof firmware, there is a way to update your firmware without burning fuses and that involves using the homebrew application, ChoiDujoruNX. Fuses are designed to prevent downgrades so by changing your firmware without burning them, you can restore your original firmware in case a future exploit is revealed in the future. Bear in mind it will install AutoRCM as a safety measure to prevent fuses from being burnt but AutoRCM is a boon in the right hands.

I have some questions that have probably been asked a billion times but I couldn't find clear answers. I haven't updated my Switch at all since I bought it and I haven't done any CFW stuff yet. I'm on version 3.0.2 right now, and I have an RCM jig that I 3D printed and attached a ripped up micro-SD card pins to. I just want to confirm I understand what I need to do, in terms of firmware version:

1) Follow a tutorial for loading the CFW, still on 3.0.2
2) Update using ChouDujourNX (?)
3) Do I update to 5.1 or 6.1? Do I even have that choice or does it just go to the latest one?

Thanks!
