I mean, when I download media recently released, they're all in x264
However, after a couple of month/year, they get released in x265

I'd just like to know why aren't they immediatly released in x265
It's so much better size-wise
a x265 720p video is lighter than the same video in 480p x264

So, I'd just like to know, why not going directly to x265?

h265 still takes a lot of processing power to encode AFAIK, so groups can get stuff released quicker by releasing it in h264.
Also, lower end hardware can't play it very well (hardware decoding of h265 is still not supported on many devices)
h265 won't be fully adopted as the new standard until the vast majority of devices can play it without issues.

doesn't PLEX re-encode the video?
oh yea youre right^^
Encoding is made in the server (on my computer)
but I can play easily even while watching Plex
And my CPU isn't high end
Intel i7-2600 3.4ghz only

yeah, plex re-encode, thats why i use plex to read h265 stuff on my ps4, but if you try to read them directly it doesnt work (it can range from having sound but no video to file not working at all)

that CPU has plenty enough power to decode h.265 fairly quickly. And I think it also has a dedicated h.264 encoder to quickly encode it on the fly.

Much like audio formats, new video formats rarely completely replace older ones.
x264 remains a better format for encoding dvd video.
Mpg formats are still best for initial rips of analog formats.
When it comes to HD formats, those with the most widespread use (dictated by the hardware used for playback) will always be the most successful.
People still aren't getting the most out of the x265 format to make it much of a serious successor; video quality is equal to x264 with the only improvement being reduced file size... I'll take a larger file size over having to replace my 4k hd Android smart tv anyday.

Hi,
Some people (including me) use Raspberry for Tv Mediacenter (Libreelec, Osmc). Can't decoding x265 with it.
