Okay, I know next to nothing about all this. I'm a noob, so excuse me. But is it possible to actually play this on the Nintendo DS console? I got the impression it was possible at first, but then it seemed I could only do it on a computer through a ROM and Emulator. I can't seem to find directions on how to play it on the directly on the DS if it is possible. Excuse me for my noobliness ;)
You should just need a DS flashcart, then you can load it directly

I think I haven't commented on this thread yet, so I'll do that now to show my support. I completed it, and it was great. You had to do some actual thinking to figure the levels out before you could get all the star coins, the levels got quite difficult. Well I did say this somewhere on youtube, but my personal (non) problem with the game was that I couldn't appreciate all the amazing changes because I didn't remember what was in the old game and what was new, except for a few bosses and one world's physics. I think I would've been a lot more amazed if I played through the original again first. Anyway, I'm super grateful that these kinds of things are still being made for one of my favorite consoles.

Hi swako,

the game crash when i'm trying to enter the Boss's Castle of the World 5.
I'm using the v1.07 with a 2DS on Stargate3DS linker
Here are some screenshots.
Is it the same for others?

thanks in advance

Hey, Skawo, or anyone else who is willing to help. After playing a bit of Newer, I saw in the options that there is rumble support. It may be kinda niche, but since I own a rumble pak I'd really like to utilize this. However, the option to turn it on doesn't change when I insert the rumble pak. I started the DS with both in, plugged it in mid game, took it out put it back in, so I don't know what else to troubleshoot besides posting here, so any help I'd appreciate.
I'm using an R4 Upgrade WiFi card thingy on a DS Lite with an Official Rumble pak that I've tested in Metroid Pinball.

Oh, geez! I'm most of the way through my first playthrough and I forgot that I had planned to dig out my rumble pak.

I can't get it to work with my official DS Rumble Pak either. But I found this thread which reveals that you actually need a Warioware Twisted cart for rumble support. It so happens I have one of those, and it definitely works.

Is this documented anywhere else..? Perhaps there should be a blurb about it on https://newerteam.com/ds/ ?

Both should work; it appears, though, that there must be newer DS (no pun intended) rumble paks that are recognized differently somehow.

Ah, okay. If you don't mind, would you look into a way to fix that? If not, then that's fine. Good day to you.

I don't suppose providing links to http://www.akkit.org/info/gbatek.htm#dscartrumblepak and https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/3_in_1_Expansion_Pack_for_EZ-Flash_V#Rumble would be any help..?

Much thanks for putting in the effort to support rumble in the first place. :)

ETA: I'm using Wood R4. and pressing Y twice when selecting the game brings up a Settings menu, including options for Rumble and GBA link. Unfortunately neither of them help in this case. :-/

ETA2: This Wood R4 setup guide suggests those options are only for use with the 3-in-1.

The GBAtek specification was exactly the one used to detect official DS rumble paks:

Code:
               for (int i = 0; i < 0xFFF; i++)
                   {
                       if (GBA_BUS[i] != 0xFFFD)
                           {
                               return 0;
                           }
                   }

A person who I know has an official Rumble Pak confirmed that it worked, which just means there's some unknown variation of the rumble pak out there, I guess.

The EZFlash 3 in 1 Rumble Pak is supported as well; that's the one I have.

Well, mine's an official NTR-008.

To be sure, I loaded up a Metroid Prime Pinball ROM on my R4, and it definitely works there. (Not nearly as strong as Warioware Twisted, I'd say.) I thought I should try soft-resetting from there (L+R+A+B+Down) and then starting up Newer SMB, but the Rumble Pak remained undetected. I'm out of ideas, except for maybe trying a different flashcart.

It won't be a flashcart issue. Nintendo must have a different way of detecting the rumble, one I cannot really guess on unless I get rumble pak like that.

Here is something you can do to help:

1. Take this xdelta: https://www.dropbox.com/s/m5td8dh3w55hd11/RumbleChecker.xdelta?dl=0
and apply it to a retail US DS NSMBDS Rom (0434 - New Super Mario Bros. (U)(Psyfer))

2. Plug in the rumble pak that's undetected
3. Start the game. It will crash on the titlescreen and spew out some data
4. Give me a screenshot of it.

Happy to help! A couple of the numbers flickered slightly; you can make it out in the screenshot.

Incidentally, I found https://www35.atwiki.jp/hikipuro/pages/62.html , which looks to be a slightly different version of the GBAtek spec.

By the way: it's hardly a major issue, but has anyone else noticed that the sparkles that appear on the map when you spend your Star Coins don't always appear, or appear where they shouldn't?

Hmmm, alright...

Could you test another one?

This should be more conclusive...

Huh, weird. We didn't really change that code...
One thing that could have caused it, I guess, is the World Map angle change, but... If so, that's a rather daunting thing to fix.

The result seems to be largely indistinguishable, I'm afraid.

To be extra thorough, I did the soft-reset on Metroid Prime Pinball and tried again, and I do notice that there seem to be some slight differences.
