TX Announces SX OS v2.2 BETA with Docked USB Drive Support

It's only been a week since Team-Xecuter made the big announcement of SX OS v2.1 with their 'cheat engine'

SXOS22.jpg

And now they are back and on a roll with them adding 'Docked USB Drive Support' and many other nice improvements to their 'cheat engine' and a few bug fixes! :)
How do you do, dear SX OS users?

Today we are back once again with a much anticipated new feature as well as various improvements to existing functionality for SX OS. While this is still labelled as BETA we've had some good success with it internally, we're looking forward to your feedback.

Lets jump into the list of changes!
  • Docked USB drive support!
Yes. You read it right. You can now plug a USB mass storage device into your switch' dock and load XCI or install NSP content from there directly. No longer are you limited by the size of your microSD card when playing the switch from the comfort of your couch, but you can now enjoy TERABYTES of content by using external harddisks and such! The filesystem on the drive needs to be either FAT32 or exFAT, and the directories that are being scanned for content are equal to the ones you'd use on the microSD card.
  • Updates to the cheat system
    • More accurate progress indication during cheat search
People were reporting "freezes" during cheat searches, often times these were just due to impatience and a suboptimal UI from our end. The progress bars are more honest and update more frequently now!
    • Cheat search for exact value requires no initial dump anymore
For 'exact value' searches a big initial dump file on your microSD is not needed, and since this is often the way people start a cheat search we decided to streamline the cheat finder process a bit. You are now prompted with a question whether you want to start an exact value search or arbitrary value search, in case of the former the process will be much faster.
    • Automatically apply/disable cheats upon toggle
The interface for "applying" the cheats was a bit counterintuitive, you now no longer have to press the plus (+) button in order to apply cheats. They are automatically applied/disabled once you toggle them. Disabling cheats now properly works as well, so there's no need for having a dummy cheat any more to work around that limitation.
    • Ability to add cheats using the UI
Identifying memory locations for cheats using just the console is nice, but previously there was no way of adding an actual cheat-code for a location you found to the cheat code library. This has been addressed, and there is now an interface for doing this directly from our menu.
  • Show homebrew NSP icons in TX menu
Some homebrew NSP titles were not displaying their icons properly. This has been investigated and fixed.
  • Fix error 2345-0021 when in docked mode opening TX menu
People who play/cheat in docked mode will like this fix. The frequent crashes that happened when opening the TX menu in docked mode are now a thing of the past!
That's it folks. Enjoy this BETA and let us know what you think. We have more tricks up our sleeves, more rabbits in our tophats. And we only have one gear: FORWARD.

Oooohhhh ho ho ho! I gotta get me a Type-C pendrive now, for when other OS's get this feature. This is sweeeeeet!
@WiiuGold So it definitely works with a type c to USB adapter and you can plug your HDD into that instead of using the dock? that’s really handy if it does also has this been tested and verified not just an img of the net, you know what people can be like to troll.. make you believe it works

I'm trying to use the feature, but whenever I plug my hdd into my switch dock and load it up, it keeps flashing scanning and the other thing multiple times, but never loads.

iirc isn't the inherent max limitation of the switch itself advertised to only support 2 TB? Would be surprised if you could use anything over 2TB as a storage device for the switch. I was going to buy a 3 TB hard drive just for xci files but remembering this I decided to buy a 2TB instead.

It's due to the sdxc memory format it supports up to 2tb. Larger than 2tb sd would be sduc after that.

However the 3ds only supported up to sdhc 32gb fat32. Yet if you take an sdxc card 64gb for example and format it to fat32 instead of exfat. It also works on 3ds.

So probably a play it safe within the official spec. Rather than what may actually work.

Thanks Ok sounds real I would like a proper confirmation of someone here before I go ordering leads and a portable HDD because that is a fantastic method I never use the dock ever so it’s pointless for me. I cannot see why it shouldn’t work the theory behind the setup is the same just all your doing is plugging your switch in to a lead not the dock so yes sounds possible.

I would never use a non powered drive external unless it was a flash drive. It draws 2 much power out of the port wich eventually burns out the port and then you're basically fucked without that single usb c port. I had many ports die over the years by using non external powered USB hubs. You're all warned

Depends on the drive. Some SSD drives only pull .5a.

That's why i said everything besides flash drives. Some are using non flash drives and those can burn out the port. Well they're warned. If they burn out their usb c port well they're fucked since those are a bitch to replace

For me no. 4tb was a no go. But if the storage driver is updated to support gpt disk types at some point it should work. Right now my 4tb drive is set to MBR disk type and a 2tb partition with 1.6tb of unusable space due to the limitations of MBR.
I think mine is western digital , im at work now so , cant check it .
Whays the difference between gpt , and mbr ? And would i have to format the hdd if i want to change one type for the other ?

Not only that issue but one must consider that the HDD is draining the Switch battery as well reducing portable play time.

What I don’t understand is why drawing .5 or 1.0 A out of the USB C port will/can burn it out but putting in 9V 2A or whatever is negotiated with USB PD does not burn the port out.

That was my doubt. Can you copy xci from hdd to sd ???

Currently no, but it wouldn't be hard for NXShell to update with external hard drive support. Or TX should make a file manager built into SXOS. Currently you can install NSP from the hard drive, just have to wait for XCI copy function.

I would like TX to keep external hard drive as READ ONLY. Most people use that hard drive as a backup for their games, you wouldn't want SXOS to corrupt the drive... :nayps3:

i'm just speaking from experience having a couple usb ports burn out by using non powered external hard drives. I'm just warning people not to use a big external hdd that isn't powered since it can burn out the port. I would advise using a flash drive like an SSD or a thumbstick or an external powered case. Bigger non flash drives need more power and it drains 2 much power through the port wich causes it to eventually fail. This only applies to external usage of the switch in handheld mode

Here's an article that outlines the differences. https://www.howtogeek.com/193669/whats-the-difference-between-gpt-and-mbr-when-partitioning-a-drive/ The biggest issue is that no matter how large the drive with MBR only 2tb of space will be usable leaving the rest as allocated space.
Yes you have to format the drive when converting one to another at least with windows. Partition software can sometimes convert MBR to GPT without potential data loss but as far as I know you can't go GPT to MBR without wiping the drive no matter what software you use.
