Telltale Games, developer of the Walking Dead game, reportedly shutting down

Popular game developer Telltale Games is reportedly shutting its doors soon, according to co-founder Kevin Bruner. This follows the large layoff of staff back in November 2017, as well as a lawsuit by the aforementioned co-founder. According to The Verge, more staff were laid off earlier today, leaving only a small team of 25 employees. Additionally, The Verge reports that the dismissed employees did not receive any severance pay.

Kevin Bruner has published a statement on his personal blog, reflecting his sorrow for the employees that lost their jobs.
Today, I’m mostly saddened for the people who are losing their jobs at a studio they love. And I’m also saddened at the loss of a studio that green-lit crazy ideas that no one else would consider. I’m comforted a bit knowing there are now so many new talented people and studios creating games in the evolving narrative genre. While I look forward to those games and new developments, and continuing to contribute, I will always find “A Telltale Game” to have been a unique offering.

Telltale Games most recently released the first episode of The Walking Dead: The Final Season, with the second episode to release next week.

UPDATE: The official Telltale Games Twitter handle has released a statement.

This "sorry for the job havers" thing seems new to me, or at least new for people to talk about like this. For something like this I usually go with quality will win out.

At this point I am not sure if I played any of their non CSI games (and that would only have been because I had nothing else when at a relative's house one time). Always meant to get around to it some day (which might have been part of the problem as I am not the first person I have heard say such a thing).

What I don't get is the toxicity in this thread.
Is this some of this fabled toxicity that I occasionally hear about? I am mightily disappointed. Seemed like normal internet stuff to me.

Jesus, what a flash in the pan developer these guys were. They got a deal to make a game for every major IP on television, and then they die out? I guess interest really fell off after people realized their games were basically multiple choice visual novels that resulted in two or three possible endings.
Are you really a flash in the pan if you make it over a decade? They rose up with Sam & Max in 2006 and pretty consistently released since then.

Maybe now all of them can make what they obviously always wanted to do: Work in the film industry.
I'm not surprised that a company which tries to make adventure games without any notable puzzles dosn't work out.
It neither helped that they just pretended that any of your decision have any effect on the story at all. Yes, it costs alot of money to at least pull of something like with Fate of Atlantis back then or even something like Heavy Rain did, but if you pretend your decision would make any difference at the end then you better make it happen.

What they released in the last years wasn't Point'n'Click-Adventures, it was just I-want-to-be-a-film-Quick-Time-Event trash.
yeah i meant the entire cinematic games genre that are barely games and more like interactive movies.

Really bummed out by this news. They filled a niche in the market that no one else did quite like them. Easily in my top 5 favorite developers.

If they were such a great company, they would have not slammed.....
Theres a difference between being great and biting off more than you can chew. They simply did the latter of the two. They felt the success with the wolf among us and the walking dead and wanted more of it faster.

Supposedly the rest of the final season of the walking dead has been cancelled, it is unknown if episode 2 will even release this week.

Sitting here thinking about it I don't know how that one would play.

If it is set to release this week it is surely all ready to go already. They might not have the juice to advertise it properly (no idea if they have contractual advertising commitments) but a slow play release and some income coming in would be something nice to have.
On the other hand if they want to have something to sell in their insolvency talks and as you are hard pressed to release a game twice in the modern world (don't know if they can get away with that "gold edition" stuff any more) and one you allowed to trickle out would kneecap that*. Some might also consider it a finishing on a cliffhanger as well.

*I would love to see the data on that if it did happen.

Good riddance. I hate their incomplete games. They're just as bad as those "early access" games.

They had a crap team who thought they were far to high and mighty to take customer complaints serious!
So how many purchased Back to the Future on iOS and could not download Ep 2-5??- this is why the have lack of sales!!!
...I'm glad there going!

What's saddest about this news is that with the recent bout of layoffs, some details have started emerging about how harsh Telltale have been to their staff over the years.
With this quality of story-telling and game-making, one can only wonder how many bright sparks this company has extinguished. Maybe this is a blessing in disguise.

I went looking for it and found a few things concerning the shutdown and working conditions
http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2018/09/22/telltale-games-closure-grim-details/
https://comicbook.com/gaming/2018/09/22/former-telltale-employees-what-it-was-like-working/
https://www.pcgamesn.com/game-workers-unite-statement-telltale-closure (not seen much pro union stuff of late, curious to see what goes here).
Those and everything else seems like some rehashed version of the same handful of twitter witterings though.

Sucks for them certainly and another reason I am glad I don't have to deal with US style employment, live in San Francisco nor work in the game industry but most of that seems like usual game industry/tech industry nonsense of "work lots, there is life used well points in it". I was expecting something a bit juicier, at least on a par with the Quantic Dream stuff the other month ( https://gbatemp.net/threads/studio-...se-involving-toxic-workplace-behavior.512902/ ). Like the stuff about contractors -- as far as I am aware the whole point of the setup is you get to charge more but have to handle your own sick pay, pensions, holidays, in this case I guess unemployment and have no real security in the role beyond what you manage to get in there in negotiations.
