The only way I could see this working, is if people find a way to port the ps2 classics emulator on ps4 to switch. Since I believe switch and ps4 use a lot of the same libraries
That's not even an idea to consider. Pcsx2 is really the only option, even then there is no official or unofficial port to arm chipsets except for the paid dameon ps2 emulator on android that was built with stolen pcsx2 code. If they would release the source code, a proof of concept emulator could be built for the switch but would have low frame rates. Look at Play! on android, very low frame rates. With time & lots of optimization, ps2 emulation on the switch could be possible with playable frame rates, on less demanding games.

The answer is no. Wait for the next Nintendo handheld in five years. Or maybe Sony will get back in the game but the Vita was a ghost town so they can't be trusted. More ambitious yet maybe Microsoft will try a portable Xbox. I'm sure they're prototyping one but who knows if they'll bother.

Highly unlikely. I don´t believe the Switch is powerful enough for full speed PS2 Emulation.

It depends from the ability of the developer... IMHO an expert developer who can write optimized code, is able to write a decent ps2 emulator.
No. There's a reason why the are best/worst case run times for known algorithms, you can't just ignore that with a handwavey "optimization" word. Writing code isn't magic, and even the best devs can't violate the laws of mathematics to make code run faster than a certain upper bound.

Also consider that you'll need a far more mature HW-acceleration codebase to even think about making this happen.

Things are far too early to be thinking about such radical ideas. We only have literally one PS2 emulator on the market, and it's basically hard-coded to pure 32-bit x86 language. Unless a more portable re-write's in order that has room to implement ARM64 support... yeah.

No it wasn't. I enjoy and still play my Vita more than I do my Switch. Sure, it's a JRPG-fest of a console, but that doesn't mean it was a ghost town.

rePatch makes it even better with everyone's efforts to English dub games.

How could they share libraries if they both run different OS and have totally different chip architecture?

This is a complete guess, but I was pointing out to Opengl and Vulcan is supported on both. Modern libraries are supported on both which is how cross play is a thing, etc. I believe they both have support to the same type of tools you would expect on modern consoles (which are similar to pc in more aspects), which is why games can be ported from other platforms to switch reasonably fast. I did not say they are sharing the same OS. I was just guessing that ps2 on ps4 is an example of a ps2 emulator on a modern platform, which means that it has a higher chance of being easier to port than something like pcsx2. I did not say it was possible

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Libraries and os are different things. Opengl can run on a lot of platforms despite them having different os
