EA to host 'Jacksonville Tribute' live stream to raise funds for shooting victims families

Plans have been announced by Electronic Arts (EA) for a live stream event that will be dedicated to raising funds for those affected by the events of the shooting in Jacksonville, FL on August 26.

EA are also making a $1 million USD contribution and will be accepting additional donations from the public.

Electronic Arts via Twitter said:
"The events last weekend in Jacksonville will impact the gaming community forever. We can't begin to understand the pain so many are going through, nor do we pretend to have all the answers that will help us through the healing process.

But as is so often the case, our community inspires us. The way you are coming together, and the outpouring of support for all those affected by this tragedy, is incredibly uplifting. We want to join you.

So today, we're establishing the Jacksonville Tribute.

First, we're making a $1 million contribution to support the victims of last Sunday's events. We're also working to set up a fund where others can contribute alongside our donation, and we will come back very soon with further details. Contributions will go to the victims, including the families of Taylor Robertson, Elijah Clayton, and all those who were affected.

We would also like to help by bringing the gaming community together, and uniting in play, through the Jacksonville Tribute Livestream next Thursday, September 6. We've heard from so many of you that you would like to support the victims, and to show that this horrific event will not define us, but only serve to make our community stronger. We're already working with many of you to help make this happen through the livestream.

We'll share more details very soon.

The live stream is scheduled to take place on September 6th and further details will be announced shortly.

Your reading skills are still impeccable. It also mentions that this is in response to a community outcry wishing to be able to support the victims.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with hosting a charity event, and it's more than most companies would do.

I know some of you idiots aren't intelligent enough to think for yourselves, but in this case jumping on the EA hate wagon makes you look like a complete, ignorant dumbass.
This is a very generous showing, and no one would have bat an eyelash if they did NOTHING. $1million is not in any sense a small amount, and their companies networth does not change that. They're not obligated to donate their entire companies worth for this event.

Get over yourself.
While I agree with nearly everything you said, on a more cynical and deeper level within me, I can only see this as a marketing stunt.

Businesses in the US get write-offs for charity work, which means the 1 million dollars they are "donating" is probably a lot less of a hit due to the tax break they can claim off of it. This doubling as a PR move makes that 1 million dollar stunt (plus probably the 50k tops for organizing and planning) even less of a hit. While 1 million dollars is indeed quite an amount of money, especially for an event that only affected a small amount of people, the way you have phrased it made it seem like EA is actually losing a relatively substantial sum of money. On that note, I just cannot disagree more. With the write-offs, PR move, and good will this is attempting to create, EA will make money off this event when they cash in the small amount of good will they earned on their next game.

Charity this is in fact, but I would question anyone who tries to conflate this with selflessness. Make no mistake, EA will earn money off this event, just not immediately.

A business exists to make money. That, however, does not discredit something positive for the community, and especially those affected. It puts money towards a good cause, and a significant amount too. Regardless of how much it truly sets a company back or not.

Motives really don't matter because at the end of the day, we all know every company just wants more money. But at the same time, a charity and the victims involved also received support as well. Sounds good to me.

Given EA has a very storied history, we should just be happy this news is positive, and not something ridiculously stupid EA did to get itself nominated as Worst Company of the Year again.

this is nice and all, but what does EA need a fund raiser for. They can literally donate millions and it would be pocket change to them.

Because it's a business. If you need to be told what a business is for, and how it functions, there's plenty of resources for you to read.
Also because the community literally asked for a way to help. It has nothing to do with what EA can and cannot do.

It's a bit asinine to start whining about the amount they decided to give, when it easily could have been silence and $0. When people actively question a company, and spit in their faces, it's no wonder so many would rather opt for radio silence rather than this one. People are stupid and ignorant, sometimes a kind gesture gets you more flak than doing nothing at all. Kind of a sad, pathetic world we live in.

The shit some idiots will write here. "Why can't they donate"? "Why can't they donate more?" "This is just PR".

Did YOU donate to the families of the victim? Was it anywhere near that amount? No? Your opinions are as worthless as the non-donation you did then.

One million dollar is still a big amount of money and an extremely generous offer from a company that had no obligations into doing so. Do you want to complain about how little they're donating? Put your money where your mouth is. If you can't do it, then shut up.

this is good EA. Thanks there. Hopefully more people will join your campaign and security is re-enforced at gaming events. This is something that (I think) didn't happen before, because the gaming community was well-behaved. But it only proves that innocent people who just wanted to enjoy a videogame or made a living out of it is not secure from guns.

I hope at least, if the USA government doesn't do shit, then people will build a better community and protects themselves.

its not a pr move, a bunch of people got shot for one of the sh*ttiest game out on the market and they want YOU to pay the compensation

Yeah but they get to take all off the credit obviously. Like they're doing which is good PR because we all know no one reads the stories just the headlines.

The world doesn't work that way. EA is a business and therefore whatever they do is up for public discussion. We are free to say whatever we want just as they are free to do so.

Also unless I missed something major his was certainly not a terrorist attack. The definition of terrorism is the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims. I do not believe this shooter had political aims or was attempting to push toward a political goal so this was not an act of terrorism.

But it is certainly a tragedy .

I just hope theres improved security not only here but at all video game championships in the future
I went to a fortnite gathering at a local gaming landing (not sure what landing means but there's a couple places named like this) and a dude was showing off a butterfly knife and nobody really thought much of it but that shit needs to change, I ain't taking my ass to no convention/concert/cosplay/anywhere really besides walmart and even there security is incompetent.

I do think it's shitty for corporate giant EA to host for donations and release a game about guns in a couple months. They're just trying to stretch all the $$ they can get from this, if you ask me.
