Hacking Is there any way to downgrade 11.5.x Sysnand to 11.2 for Gateway use?

Had to replace a couple of N3DS units that my kids used that got fried, new ones both came with 11.5.x and used NTRboot to get them running with b9s and was trying to boot into GW mode and just get a black screen.

Now realize that sysnand (at least I believe) needs to be 11.2 or lower.

My plans are to downgrade Sysnand to 11.2 and then I should be able to get these GW cards working again I assume.

Do I just need to find a N3DS US 11.2 update zip, and use sysUpdate v0.4.2.cia when booted off Sysnand to downgrade?

Thanks for any help.

Actually I just had an idea where I went wrong, I had setup emunand, but it's 11.5.. based off of Sysnand. So do I just need to make the emunand 11.2, then the GW should boot?

You need to downgrade whichever operating system you plan to run with Gateway's CFW, which will typically be the emunand

The simplest way to downgrade is to find a ctrtransfer image of the desired version and region (Plailect's guide should still have 11.2 ones), then flashing it with Godmode9

Gateway is extrmely outdated if you are trying to play roms just convert the .3ds roms to cia with this and install them using FBI

Honestly you should really just retire that cart and just switch to a free CFW with 11.8 as your sysNAND. Several games have started to have an OFW requirement and the only way to meet that with a Gateway is either spoofing or making a frankenfirm. This is an easily avoidable problem by just simply no longer using your Gateway and moving on to a free CFW.

Thanks! will look into this.

And to everyone else, I WANT to keep using GW. It's such a time saver compared to CFW alone, I don't have to convert anything and wait forever to install, I can switch sd cards very easily between my kids units and it's so quick and easy. I also put CFW on there but have GW boot by default, so I can use some games with DLC if wanted. But GW 99% of the time anyhow.

Just to clarify, Gateway's is a CFW (a commercial and rather technically poor one, though - there's a reason it gets slammed even though as you said it has a few strengths) and (apart from possible bugs in it) there's no reason why you can't use DLC with Gateway

@crimpshrine if you are definite about using Gateway then do the following:
  1. Grab the 9.2 CTR file for your type and region from https://quantumcat1.github.io/9.2.0-ctrtransfer.html
  2. Follow https://3ds.guide/ctrtransfer but do it on your emuNAND instead of sysNAND
  3. Follow https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-using-luma3ds-gateway-on-b9s.431691/
  4. Get a rom of Yoshi's Wooly World and put it on your Gateway card
  5. Boot to the menu (hold L on boot I think) then hold up on the D-pad while selecting boot Gateway mode
  6. Try to play Yoshi, it will update you to 11.2.
  7. Keep hold of you ntrboot card as you will need it to unbrick your console if one of your kids updates it
Personally I think this is way more trouble than just using Luma. You'll be locked out of new games, and your kids can't play any games together (assuming you only have one Gateway card). Plus if they update the console is out of commission until you can fix it, whereas the console is pretty bullet-proof using just Luma.

Just thought I should note. a 9.2.0 ctr transfer doesn't work on a new 2ds xl. Which I guess I shouldn't be surprised. 11.5 works... oddly.

Thanks, did not see this till today. I now have another way starting at 9.2 CTR to get to where I want on emunand if needed.

I wound up finding a 11.2.0-35 CTRTransfer dump, and used Decrypt 9 to transfer that to the Gateway Emunand I was using that was on 11.5, (tried using godmode9 but it always seemed to want to deal with Sysnand, not emunand) I then updated the Emunand that was using 11.2.0-35 using the special gateway firmware for 11.7.0-40. I set the chainloader to boot GW by default and Luma with another key on boot.

Now they are both back to being able to use their GW carts again.

I know, everyone seems to think Luma or some other CFW is better, etc. I don't, not for their primary use. They don't play them together online or against each other. I love just being able to copy a bunch of 3DS files from my computer to the micro sd card, throw it in the GW red card and they are ready to go. It is literally 15x quicker then installing CIA's. I keep a couple micro sd cards around that I swap between their units every few months. Takes 2 seconds to change their selection. We don't even use any of the other GW features.

I appreciate everyone giving me suggestions on how to get back to where I needed to be.

This all came about because the previous N3DS units I had, I had hard modded with micro USB connectors to interface with the MMU or whatever it is called, and one of my kids plugs a USB charger into both and fried them, not going to do that again.. now that I replaced them haha. (I now have an NTRBoot flashcard, which I hope if I ever screw up one of these NAND's is good enough to get me back to being able to flash a backup of the NANDs I took for both of these - So I don't need a hardmod now for these)

FreeShop was a great alternative to GW while it lasted, but now that that's dead, GW is suddenly more relevant again. I always hated having to download CIAs and wait for them to install, but FreeShop made it so convenient that I could just put everything on download with a few button presses, plug my 3DS in the charger and forget about it.
I still use my GW due to how convenient .3ds files are. There will be a frankenfirm for GW 11.8 that will allow you to play online like there have been for past firmwares, and that will most likely be the last firmware update from Nintendo ever.

There used to be a way to use gateway as a plug-in... Is that no longer applicable? I haven't touched my gateway in forever.

EDIT: disregard, just saw the tutorial saying it requires 11.2 which is what TC asked about.

Actually, at this stage, most of us that argued with you over the past 2 years would agree with you as the value proposition has obviously changed. The only real reasons for keeping it were: 1. Ease of use in loading .3ds files quickly, but with newer firmware req's, that's become more hassle than it's worth for most. 2. ctrhttpwn. Eh, at this point? See point #1. 3. Cheats. At this stage, with integrated cheat support for Gateshark on Luma, there's not really any other reasons for using a Gateway unless you're cheat-hunting (where it's still by far the best solution), but that's a pretty niche use case.
