Are CRPGs really this hard?

So I'm playing Divinity enhanced edition, and I'm really having a hard time. I didn't think upgrading four characters would be this hard honestly... I have 1 ecchanter 2 knights, and 1 wizard. I seem to be using potions a lot and also dying alot even if I am level 6? Is this normal for CRPGs? Being on the verge of death even if you don't plan your attacks accordingly?

Some questions I thought of that might illuminate the problem:
  1. What difficulty are you playing at?
  2. Are you letting AI fight for you, or are you controlling all party members?
  3. Do you have a dedicated healer, and do they have high intelligence?
  4. Are both of your knights tanks, or is one a damage dealer?
  5. Are you fighting enemies appropriate for your level?
  6. Are you focusing your attacks on one enemy at a time? And is it the enemy healer/support/ranged?
  7. Are you using buffs BEFORE combat instead of at the start?
  8. Are you allocating balanced stats or are you just pumping them all into one?

1.Classic mode which may be normal mode
2.I'm controlling all party members
3. Yes Both my wizard and ecchanter have high intelligence and can regenerate anyone in the party.
4.both are damage dealers strength slightly higher than my health which would be constitution
5. I'm facing enemies the same level as me now
6. I try to focus on one character but there's so many ranged character that it hurts to even think about it ( I teleport enemies near my echanter and let my knights do the damage even after 2 turns no luck in killing them.
7. I really never honestly really used buff ever... Shame on me
8.Balanced stats

3. If you spread out your abilities too far you limit your effectiveness. It's a good idea for one character to have healing be their main role and then think about possible damage dealing/crowd control, which are both things your wizard and enchanter focus in, respectively.
4. Having no particular character to take the brunt of the damage makes it hard for your healer to keep up.
7. Buffs (and summons, for that matter) can be cast before combat starts, allowing you to essentially get free bonus effects. And if I remember correctly, you can also interact with the environment without starting combat, so long as the oil slick/puddle/whatever doesn't expand into the enemy's ground that they're standing on (and, of course, you remain out of sight).

Of course, everything I've said is just my opinion. People find different things difficult. You could be an expert at Dark Souls yet that one puzzle keeps you stumped for hours. If you're having fun doing what you're doing, and you just can't seem to get by, try lowering the difficulty. Maybe after some time in Explorer mode you find your tactical RPG groove and end up finding it too easy.
