Is anyone else having the issue where the game won't save at all (save block or via the emu?) Every time I load up, it starts from the beginning which obviously defeats the purpose of playing this game. Does anybody know how to get around this>

did you try another emulator?
did you try on PC?
I played that game on PC, with Zsnes, and it worked fine (both sram and save state).

even if sram doesn't work with your rom (because it has an error?), the emulator should allows you to use memory save state.
if it doesn't, it's an emulator bug. (deducted by logic only, I didn't try both combination on wii myself)

You can either make a sram save after saving ingame or make a snapshot which is basically a savestate.

I haven't bothered trying it on PC, only on my Wii. I was hoping for a simple fix, I'll give a snapshot a try (thanks @Dodain47) and if that doesn't work, I'll try ZNES and if that doesn't work, an emulator for PC. I'm new to all this lol I haven't played an emulator on PC in years and as far as Wii, it's only been a few weeks. Total noob here!

zsnes is a pc emulator.
it was just to see if the problem was your ROM or the Wii.
try another ROM dump, maybe yours is bad? I know there are different dump of that game, one with partial translation patch applied to it.

Oh okay, good to know then lol. I can try Googling for another site that has a ROM for it but most anything Mario or Nintendo exclusive has been taken down, are we allowed to request here on another part of the forum if anyone has a ROM they'd be willing to email to me? I know other games on SNES9x work for their saves (Uniracers worked just fine for example), perhaps its just my ROM. I got this particular one from a real life buddy who was able to salvage me all the missing Nintendo games I was looking for, so who knows how long ago or where he downloaded all of these.

That's strange, I've played it using snes9xgx on my Wii years ago and it worked fine. What version of the emulator are you using, are others roms saving? If not did you check your SD to make sure writing isn't disabled for permissions.

I did i a quick test with the US Version of Super Mario RPG on Snes9X GX 4.3.7. Saving works for me. Take a look at the settings folder during the choose game screen. Maybe the auto sram load/save function is disabled?

What you can try is making a *.SAV file yourself. It worked for me.
So, if the file is called "Super Mario RPG (U) [!].smc", go to Notepad and save the file as "Super Mario RPG (U) [!].sav". What you created now is a virtual Save Battery. Place it in the folder where all the saves go and try again.

Holy cow, thanks for the responses everybody lol

@Durelle 4.3.7, and yeah other games seem to be saving just fine. I just took a snapshot file, I'll try that to see if it'll load.

@Dodain47 Both Load and Save are set to SRAM, so I'm thinking it might just be a super old version of the ROM, like post-fixes. Knowing my buddy I got it from he probably downloaded the first available ROM when it was first around, he's old school like that.

@the_randomizer 4.3.7

@Trash_Bandatcoot Nice! If this snapshot attempt doesn't work I'll try that, that's just good to know for future reference. Pretty clever idea! And SNEX9x should theoretically recognize that as a save? (Just so I'm clear, just save a blank Notepad file with the same name as the ROM?)

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

looking at the filename above, if you have "[!]" it means it has been verified as a good dump.
if you have a simple marioRPG.smc, you should try another rom.

He was just giving an example, mine is actually just "Super Mario RPG - Legend of The Seven Stars" with its file extension so I'm not real sure any details about it

Either try 4.3.8 or another version of the ROM.

Is 4.3.8 the version that I saw a thread posted earlier in the week? I can try that, just got my hands on a different ROM to try too.

EDIT: Snapshot trick worked, I used cheats to level Mario to max and sure enough he's got his spells and everything working. Thanks a bunch for all the help guys, I really appreciate the feedback. :grog::grog::grog:

I got hold of another ROM that seems to be working perfectly. Although honestly, this snapshot load is instant, I'm sure a regular save is too but its serving its purpose fairly well. I just have like 20+ now, so I need to figure out how to delete the older ones and keep just the most recent one per-play which I'm assuming if I drop the SD card in my laptop I can see the date and time the save was created, and just do the math from there.
