Even with EE+GS (60GB version) PS2 isn't fully compatible.
Only 97% of the games tested were fully working as of couple months or maybe few weeks ago.
I bought the 60GB version thinking I'd benefit a lot from upscanning massive PS2 libraries, turned out I only played 5 PS2 games on my PS3. (5/17 is close to 30%, so that's not too bad)
Backwards compatibility is still region-locked, and upscan isn't that impressive, PS2 source is still PS2 source.
I personally would have gotten 40GB PS3 for cheap and modded PS2 to play games like A.C.E.3.
