Computer ever harmed by piracy?

Amiga?

But then again, PSX was what really killed that. And commodore sitting with their fingers up their arses.

There is lot of killed consoles like a Gizmondo, Neo Geo X etc... but as usual they're killed by other problems not really by piracy. But in case of Vita that was good idea from Sony, even if console is hacked you must dump games from higher firmware to play it for example on 3.60...3.65. This also will be good for Switch if it also have it implemented, because it was hacked to early like PSP was so some devs may be afraid to enter this kind of platform.

Wii and DS basically printed money, both were easy to pirate for, and many people did. Both got massive third party support, so much so that a lot of it was garbage shovelware.

This discussion again.... I think it's a different generation. More people are concerned with online features and fear of getting banned to even think about "CFW"

Gamecube had piracy too, through modchip or network adapter and PSO exploit. Gamecube still died first. PS2 was supported well into the next generation.

I think it's more complex than many people want to believe.

It's not so much if it will kill the console itself but how studios are affected. I remain convinced that indie studios are affected by piracy (just like music indies are).

Hey look, someone who gets it. but seriously, you're absolutely right. other AAA studios can afford to get their stuff pirated(and I would like to believe that they want you to) but indie developers need every sale to keep the lights on.

What I mean by that they want you to pirate doesn't really apply to games per se, but it does apply to software companies. call it a conspiracy theory, but why do you think Windows is so easy to pirate? they want you stuck on their infrastructure, but this is obviously just tinfoil speculation

...or is it lmao

kill off a Console alone ? No, Chase off Ports/localization/Developers? Yes there were a few cases w/ the PSP where developers saw how rampant piracy was here in the west vs it was in Japan, and felt no desire to localize. as for which ones? i dont recall i think .hack//Link was among one of em,

loosing more and more indie and 3rd party developers is what Will kill the console. from the effects of piracy. in terms of Ease of piracy? post-Cart Generation (by that i mean PS1, PS2, Gamecube Etc. ), when you take ease of installing a modchip, "Free" vs easy vs hard and skill per person. teh systems that was the easiest was the Dreamcast, DS and 3DS (with it down to 100% free if you already had a usable DS Mode flashcard, or older Firmware)

of the CD Based Consoles the dreamcast ... was a Special snowflake in Copy Protection. it was all Disc based. the console didnt have any Checks in place.well i'll rephrase that, it sorta did? but it relied on the GD-ROM Format, and once that was cracked thru those had the Coder's cable and an SDK, and teh advent of games that did come out in MIL-CD Format not helping matters, it was Burn n' Play!
the DS well thats all in the history of it all. and we're seeing the End of the 3DS's Life coming soon. (what was it nintendy said thru 2019/2020? )

the argument of the PS2? it lasted 13 years from birth to death. the first handfull of games w/ launch was in 2000 in the JP/EU/US Regions months apart. and ending in November 2013 with "Fifa 2014 " with just a month later the announcement of the official Discontinuation. granted mid into the PS3's lifespan going strong PS2 game production went dead with spare releases but right up to the end of 2013, Sony *STILL* made PS2 hardware both console format, replacement parts and in the bravia tv's(some models had a built in PS2) the gamecube launched in 2001 and Ended (Died) in 2007 with teh last 3rd party title being Madden 08 and final 1st party being The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess in teh tail end of 2006. so The Gamecube had less accessible piracy, it happened later in the console's lifespan both by exploit and by modchip, yet only was supported for 6 years . the PS2, lasted just a year over twice that, (too lazy to look up the total released games for all regions combined). so the "Gamecube lasted longer" argument falls flat on facts alone.

I've actually seen some cases of piracy BOOSTING both hardware and software sales.
There was a game uploaded/leaked to a torrent site, by the devs themselves, and so a lot of people bought multiple copies to show gratitude, or so their friends could play too.

And god only knows how many PSPs have been sold BECAUSE of piracy/ emulation. I've personally owned 10+ PSPs over the course of the years, and I did legitimately purchase games, even on CFW... I still buy games to this day on systems, even if I have them modded, because I am trying to amass a physical collection to decor my place up a bit.

Besides, the numbers are WAY too small in the grand scheme of things to really negatively impact devs.

"Why not buy video games consoles made with raw materials, which are extracted and processed with the exploit of human blood and labor in third world countries with low wage labours and underemployment regimes. But piracy? How could someone do such a horrible crime, the benevolent big companies, monopolies and ogiopolies can't tolerate that." That's how i see people advocating against piracy on video games. I don't get what's the big deal about pirating, unless we're talking about indie developers, who truly need one and every sale they make.

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
You should update the 360 to newest dash before RGHing it yes. But not a big deal if you don't, you can install new dash/avatar updates after. It's just easier to do it auto online before, instead manual offline after.

@BigOnYa I wanted to ask you about your experience with seeing south park. Most of the people a bit younger like my younger brother and cousins that are a few younger than me that saw kids found south park funny because of the curse words, kids at school, that seemed like liking the show on a very basic level.

I could not quite have a in depth discussion of the show.

How was it for you? As an adult. What did you find the most interesting part about it. Did you relate to the parents of the kids and their situations. Was it satires, the commentary on society. The references on celebrities' and pop culture.
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I remember seeing the very first episode back in the day, and have watched every episode since. I used to set my VCR to record them even, shows how long ago.
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I just like any comedies really, and cartoons have always been a favorite of mine. Family guy, American Dad, Futurama, Cleveland Show, Simpsons - I like them all.
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
South Park is great cause they always touch on relavent issues going on today, and make something funny out of it.
