Nintendo is showing fangs right now. After pursuing the LoveROMs and LoveRetro sites that hosted ROMs with games from its different consoles, the group asks GitHub to remove an illegally proposed Game Boy Advance emulator.

The emulator in question did not even need to be downloaded since it was hosted on GitHub and could be used directly from an Internet browser. It worked with JavaScript and offered different games, including Advance Wars , Dragon Ball Z , Super Mario Advance , Pokémon Mystery Dungeon or Zelda .

"The files located on the https://jsemu3.github.io/gba/ repository link contain unauthorized copies of Nintendo's video game software in violation of GitHub's law and terms of use , " Nintendo said. . The removal request was made a few days ago and GitHub was executed by removing the files in question.

Is the author of the GitHub repository in danger? Maybe, indeed. Nintendo states, "We are considering taking action on these issues, but we do not include them in this notice." It is possible that the author of the emulator for Game Boy Advance is continued, like the one who proposed the ROM on LoveROMs and LoveRetro.

Could be in danger, probably is. This wasn't just an emulator it seems, he was offering these games with it, ready to play. He can't use the cop out of "this is for games you own, use responsibly" because HE himself was offering the Nintendo Games. ESPECIALLY on a public site like GitHub, he was asking for it.

Yeah, saying "nintendo will go after emulators" is a bit of a stretch. If they embed roms or copyrighted content in there of course those will be taken down.

nintendo is just fucking everything, they don't even sell such games and consoles anymore, it's all old and unsupported, so why stay on it?
just do like sega, don't care about it, and support modding community

Yeah you're just asking for it if you host ROMs. I appreciate people keeping the systems/games alive, but I can't necessarily fault Nintendo for taking action. There are actually laws that state if you don't protect your IP, you abandon it and it falls to public domain. They still do make money off of NES games via the built-in emulators in their consoles.

However, I think there needs to be an overhaul of copyright laws. Anything older than 30 years (movies, games, books, music, etc) falls into public domain - no exceptions. In the vast majority of cases you've made probably 90-100% of all the money you could ever make on those items after 30 years. Corporate greed...

Currently copyrights can reach up to 100 years, so it's about damn time they stopped with the Disney shit and made it a reasonable 30-40 years, enough to make lots of money, but not so long that it's wasted if you don't do anything with it while preventing others from doing fan-stuff with it or forking it to make their own versions based on it! Can you believe Tetris for example is still not open-sourced and public domain after so many years? It's been almost 35 years now...

As for the emulator and stuff, well, he was dumb. ROMs are extremely easy to find, so why even bother hosting them yourself? He could have just made it so that the emulator gets the ROMs through hyperlinks from someone else's host, which is legal. And for the record, emulators are 100% legal, while ROMs and BIOS files (eg: the GBA/NDS bootscreens and OSs) are copyrighted.
