Updating from a legit cartridge is the same process as updating from the Switch; they will both cause the Switch to reboot to try and burn the fuses. If you want to update from a cart as safely as possible, follow quantumboy's procedure.
I guess I misunderstood. I thought he was connecting to the internet to get his system update.

No, you are correct. He is indeed connecting to the Internet and updating. What I'm saying is that updating from a cartridge means you must follow his procedure so you don't burn fuses when your console reboots after it is done installing the update (which its designed to do regardless of where the update came from).
Using this method, how would one go about downgrading back to their old firmware?
Using the restore NAND feature of CTCaer's mod of Hekate (assuming you made a NAND backup prior to updating. You can also follow the linked tutorial on how to update firmware unofficially by replacing the steps that involve loading a specific firmware with your old firmware).

Really just restoring an old 4.1.0 NAND dump is all that's required to go back to the OFW? This is great! Thanks!

Is there any indication that a cart that requires a certain firmware, also contains that firmware? Are there any carts in the wild that contain the 5.1 update?

This thread contains the answer to your first question. As for the second, there doesn't appear to be any so far that contain the 5.1 update (but there is still a way to update to 5.1 unofficially).

I've tried this shortcut method and it works. I believe step 7 means CFW.

I've updated from 4.1 to 5.1 using this method (eFuse burnt 5 - checked using briccmmii) got my exFAT sd card working as well. Selected boot OFW from sx os and updated my official game cart, have not tried updating my xci files .

Not sure about the clamping part but I guess it would work. I held it when it says updating, do note that I almost screwed up and got an orange screen of death (when i selected boot via OFW) during the process of updating I forgot to include boot.dat in my SD card and sx os did not launch.. restarted and all was fine (luckily for me)

You can take this risk if you have SX Pro and don't mind accidentally upgrading to 5.1 I guess.

EDIT: Pls backup your NAND before you attempt anything!

doesn't booting to OFW burn fuses?

GOOD NEWS! I can confirm that you can update through system settings here is what you need to do (and after I Can explain how i "safely tested this before doing it"
0.backup nand and boot and store on pc
1. have your sx dongle plugged in, as well as the rcm jig
2. boot up
3. go to system settings and start update
4. This is key watch closely, as soon as the update is done (or just before) hold VOL +
* you don't need to hold power just vol +
5. the system will auto reboot and due to jig and VOL+ it will go into rcm despite not pressing power (cool right)
6. when sx menu comes up reinstall rcm autoboot
7. boot fcfw

is the point 6 mendatory ? It's not advised to install AutoRCM so I'm wondering.

Not from the SX OS menu. Booting OFW without SX OS will burn fuses.

So as long as we Don't boot in OFW, we won't burn efuses right ?
But how can we do a system upgrade now ? throught SX OS ? can be dangerous and can be banned maybe …
UP : maybe I did not understand your last sentence, you mean if I go to OFW using the SX pro menu, it won't burn efuses right ?

If you boot OFW/CFW in SX OS, you'll be fine. The point is you can't boot the console without SX OS or it will burn the fuses.

thanks for those informations.
So as I do not want to install AutoRCM, I will need to use JIG and SX pro plugged each time I switch on my console right ?

You should now have 5.1 or whatever you just updated to with auto rcm protecting you and fuses intact. I compared my fuses using other payload to be sure.

oh so how I figured this out:
I disabled rcm autoboot, and tested to make sure it wasn't there
then while powered up I put the jib and sx pro widget in, and held power button till power menu came up and I clicked restart and immediately held vol+ and the sx menu booted up, basically proving the power button was not necessary and that all that was needed was vol+ (and pin 10 grounded) at start up or even restart. Not only that I tested this with a charger too. YOu know how when you plug in a powered off switch it turns on, so I tried it with jig and plugged into my computer while holding vol + then with tegra rcm smash loaded a payload and it worked (no power button necessary)

So Vol+ only ? no need to push power button too ?
I'm wondering about the right moment to press the vol+ … did you do a video ?

im confused.. why do you want to avoid burning the efuses? Is this to allow for downgrading later?

I'd assume that going online with a higher firmware and unburnt efuses would tip nintendo off and ban ya.. no?
