Or the ROM chip is 8MB just to prompt for an update, and downloads the entire game digitally. Like a download token. Doesn't seen unfeesable, does it? Bethesda and other companies are starting to pull this bullshit, so it wouldn't surprise me.
That's not the case with most Switch games, unless the creators are cheap and the game exceeds 16GB. Even when that's the case, though, the front cover of the game has a banner that says "An internet connection and microSD card are required to play this game"

Yes. But like I said, Blu-ray drives in computers are a rare occurence, the amount of people without any disk drive at all is higher even.
The only source where disks are still a thing are consoles, PS3, Xbox One and PS4 are the only ones with Bluray drives.

And it doesn't take away that downloading is often faster than reading and decompressing it from disk, it's especially painful with a HDD too as it can't write it off as a single chunk and will suffer from fragmentation.
I know, I know... I guess I'm just bitching that I can't actually buy the game physically for preservation purposes, if the game isn't on the disc I bought or the full game on the cartridge ROM.

Can confirm start software does what it says it does.

There seem to be a lot of misinformed people in this thread. BotW did not require a day one patch and shipped fully playable without any downloads or installation. My question was in relation to a software update prompt that had been automatically downloaded while my console had an internet connection.

Update: Although this is not 100% confirmed, but the cartridges are all from the same print and have exactly the same serial.
However: when the game has been updated before, I believe something changes on the cartridge as well!
So there is something on the cartridge that tells the Switch what the minimum required firmware is. (and this can be updated).

So long story short: all cartridges should be the same, but the part on the cartridge responsible for firmware checkup is able to update itself.

I just grabbed a used copy of BotW recently. my switch is not currently on wifi and on 3.0.0 (splatoon bundle). Didn't ask to update and worked fine.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but I just had the same thing happen to me (BotW cartridge) and I'm curious: Would agreeing to download update the game only, or would it also update the switch firmware? I'm on 4.1.0, using airplane mode for a while now.
