Hi there, fellow Tempers

I have had a Switch since launch day. I've always been one to get into the hacking scene of any console. But for me, this is just too early in the consoles life cycle for me to want to do that on my main machine. I have some points earned up on Amazon that allows me to get a Switch an almost no cost. I was wondering though, anyone have any vague idea as to what their stocks firmware might be on? Im imagining a fairly high one. I'm not necessarily looking to hack it now. Just to have on hand so that once a hack does come along for it's firmware, I'll have it. My question really is, do you think that's a a good idea? Will the most recent firmware be hacked eventually or is there something preventing that from happening? I haven't been on the forums too much recently so I'm not familiar. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Any Switch firmware can be softmodded to boot into CFW. You will have to use a jig, paperclip or something similar to short out two pins on the right joycon rail when you want to boot into CFW. I've heard of maybe in the future older firmwares being able to get into CFW without the jig. Look into that if interested. I am on the latest firmware so I don't know much about it.

*hardmod
also you can just use a jig once then enable autorcm and never need a jig again

My guess is the stuff from Amazon is still 3.0 to 4.1.

If you have spent money on games for your switch and don't want to risk that switch getting banned online and from eshop, then yes, by all means, get the switch since it's basically free and if you decide you don't want it later you can always sell it.

But beware of the potential IP banning, if you don't go online with the second they will not ban you ...

Any after getting banned you can still buy a new Switch and it will be brand new unbanned, I would say just try not getting banned with your Switch and see

It seems that 5.0 Switches have not entered the wild, at least according to the Switch firmware by serial number thread. That means you'll have at worst a 4.1 console which can potentially see a warmboot softmod in the future. However, since all firmwares are hackable via the hardmod, you can safely update as long as you don't mind having to use a jig and USB cable for the rest of the Switch's lifespan.

You can use homebrew as well as backup loading (SX OS or LayeredFS) on the latest firmware right now. Buying a second switch for hacking purposes is the safest way to go. If you decide to buy a new switch for hacking, I'd recommend that you use it only offline as soon as you have homebrew or any other modification installed. We don't know for sure yet what's safe and what might be detected by Nintendo. Don't risk a ban.
