if I can't fall asleep, I concentrate on the clock's ticking.
Reminds me of an odd technique my dad told me for falling asleep; imagine you're in an elevator going up, and, with each floor, you grow slightly more tired, eventually fading into sleep.

While it's not 100% effective, it's useful for calming yourself down in a gentle manner.

I'm leaving this as more of an open ended thread that people drop in their own ways of handling it but I am kinda curious as to how others handle this.

How do you clear your mind as you wind down to rest for the next day?

More an more of lately at the time of posting I've been having issues with my mind simply being in a never ending rush of thought. This of course makes it an absolute nightmare to try and fall asleep at night and so it has lead me here to inquire on how the rest of those on the forum handle this.

I have that sine 15 years ... takes me ~1-3 hours usually to fall asleep sometimes I don't sleep at all plus I wake up very often at night so that I hardly get more than ~3-5 hours sleep except for weekends where I can stay in bed as long as necessary

Basically a combination of sleeping pills and reading until I pass out, which usually takes like 3-4 hours. Been that way for about 9 years, not much else does it for me. Can't stand noise when I'm truly trying to rest and fall asleep, so watching TV/listening to music just doesn't work for me.

I go to bed at the same time every day, I have an alarm when it's time to prepare for bed. I listen to audiobooks (with sleep timer) most nights, things I've already heard but still like to listen to. I'm asleep within 5-10 minutes usually. I'm very sensitive when it comes to lack of sleep, and I'm glad about that as I think there are amazing benefits to taking care of your sleep.

I think an audiobook is enough distraction for anyone with a problem of racing thoughts... but if it isn't I'd suggest going for a long walk without any distractions (no music or audiobooks) sometime during the day, just you and your thoughts, otherwise nighttime is the only time during the whole day you are really alone with your brain. Or take up meditation, or do both.

My mind is constantly going. Its one of the curses of being highly intelligent. What i have found that works for me it to put in one of my ear buds and put something on youtube. I try to play some kind of a space documentary or something with a monotone narrator. I dont actually watch the video for more than a couple of minutes, but i keep the earbud in my ear all night. Just to hear another voice, it distracts my mind enough from wanting to think. This also helps gives me some really cool dreams that are all about space colonization and such.

Only downside is i move around a lot in my sleep so i have to keep switching which ear i have the earbud in.

I don't do anything special really, but the other day I happened to hold my phone and say "Hey, google! I am tired!", and it offered to play some "relaxing sounds from nature". It started playing a one hour track of, basically, water flowing through a river. In a couple of minutes I was out. That thing is the strongest sleeping pill I've ever had.

Read a chapter before bed – when I do this, no matter how sleepless I feel, I almost always conk out before even finishing it. Probably because I'm so mentally tired at that point my brain would rather succumb to my desire for sleep rather than focus on text

Alternatively, as has been mentioned, a couple hits from a j will have you sleep like a rock. I use this method a lot as a chronic insomniac.
