Hi,

I've done a lot of trial and error but I just can't make my r4i gold run on my 11.4..U 3ds.
I put the 1.64 in the root from r4ids dot cn on the micro sd. Then click the icon that looks like a glitchy chinese/jap game but then the following black screen appears:

"An error has occured. Press and hold the POWER button to turn the system off"

I have the following tools to help me solve this problem, I just need some guidance:

  • 1 regular 3ds version 11.4...U (not new, lite or dsi)
1 3ds XL version 9.2 or less (the r4i gold WORKS and loads games in this 3ds xL)
1 original legend of zelda ocarina of time cart
    2 r4i gold
    2 micro sd y and micro-to-sd-reader
    2 SD cards

Please help!

My objective is being able to make the r4i gold work on the 11.4 3ds and eventually run cfw.

You could try ntrboothax with the cart. OOThax is only a userland entry and wont do shit to get CFW.

i guess the 3ds xl with 9.2 has CFW right?

Not yet. Is it doable for the 9.2 ds? Will that help me achieve what I want for the other DS?

I should do try that in the 9.2 3ds then use the cart on the 11.4 3ds?

You can use the 9.2 system to get the needed information for ntrboot yes.

if your XL can read the r4 and isn´t modded it means your 11.4 may have a problem since they haven´t blocked flashcards since 6.X
try other DS game just in case

Goto 3ds hacks guide, google it and follow the guide. Regardless of what device or firmware it is on and you will be able to mod both consoles with CFW. 11.4 requires an "all version method" which is done with ntrboot and 9.2 can be done really easily via the "homebrew soundhax method".

End result the gamecart will then work on both devices regardless if it has a time bomb

the guide there says:

"Ensure your flashcart is able to launch .nds files on your device before beginning. Some flashcarts may require firmware or “kernel” files to be copied to the flashcart SD card. Consult your specific flashcart’s instructions for more information."

But if I get the message on OP, can I continue with their guide? [I thought not.... that is why I originally tried to make the r4igold 3ds work. But right now it only works on the 9.2 3ds. ( I bought that r4i like 5 years ago, so maybe I need to update something? ). But if I can continue with this method on the 11.4 3ds regardless of this, let me know how, please.

(would installing cfw on the 9.2 3ds help at all the cfw-process for the 11.4? )

If it were me, I would mod the console on 9.2 to lumacfw via the homebrew soundhax method and have it safely running on 11.6, then your cart will still load regardless, then try mucking around with the ds_ntrboot_flasher.nds section.

On this page "Installing boot9strap (ntrboot)" in section V is your particular card listed? https://3ds.hacks.guide/installing-boot9strap-(ntrboot) If so proceed because you can at least use the modded console to restore the original function of the cart, worse case scenario you loose the ability to use the old cart.

You can mod one console atleast, not sure what cart version it actually is a little more info would be helpful.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Section V - Removing ntrboot
What You Need
  • The latest release of ntrboot_flasher
  • The flashrom backup corresponding to your flashcart
    • Note that if you followed “Flashing ntrboot (3DS Multi System)”, the flashrom already exists in the correct location and does not need to be downloaded
    • If you do not know which HW revision you have, just try each for your cart of them. Only the correct one will allow your flashcart to launch properly from home menu, but flashing the wrong one will not brick the cart

As the person above said, but simpler:
  1. Get CFW on the 9.2 device first, you can use SoundHax
  2. Use this console to flash ntrboot to the flashcart
  3. Use the flashcart to install CFW on the higher firmware console

Thanks for your replies.

I managed to soundhax the 9.2 3ds. I'm kinda stuck at the next step the website guide sugested:

Now the website sugested to install ntrboot selector from here
gbatemp<dot>net/threads/release-bootntr-selector<dot>432911/

But there are cias regular and mode3. Since my 3ds is type old, should I install them both?

BootNTR is optional, it's used for cheats (which you can also do with a Luma3DS mod) and plugins.
Mode3 is needed for certain games like Pokemon on o3DS so yeah, better install both if you want that.

seems like I confused the terms.... ntrBoot/BootNtr DX

...now I'm stuck at step 4 below. I'll keep trying because it does not seem to work for me

Installing boot9strap (ntrboot)

Section II - ntrboot
  1. Use the magnet to find the spot on your device where the sleep sensor is triggered
    • This step is not needed on the old 2DS (which has a sleep mode switch)
  2. Power off your device
  3. Insert your flashcart into your device
  4. Place the magnet on your device to trigger the sleep sensor
    • On old 2DS, you should instead enable the sleep mode switch
  5. Hold (Start) + (Select) + (X) + (Power) for several seconds, then release the buttons
    • It may take a few attempts to get this to work because the positioning is awkward
  6. If the exploit was successful, you will have booted into SafeB9SInstaller

Did you find the right location? You have to check beforehand to find the spot where it enters sleep mode, it should be around the ABXY buttons somewhere. If it doesn't enter sleep mode at all no matter where you place the magnet, your magnet is too weak.

my magnet place seemed to be in the right corner. Also, I had mistaken the cart flashing tutorial using another 3ds with one saying nds(which loaded but did NOT flash the r4 properly). After that the hiccup was the button pressing, which was solved by pressing the magnet, then the buttons except power. then hold power 1-3 seconds, then let go power without releasing the other buttons. then releasing the magnet. Then letting go of the buttons; then the menu loaded and I was able to keep going with the 3ds.hacks.guide

In the end I just got to load my r4 on both 3ds, so I achieved my main objective. Thanks to all who commented and helped! :D
