After nearly 5 years in the making, the PlayStation exclusive RPG Rainbow Skies finally has a release date! Both physical and digital versions of the game will be releasing for the PS4, and interestingly the PS3 and PS Vita as well!

As for the plot, it's as follows:
It's a big day for Damion: Today is his final examination as a monster tamer, an important profession in his home town, which is constantly threatened by monster attacks. However, after a terrible hangover, Damion completely messes things up and not only fails the examination but also destroys the entire monster compound.

When he tries to cover up his mishap with his examiner Layne, things turn from bad to worse and through a number of unforeseen circumstances, they find themselves between the fronts of two rival super powers...

And some features of the game:
• Follow the story of three young heroes and discover the true value of their friendship.
• Explore a colorful and vibrant world, filled with friends and foes.
• Fight turn-based battles and execute devastating skills and combo attacks.
• Breed and level up a large variety of monsters and add them to your party.
• Upgrade your characters, weapons, equipment, and battle skills.
• An almost endless amount of side quests and optional content.
• Dig up hidden treasures and find other valuable collectibles.
• Play a variety of mini games, including a turn-based fishing game.
• Cross-Save support on PS4, PS3 and PS Vita.

Rainbow Skies lands on the PS4, PS3 and PS Vita on June 26 (North America) and June 27 (Europe/Asia). The game will support 3-way Cross-Buy and will be priced at US$29.99, €26.99.

They probably started to work on it first, when just the PS3 and Vita was around, then decided to port to the PS4 as well.

As for looks, they art style seems aright to me, but I can see how the overworld movement can be off putting. That aside, the gameplay looks nice.
Kind of reminds me of Disgaea.

This had to have been a mobile game at some point and just decided to make a console game.

Is turn based tactical rpg games popular in North America? I mean I know it exist, but how popular is it? I mean one of the first ones we probably played was Shining force by Sega, Fire emblem was made before that game but only existed in japan until GBA Came out, by that time we had both shining force and Final Fantasy Tactics and possibly some others I don't know well. But lately it seem to be getting more attention.

What a generic name lol

Leaves my expectations regarding the game script pretty low

But maybe it's fun

Will it get a physical disc release?

The art is not for me but still of a style that some like* so I will skip that one, however it was the overworld animations that sank it for me and seemingly not for lack of trying (several of those had optional quirks, twitches and intermediate sections/states).

*some pondered whether we were going to see a return of 90s 3d animation (examples 1 and example 2 as the small game dev style of moment, not unlike the "child in a dark and scary world reimagines Mario" thing that was all pervasive in that world some time before.

From what I could see of the gameplay that looked like a nice hybrid of tactics and more conventional turn based stuff, and the option to go up against many many enemies also worked for me. That very much comes down to execution though as I have been fooled before by trailers (see also a lot of the PSP library).
