Got my hands on a ps2 from japan with model SCPH 15000. Im entirely new to the ps2 console, just wanted to know the easiest way to mod this thing so I could load backups from an external drive. Tried googling but it still not very clear to me, kinda noobish on this ps2 modding thing. TIA

FreeMCBoot is the way to go if you plan to play the games from HDD.
Are you talking about USB HDD? Or the external PS2 HDD which you hook up via the PCMCIA slot?

USB HDD is my only option as of now. Thanks for the reply.

Don't expect much from this approach, as the PS2 only has USB 1.1 which doesn't offer enough bandwidth to play all games smoothly. There will be stutters in FMVs, longer load times, stutters in games that streamline data (huge maps etc.). Your best bet is to either get the official PS2 HDD for your system (with the PCMCIA card) or use burned discs with FMCB + ESR. But make sure you ONLY use the best DVD-Rs you can find and burn them properly with a good burner + PI / PIF checks afterwards. That drive in your model was made when Jesus was still around so it's almost 19 years old.

So hard to find the BB unit compatible with my ps2 here in my country, so will definitely take your advise of just using burned disc to play...

The DVD-R option was meant as a VERY last resort and I'd advise against it on such an old unit. Rather get a crackass junky PS2 for 10$ and abuse it with DVD-Rs etc.
The DVD drives on these old units are fragile af, it would be a shame to destroy it because of this.
If you realy want to play games on such an old unit, the only way to go is via the HDD unit. If you want to use USB drives or DVD-Rs, you can do it on any other PS2.

It's hard to explain what I mean, but it would be like driving a Lamborghini on an offroad track, it's a waste.

I get what you meant, though if I could get a hold of the PCMCIA network card for this, can I play games from a network server?

Get an HDD adapter or network adapter for that phat PS2. It has better compatibility, faster loading times, etc. compared to the crappy USB 1.1 method. If you can't find an HDD/Network adapter, I'd suggest to just burn a DVD-R and play it that way. It's still better than using USB.
If you don't have a modchip, install ESR to execute PS2 DVD.
YOU NEED TO PATCH THAT ISO BEFORE BURN A DVD, with ESR PATCHER.

HDD/Network Adapter > DVD backup > USB

Yes but that would still nit be perfect in terms of speed. It's better than USB in terms of speed, but still slower than DVD.

You could say USB < SMB (Network) < DVD < HDD

Over SMB you get a lot less stutter, but it can happen every now and then.

Keep in mind that his unit is a v0 with a PCMCIA slot, HDD Unit + PCMCIA cards are a lot more expensive.

@iCEQB
I see what you meant. I didn't think they have these versions. I didn't even know PCMCIA cards existed for the PS2.
I tried looking around and it's freakin' rare. Damn, this console got some cool accessories I didn't know existed.
Oh well, I hope he's fine with either DVD or SMB.
But first, OP needs to set up that FreeMCboot. Using external drives definitely sucks on the PS2.
I wish there were some sort of modchip you could install that will at least give you USB 2.0 or HDD connection.

Well, they are Japanese exclusives (like the whole 1xxxx series - outside of the equivalent DEX models) :)

They probably changed to internal HDD since: the only retail card made was the ethernet+hdd one, early PS2s had a two-part motherboard that likely occupied the HDD rail space, less fragility than an extra disk box with a short 30+ pin cable, and of course $ony's general attitude towards cost cutting and respect of consumers' investment into a platform

I wish there were some sort of [...] you could install that will at least give you USB 2.0
Now there is - the PS2USB - but it's only made in Expansion Bay format!
(It's probably the first original 3rd party product for that socket; but as an original device needing its own drivers, compatibility with homebrew is much lower than other options - it was originally only designed for a license-violating fork of OPL, though it now supports Popstarter and SMS at least - and long term support is very questionable according to the inventor's own words)

(Same guy invented the PS2NetBox, a PS2-specific SATA/IDE to Ethernet external drive, which despite the same criticisms at least fills a rather large niche of many PS2 Slim users; but PS2USB is much less useful when an original Sony network adapter + express shipping from the USA is cheaper, widely supported in homebrew, and doesn't have an external drive sticking out)

I wish there were some sort of modchip you could install that will at least give you HDD connection.
HD Pro, but due to how it's implemented it's not much faster than USB 1, and support is even less than the above products (it adds an 8-bit, non-DMA interface on the data lines used for the firmware rom!)
I'm not even sure if the Modbo (which is a Matrix clone) supports the 1xxxx series...

Not bad, memory card is 3rd party but it has games included...
Buy a network adapter (Sony original... don't just trust the logo as there are fakes) then enjoy top quality hdd backup loading!

Yes, just make sure to use latest FMCB (or FHDB) and OPL and you are good to go! :)

You may need to install the system update first (using the disc included with the console) - I don't remember if the 15xxx has it, it's a thing with the 10xxx - otherwise it's the same as on newer consoles :)
